CastleType was commissioned in 1991 by San Francisco Focus magazine to digitize three members of the Standard family. This is a Continental lineale that was popular in Switzerland in the 1950s and later in the United States. A cousin to the classic sans serifs, Standard is an alternative that is considerably warmer and a bit more idiosyncratic. In 2008, CastleType released additional members of the Standard CT family to make it a complete typographic solution with three widths (normal, condensed, extended) of four weights each (Regular, Medium, Bold, and Extra Bold). Some of the original Standard fonts, particularly Standard Regular, appear to have been hastily designed (or perhaps too closely imitated Helvetica); these have been greatly improved in the CastleType versions with more harmonious proportions and other refinements. The three lighter weights of the Extended subfamily were designed from scratch based on the new Standard CT Regular and Standard CT Extended Extra Bold. More recently, four light weights (Light, Extra Light, Ultra Light, and Hairline) have been added to each of the three widths. The entire Standard CT family includes support for most European languages, OpenType features, arbitrary fractions, and a collection of geometrics, dingbats & fleurons.

Boring Sans, designed by Cosimo Lorenzo Pancini, is a typeface family designed along two variable axis: weight and weirdness. These two parameters allow designers to explore a full range of variations on sans serif design, starting from a neutral set of proportions and evolving to a strongly contrasted and dynamic treatment, ready to raise eyebrows on social media. The basic "A" subfamily, developed in in five weights plus italics, behaves like a traditional, solid workhorse sans serif, with finely tuned proportions for optimal readability and minimal emotional impact. The "B" subfamily, developed in the same ten weights, shows a more contemporary "brutal" approach, with slanted lines, deep inktraps and stronger contrast. All these features are brought to the extreme in the ten weights of the "C" subfamily, with each letter a bombastic show of exhuberant weirdness. Each of the style variant is developed in five weight with matching italics, with a glyph set covering extended latin languages and including many alternate forms and stylistc sets. For control freaks the family package includes two variable font versions that allow fine tuning and control of the design options.

Kornelis de Vries, a headmaster from the Dutch province of Friesland, cultivated new potato breeds that he named after pupils in his school. In the early 1900s he came up with the tasty Bintje (a Frisian girl’s name) and it became a big success – in Belgium and France it has remained the most popular potato for french fries to this day, more than a century since its introduction. Donald Roos took 10 kilos of fresh Bintje potatoes and cut the Bint typeface by hand with a short, sharp knife. He then inked each character once and printed it twice; the second, lighter printing is accommodated in the lower case alphabet. The Bint family offers a script to make the letters bounce up and down the baseline; with OpenType functionality the font randomly chooses each character from the upper- or lowercase alphabet. ‘Tabular lining figures’ will activate a series of negative numerals in boxes; ‘Discretionary ligatures’ activates specially designed letter combinations like ‘www’ as well as arrows and stars. Bint has a distinct, slightly rough handmade appearance, making it useful for a wide range of designs.

PTx Flowers Font Family 2 fonts: regular and silhouette each font - 6 glyphs TTF format Bear in mind that each glyph of the font PTx Flowers Regular is close to the maximum limit of points possible in ttf, which means that despite being tested in several programs, illustrator, photoshop, among others including word, some bugs may occur, depending on the rendering capability of the program you are working on. I found however that most of the time, that by the way the bugs, when tested, were only verified in word, that changing the size of the letter/glyph or even the zoom of the document, the letter/glyph was rendered correctly. These fonts have a very limited number of glyphs because, due to the glyphs having too many points, it can take some time to render. Nagham was designed using uniform glyph thickness throughout and exaggerated letter heights to offer a vertical look and feel. It supports all Arabetic scripts covered by Unicode 6.1, and the latest Arabic Supplement and Extended-A Unicode blocks, including support for Quranic texts. This font family includes two letter spacing flavors: isolated for small text and overlapped for large or display text. The two flavors come with two weights, regular and bold, each of which has normal and left-slanted Italic versions. The script design of this font family follows the Arabetics Mutamathil Taqlidi style utilizing varying x-heights. The Mutamathil Taqlidi type style uses one glyph per every basic Arabic Unicode character or letter, as defined by the Unicode Standards, and one additional final form glyph, for each freely-connecting letter of the Arabic cursive text. Nagham includes the required Lam-Alif ligatures in addition to all vowel diacritic ligatures. Soft-vowel diacritic marks (harakat) are selectively positioned with most of them appearing on similar high and low levels—top left corner—, to clearly distinguish them from the letters. Layal is an Arabetic type design with a calligraphic flavor. It follows the guidelines of the Mutamathil Taqlidi type style with one glyph for every basic Arabic Unicode character or letter, as defined in Unicode Standards version 5.1, and one additional, final-position, glyph for each Arabic letter that is normally connected with other letters from both sides in traditional cursive Arabic strings. Layal employs variable x-height values. It includes all required Lam-Alif ligatures and uses ligature substitutions and selected marks positioning but it does not use any other glyph substitutions or forming. Text strings composed using types of this family are non-cursive with stand-alone isolated glyphs. Tatweel (or Kashida) glyph is a zero width space. Keying it before any glyph will display that glyph isolated form. Keying Tatweel before Alif Lam Lam Ha will display the Allah ligature. Layal family includes both Arabic and Arabic-Indic numerals; all required diacritic marks, Allah ligature, in addition to standard English keyboard punctuations and major currency symbols. Layal is available in normal, bold, black, light, and extra light, each both in regular and italic styles.

