Architype Ingenieur was inspired by Wim Crouwel’s late 1950s exhibition catalogues and posters, for which he had created a few geometrically constructed, simplified letterforms. In the 1960 Venice Biennale Dutch entry poster, he drew grid-based letters with 45-degree angles for ‘olanda’, the style influenced by his boyhood fascination with naval lettering. A subtle variation appeared in the Stedelijk Museum catalogue for painter Jean Brusselmans. Several dot matrix versions followed. Heinz is inspired by the poster design of Heinz Schulz-Neudamm for Fritz Lang’s famous silent movie Metropolis. Heinz Schulz-Neudamm did quite a lot of work for the German branches of big American movie companies like 20th Century Fox or MGM. His most famous work is probably the title lettering for the Metropolis movie. The original drawing for that poster sold in 2005 in London for 398.000 Pound Sterling (approx. US $ 600.000). Many years ago I created two upside-down typefaces, UpsidedownJJ and UpsidedownTOC. They were based on monospaced or typewriter fonts, and were rotated 180 degrees, which is the same as a vertical flip followed by a horizontal flip. Recently I was reminded that this way of creating an upside-down typeface is not the only way to create an upside-down typeface--a simple vertical flip creates a different one. That is what this typeface is, a simple vertical flip. The original typeface on which this one is based is JetJaneMono.
