NewYorkerType was one of the first typefaces I tried my hand at in 1985. I meant it as a revival of the typeface used by the New Yorker magazine. I did not scan it in, I just looked at the type and redrew it completely by hand. So it is not just a copy, but rather a redesign. Only much later did I come to know, that there is a bundle of similar typefaces of that period. Rea Irvin's design for New-Yorker magazine was just one of them, but the best. Hand drawn serif typeface designed for one of our books. It has upper and lowercase characters with up to three alternate glyphs. Build in OpenType Contextual Alternates feature will automatically set alternate glyphs depending on frequency of appearance of the same character (even in web font but only in HTML5 browsers). The script doesn’t throw random glyphs. For example in the word “HIPPOPOTAMUS” you will automatically get three different “P” glyphs and two “O” glyphs. Svengali Roman is loosely inspired by a scrap of 1920s newspaper posted in the Typophile font identification forum. The consensus view there favored the view that the specimen showed hand-drawn lettering. The name Type Warmers JNL traces its lineage to small catalog booklets issued by Indianapolis' Cobb Shinn for his line of letterpress cuts; of which a few can be found included within this typeface. Presumably type could "warm up to" these stock illustrations and work hand-in-hand to deliver the message, hence the "Type Warmers" sobriquet. Originally known for illustrating many attractive and comical postcards of the early 1900s, Shinn moved into the field of purchasing stock art and redistributing them as electrotypes or "cuts", the predecessor to today's digital clip art.
