While helping produce a trade magazine years ago, I admired the hand-lettering of the art director -- a woman named Marydale -- and suggested she let me model a font after her penmanship. She agreed and drew out the alphabet, and I launched an old copy of Fontographer and (to shorten a long story) ended up developing my very first digital typeface. Which has since, astonishingly, become famous worldwide. So now the real Marydale gets the mixed blessing of seeing her handwriting (and name) plastered all over the planet. Full release has regular, bold, and black weights.

A 1964 piece of sheet music entitled “Old Soldiers Never Die (They Just Fade Away)” was based on the farewell speech General Douglas MacArthur gave to Congress on April 19, 1951. This particular edition of the song sheet had part of his speech (as well as its title) hand lettered in a free-form sans serif reminiscent of the lettering done by such noted lettering artists as Paul Coker and Saul Bass. The casual and playful style of this type design became the inspiration for Swing Vote JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

The hand lettered title found on the cover of the 1932 sheet music for “Dancing Marathon” inspired the digital revival of this unusual lettering as well as the font’s name. This eccentric Art Deco design (with a slight bit of Art Nouveau mixed in) is a thin, monoline typeface. Dancing Marathon JNL is available in both regular and oblique versions. Dance marathons got their start during the Great Depression as people desperate to earn a few dollars would enter into contests that went on for hours until the last couple remained standing on the dance floor.

Kanna Aoki was designing fabrics and dishware for several major manufacturers when she designed MVB Cafe Mimi. The design came from a few words Aoki painted as decoration for a set of cappuccino cups. Aoki created the Regular weight for MVB Fonts using a brush. The Bold was adapted after digitization. Using several double-letter ligatures, the fonts can feel as natural and spontaneous as the original hand-painted lettering. Despite its curlicues and free-flowing forms, great care was taken to keep this script balanced and legible. It skips and hops along the baseline but doesn't lose its step.

Initially inspired by an untitled typeface from an old hand-lettering book, Berber has been extensively developed over two incarnations to function as a very strong and confident sans. The lettering for Stencil Box JNL was found on the packaging of a children's toy stencil set circa the 1940s. Popular for years, Pencil Stencils were a series of "connect the line" stencils where a series of dashed lines were traced from the cutouts and the lines connected to complete pictures of animals or other subjects. Although the packaging itself was often updated to reflect the current times during the life of the product, it was this hand-lettered example of stencil-meets-Art Deco from the 40s that proved worthy of saving as a digital typeface.

Here’s an edge-tattered, slightly distorted typeface that was developed from hand stamping using ink. You’ll find it ideal for both display and text situations where legibility is a big concern. Originally I wanted to call this font Chewy Caramel, because I love caramel. But that name was already taken, so I deleted two letters in the name and ended up with Chewy Camel instead. I know that the designer of Chewy Caramel don’t mind - because that is my good friend, David, who made that one! :) Chewy Camel was made with a slightly blurry and inky pen, and is suitable for most things that need a true organic hand lettered font. I have added 6 slightly different versions of each letter, and there is multilingual support as well

Ritz Slab Serif JNL is a bold display face which shares a lot of similar design traits to Stymie and other similar metal type of the 1930s and 1940s, but in actuality was modeled from only four letters. On the sheet music for the 1937 song "Sweet Varsity Sue" [from the 20th Century Fox Film "Life Begins in College"], there is a picture of the Ritz Brothers - a popular comedy team from 1925 through the late 1960s. The hand lettered name "Ritz" became the basis for Ritz Slab Serif JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

This is long awaited thorough revision to Skarpa family. The revision has inculded both another look at letter shapes as well as kerning and metrics of the files. The shapes encapsulated in this font stem from old time architectural drawings hand executed at drawing board with tracing paper and rapidographs. Think of lettering stencils sliding across the tracing paper and craftily exectuted drawing descriptions. The font is based on geometric forms devoid of excessive flourishing. Would suit modern designs either in fashion, technology or laboratory setting. Would look good on door plaques in pharmacy or simple drawer plaques - especially Medium or Bold specimen.

Sheet music for another one of those songs from the early part of the 20th Century with a wonderfully wordy hand lettered title was the model for the Art Nouveau flavored Go Home JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions. 1908's "I Used to be Afraid to Go Home in the Dark (Now I'm Afraid to Go at All)" is comprised of eighteen words. RF Marshall was inspired by an 1883 tombstone, tucked away in a pioneer cemetery. The 4-sided marker is sparsely adorned with homespun carvings of a handprint, two tulip poplar leaves, and these words: "RF Marshall died 1883 Aged 72 years." The font faithfully reproduces the stone's hand-carved lettering and artwork, as well as artwork from other 18th and 19th century American headstones. It was drawn with calligraphy nibs dipped in walnut ink and delights in a range of end uses including period films, rustic decor, Halloween decorations, historical logos and branding, and on the pages of children's books.

English Script Regular is a typeface made in the manner of English Copperplate, a kind of writing that was very popular in England during the 18th Century. Also referred to as English Round Hand, the style was promulgated by various writing masters, who published copybooks of their handwriting for students to use as guides. The style has remained popular to this day, and almost no sort of font is more readily identifiable with the ideas of formal," "old fashioned," "traditional," or "high society." Karamelia is my grungy hand drawn brush script. Uppercase is pretty steady, while the lowercase dances and bounces in an unpredictable way. The font has got at lot of of OpenType features such as swashes, ligatures and stylistic alternates - which easily makes your text look more like authentic handwriting. I can think of loads of great opportunities in which this font would look absolutely great ... invitations, weddings, café menus, birthdays, various greeting cards ... or maybe even a loveletter?! Don’t let the name “Trippy Hippie JNL” fool you. Although the type design fits well with the 1960s-70s hippie movement and the “love generation”, the design is actually straight out of a page from a vintage German lettering textbook entitled “50 Alphabete fur Technikur und Fachschulen” (loosely translated to “50 Alphabets for Technicians and Specialized Schools”). The novelty, free form shapes and stroke weights of this hand lettered alphabet fits well in creating 1920s period pieces or for designing a retro-inspired rock and roll concert poster. I needed a name with ‘brush’ in it and most have already been taken, so I did a little digging and found out that Purshia tridentata, a flowering plant native to the mountainous areas of western North America is called bitterbrush. It is also known as antelope brush, quinine brush and buckbrush - but I settled on Bitterbrush. There’s nothing bitter about Bitterbrush. It is actually a very sweet hand brushed font. It comes with ligatures for double letter combinations and a truck load of diacritics. And (something I am very proud of): it supports the Vietnamese language!
