P22 Barabajagal is a unique take on the display fat face by way of doodling fun. The font was inspired by the persistent demands of editors for scripts which actually looked like real handwriting, a lot of historical fiction projects and a love of maps. While making a map for a prequel to Treasure Island I decided to make a font from the lettering of some Caribbean maps of the period. The glyphs are all hand drawn vector outlines which although very legible and consistent in style carry the variation and irregularity you expect from handwriting. This font has been featured on maps for books by authors such as Peter V. Brett, Mark Lawrence and Michael Crichton.

It's nice when a font provides old style figures, small caps and alternate letters. But what if my typesetting program doesn't support Open Type features? The solution may be old-fashioned, but it's effective: the variants are placed in separate font families: Standard, Old Style Figures (OSF), and Small Caps (SC). Any word processor can handle it. Carta is a map font designed at Adobe by Lynne Garell in 1986. Carta's development began with the study of a variety of maps from sources such as the U.S. Geological Survey and National Geographic. Vigorous is a clean and crisp, display font set. As their names imply, Vigorous Lower Case has a lowercase alphabet while Vigorous Small Caps has small caps in place of the lowercase alphabet. Full of texture and regal personality, Bell Martellus was derived from a book published in 1475 by Henricus Martellus entitled “Liber Insularum.” The writing style is based on the Carolingian Script created by the Emperor Charlemagne and his scribe, Alquin of York, in the 9th century A.D. Thomas Jefferys (ca. 1710–1771) was the best-known map maker in 18th-century England, chiefly because he won (and hyped) the title “Geographer to King George III.” Jefferys was really more an engraver/publisher than a geographer, since he mostly relied on the cartographic materials of others. Still, his maps of the North American colonies were well known. Simpliciter Sans is a typeface based on the lettering used in the 20th century on technical drawings, either written by free hand or using templates. The lettering was made with a round pen, therefore all lines got rounded ends. All lines had the same thickness in uppercase, lowercase and small caps. The upright style was used on construction drawings and the italic style on machine drawings. The backslant style was used on maps for names of water bodies — seas, lakes, rivers etc. — and for water depth.