Broadgauge Ornate originated from MacKellar, Smiths & Jordan in 1869 and was only available as an all caps font with numbers. Today this old beautiful wood type rises again from the archives complete with original numbers and an all new lowercase. An all caps Greek character set has also been added plus accented characters for western, central and Eastern European countries. Included in each font file are two sets of left and right pointing hands located on the Less Than and Greater Than keys and also on the Bracket keys. Because this font works well with a Las Vegas theme I've decided to make the pointing hands gambling related with one set of hands rolling dice and the other holding cards. The condensed versions were created because in today's computer graphics applications people stretch and condense fonts to fit their project but don't notice the change in vertical stroke widths or line thickness. After compressing the letter shapes of each Broadgauge Ornate condensed font the vertical lines were corrected making sure they were the proper width or thickness. The results are balanced condensed versions that weren't simply compressed with out consideration for their appearance.

Roller Poster is named after Alfred Roller. In 1902, Roller created a poster to advertise the 16th exhibit of Austrian Artists and Sculptures Association, representing the Vienna Secession movement. The exhibit was to take place in Vienna during January & February 1903. The location is not mentioned because everyone in Vienna knew it would be held at the exhibit hall in the Secession Building at Friedrichstraþe 12, a few blocks south of the Opernring, near the Naschmarkt. Designed by Joseph Maria Olbrich in 1897, the buiilding has been restored and stands today as one finest of the many fine examples of Art Nouveau architecture in Vienna (see vienna_secession_bldg.jpg). Because of its dome, it is called “the golden cabbage.” The poster itself is unique. The word “secession” is in one type style and takes up two-thirds of the elongated poster. At the bottom of the poster are the details in a different lettering style. It is this second style at the bottom that is the basis for the font Roller Poster. In keeping with our regular naming conventions, we were going to call it Roller Gezeichnete (hand-drawn), but the wonderful play on both words and the shape of the three S’s in secession was too compelling. In November 1965 there was an exhibit of Jugendstil and Expressionist art at the University of California. Alfred Roller’s Secession Poster was part of that exhibit. Wes Wilson was designing promotional material at Contact Printing in San Francisco. Among their clients was a rock promoter named Bill Graham, staging dance-concerts at Fillmore Auditorium. Wilson saw the catalog from the UC exhibit and Roller’s lettering. Wilson adapted Roller’s letter forms to his own fluid style. The result was the poster for the August 12-13, 1966 Jefferson Airplane/Grateful Dead concert at Fillmore put on by Graham (BG23-1). Wilson continued to use Roller’s letter forms on most of the posters he did for Graham through May 1967, when he stopped working for Graham. The posters were extremely successful and the lettering style along with Roller’s letter forms were picked up by other artists, including Bonnie MacLean, Clifford Charles Seeley, James Gardner, and others. The Secession poster and the Fillmore posters have inspired a number of fonts in addition to ours. Among them are JONAH BLACK (& WHITE) by Rececca Alaccari, LOVE SOLID by Leslie Carbarga and MOJO by Jim Parkinson. Each is different and yet each clearly shows its bloodlines. Our font differs in two ways: 1) the general differences in the interpretation of the letter forms and 2) the modification of the basic letter form to incorporate the diacriticals within the implied frame of the letter, after the manner of the original design by Roller. We borrowed Carbarga’s solution to the slashed O and used it, in a modified form, for other characters as well to accomplish the same purpose. We recommend that you buy ours and at least one of the other three. According to Alaccari, a version called URBAN was released by Franklin Lettering in the 70’s (and is shown on page 51 of The Solotype Catalog). For comparison of our font to original design, see image files roller_poster_2s.jpg of original poster and roller_poster_2sx.jpg showing reconstruction using our font for the lower portion (recontructed area indicated by blue bar). Please note the consistency of character width. In the lower case, 23 of the basic 26 letters are 1/2 EM Square wide. The ‘i’ is an eighth narrower, while the ‘m’& ‘w’ are one quarter wider. All the Upper Case letters are 1/8 EM wider than the lower case. This is to make it easier to fill a geometrical shape like a rectangle, allowing you to capture a little of the flavor of Wes Wilson’s Fillmore West poster using only a word processor. We have also included a number of shapes for use as spacers and endcaps. If you have a drawing program that allows you to edit an ‘envelope’ around the letters to distort their shape, you can really get creative. I used Corel Draw for the gallary images, but there are other programs that can accomplish the same thing. The image file “roller_poster_keys.jpg” shows the complete character set with the keystrokes required for each character (see “HiH_Font_readme.txt” for instruction on inserting the non-keyboard characters). The file “roller_poster_widths.jpg” shows the exact width of each character in EM units (based on 1000 units per EM square). You will notice that the font is set wide for readability. However, most programs will allow you to tighten up on the character spacing after the manner of Roller & Wilson. In MS Word, for example, go to the FORMAT menu > FONT > CHARACTER SPACING. Go to the second Drop-Down Menu, labeled ‘Spacing’ and select "condensed' and then set the amount that you want to condense ‘by’ (key on the little arrows); two points (2.0) is a godd place to start. Let your motto be EXPLORE & EXPERIMENT. Art Nouveau has always been one of my favorite movements in art -- I grew up in a home with a couple of Mucha prints hanging on the living room wall. Perhaps because of that and because I lived through the sixties, I have enjoyed researching and designing this font more than any other I have worked on. Let’s face it (pardon the pun), Roller Poster is a FUN font. You owe it to yourself to have fun using it.

