Poem Script is a mixed collection of interpretations conjuring a late nineteenth century American pen script style. Though not an actual Italian letterform, this style was called “Italian Alphabet” stemming from an old penman’s term for an alphabet where the stress or shades are opposite their normal placement. The American variant followed from the late eighteenth century British hand also confusingly called “Italian Hand,” which itself evolved from some seventeenth century French batarde scripts. It showcases the phenomenal control and mastery of hand skills required to create such ornamental and lively letters centuries ago. Producing the shaded strokes in reversed positions such as this required holding the pen in a position horizontal to the baseline, or the letterforms would have to be written backwards or by rotating the paper at peculiar and extreme angles to achieve the effect. The Akko typeface family is the first new design from Akira Kobayashi in a very long time - and it is well worth the wait. Picture an industrial strength typeface like the Isonorm™ design. Now blend this with an organic design like the Cooper Black™ typeface. It was the idea of the fusion of these two design concepts that inspired Kobayashi to draw Akko. „My initial idea was to create a sanserif type with a ‚soft-focus‘ effect,“ says Kobayashi. „From here, the design evolved into two families, the robust and structured sanserif Akko and soft and friendly Akko Rounded.“ Akko has a wide range of weights, with options including complementary italics and a new Condensed range. The Bousni family's six faces display links unexpected by most readers of western alphabets. Inspired by both by Arabic calligraphy, and contemporary bitmap design, Bachir Soussi Chiadmi created this playful series of faces. Guilloches were – in the old days – used to make the falsification of banknotes more difficult. The engraving of these intricate lines was done by a highly specialized mechanical machine, which was operated by an equally highly specialized engraving artist. Once the settings for a specific curve were changed back to zero it was very difficult, if not impossible to set them back to the old design. I have designed a useful set of Guilloches that join to form ribbons that create a kind of op-art 3d effect. Under the keys A-U and a-u you find joining pieces. Under the keys V-Z and v-z I placed start- and endpieces. 0-4 are different lenght straight extensions and 5-9 are not quite so straight extensions. All other keys are corner pieces that can be used as stand-alones or put in rows to make for superb decoration. With a little bit of experimentation and maybe colored overlays you can achieve super-phantastic designs. Your elegant type designer Gert Wiescher.