From the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains, by way of Toronto, comes Martie's handwriting. Martie Byrd is a school teacher in Roanoke, Virginia, and a friend of Canada Type's Rebecca Alaccari. After years of admiring the cheer and clarity of Martie's handwriting, we asked her to write out full alphabets for some cool font treatment. The intent was to do three different versions of her writing in two different pens, then use the auto-magic of OpenType to determine letter sequences and rotate character sets on the fly when the fonts are in use. A successful endeavor it was. Take a look at the images in the MyFonts gallery to see the character rotation in action, along with a visual explanation of why Martie is not just another handwriting font. Unlike other available felt tip and ballpoint handwriting fonts, the regular and bold variations are style-based, not weight-based. They are the handwritten expressions of two different Sharpie pens: The fine point one (Martie Bold), and the ultrafine one (Martie Regular). The style-based variation considerably helps the realism needed in design pieces that take advantage of the contrast of two different handwriting fonts. Weight thickening in handwriting is an obvious mechanical effect that only happens with computers. Weight changing by replacing pens is what happens in the real world. Martie Pro and Martie Pro Bold each contain three different character sets in a single font. Language support includes Western, Central and Eastern European languages for all three sets. This translates into each Pro font containing over 750 characters. Add OpenType code and stir, and you have true handwriting fonts with versatility unavailable out there in anything else of the genre. A software program that supports OpenType features is needed to use the randomization coded in Martie Pro and Martie Pro Bold. Current versions of QuarkXpress and Adobe applications (Photoshop, Illlustrator, InDesign) do contain support for the randomization feature. But if you don't have one of these apps, you can still use the interchangeable Type 1 or True Type fonts and change the characters manually to achieve the appearance of true handwriting. The Martie fonts come in a variety of price packages, from the affordable single fonts to value-laden complete sets. All the proceeds from these fonts received by Canada Type will be donated 50/50 to two primary schools: One in Roanoke (where Martie teaches), and one in Toronto (where the 10-year old, real Canada Type boss goes). ITC Motter Corpus was designed by the Austrian type designer Othmar Motter in 1993 to combine the display advantages of a sans serif extra bold design with the legibility of a roman weight.
