There is something straight-forward and no-nonsense about slab serifed typefaces. Calligraphic designs, on the other hand, evoke a sense of humanity and immediacy - even intimacy. ITC Napoleone Slab combines both slab serif and calligraphic design traits into a single typeface design. Heady stuff. The result is unlike almost any other slab serif typeface. According to designer Silvio Napoleone, “The concept developed from my explorations as a student in an independent lettering class. I sketched many historical letterforms by brush. I continued experimenting for several years after, sketching by hand and on the computer. Eventually, I chose the slab serif for production because of its distinctive design quality.” ITC Napoleone Slab is exceptionally versatile. Type Tiles JNL is based on a ‘completed’ version of ‘Alpha-Blox’ by American Type Founders, circa 1944. The capitals, lower case and numerals shown in the sample sheet put out by ATF depicted type made with five-high blocks comprised of modular units spaced two points apart. These units could be combined in varying ways to create custom type of varying heights and widths and was available for purchase in both linear (multi-line) and reverse (white on black) formats. Using the 'reverse' model shown on the sample sheet, all of the characters were re-created digitally, and missing punctuation, foreign characters and other glyphs found in a basic computer font were drawn and added. The 'J' and 'T' in the type sample had truncations, so a more complete character was created for each of those letters. For those wanting an unbroken string of words or blank end caps, there is a double column space on the vertical bar key. A single column space is located on the broken bar key for shorter end caps. PT Root is a contemporary sans serif with strict, laconic forms. It’s a versatile typeface that provides a wide range of possibilities. Regular style works great in long texts (both on screen and in print), as well as in the interfaces. Medium and Demibold are good for signage, while the lightest and boldest styles look great in large sizes and are suitable for the brand identity. PT Root is a sans serif with 10 weights and a variable version. Its character set includes extended Latin and extended Cyrillic, three arrow variants, fractions, index numbers and letters. PT Root automatically lifts dashes and brackets with the case change. It’s a multilayer font so every group consists of 4 fonts – Regular, Back, Front, and 3rd Color. The Regular style is for single color use only and the Back, Front, and 3rd Color styles are necessary if you want to achieve a multicolor effect. Position three identical text boxes exactly on top of each other, apply layer font styles, and choose whatever colors you like. You’ll quickly discover that some icons don’t have 3rd Color style. This is not a mistake – a lot of things look good with just two colors. WEG* font is an experimental type system where legibility isn’t the focus. This project studies how glyphs are constructed and how their ductus can be modified. I explored how far I can move the limits if I don’t worry about the legibility. In Weg, letters are built by a single line that connects them, along with words and paragraphs. When weight decreases, the legibility of the signs increases. This is the first stage. It’s a project in expansion. The set contains uppercase, lining figures and basic punctuation in three weights: Regular, Light and Thin. The current supported languages are Spanish, Guaraní and English. If you need any other language, please let me know. I would like to expand the character set. Second stage project WEG is an experimental in-expansion font family. Here I present to you the second stage. I’m planning the first upgrade for middle 2021. I’m preparing a pattern set for July 2021. Here you can see the first four patterns. A few years ago I've discovered the work of one of the most prolific typeface designers of the Bruce type Foundry in NYC during late nineteenth century. Browsing Julius Herriet's work I found a very unique kind of ligatures in his patented "Old Style Ornamented" type design. Some letters were designed with a little top tail that allowed them to connect to each other. After that, I found that he also designed a single italic weight of the same font 7 years later. Since the beginning of the Opentype days I’ve been deeply obsessed with exploring different ways to build ligatures, so that lead me up to this point where I felt the need to create “Plethora”, this new font inspired by Herriet’s work. Extrapolating weights, adding variable technology and playing with additional interconnected letters and alternates. Definitely, Plethora means a large or excessive amount of something, and this font tries to bring back this abundance of details two centuries later. Available in 9 weights, from roman to italic, and also as variable format, “Plethora” supports plenty of latin languages and is a perfect choice for today’s design tides.

Quiller is another catch from the hot metal days, another one that managed to slip through the fingers of both the photo-typers and digitizers of last 4 decades. JJ Sierke’s Privat design from 1966 is now resurrected and heavily extended to be used by computer users everywhere. The original design was revived, and two whole new fonts were added to it - one with very unique swash caps and alternates, and one with many many ligatures and letter-combination ornaments. Quiller is a cross between brush calligraphy and very casual fast handwriting. It even has a slight Arabic simulation to it. Given such traits, the addition of a swash font and a multitude of ligatures comes in very handy to keep the natural flow of the font and maintain the elegance of its spirit. Those who like the auto-magic of OpenType’s intelligent substitution should like the fact that the OTF version is a single font with all the bells and whistles ready to go in the swash and discretionary ligatures features. Graphit is a typeface designed by Lit Design Studio & curated by HvD Fonts. It combines clear, geometric shapes with edgy yet finely-crafted details. Graphit features uncompromising characters such as G, Q, f, k and 1. It works well both for impactful headlines and for reading sizes. The type family consists of six weights plus matching italics. In early 2018, Livius Dietzel & Tom Hoßfeld started developing the typeface’s essential character and released a free font named after the studio, Lit. The challenge was to create a single typeface weight that was versatile enough without a large font family, and could be put to use with a variety of media formats, from book text to advertising spreads, all while remaining legible and delightful to read. Originally designed between the years 2002 and 2004, the inspiration for the design originated from the concepts of Stefano Giovannoni's uber-contemporary industrial designs and architecture. Where to start with such a font design was obvious to Diphthong Regular's designer, Max Hancock; to create a transitional, slab serif form that was corky and serious, interchangeably. The characteristics of the font followed a postmodern playfulness, popular in many sub-cultures looking for an alternative to the harsher, cut-shape, deconstructivist styles. And, the unique objective behind the design was to make it so that the usual difficult combination of the t and h (hth) in language was legible as well as pleasant to look at, thus the reason for the name. The soft, subtle roundings add a flair of utilitarianism while the cut edge ascenders help to blur the line between cute and diametrical mannerisms.

The typeface was designed for ParaType in 2002 by Dmitry Kirsanov. Based on the Mesolithic images on stones were discovered in a prehistoric cave of Mas d’Asil, France. There is a great number of hypotheses explaining the function of the mysterious stones. They have been considered as vessels of souls, computation tools, fortune-telling and magic symbols, relics of prehistoric writing system.

Over the past few years, every designer has seen the surprising outbreak of blackletter types in marketing campaigns for major sports clothing manufacturers, a few phone companies, soft drink makers, and more recently on entertainment and music products. In such campaigns, blackletter type combined with photos of usual daily activity simply adds a level of strength and mystique to things we see and do on a regular basis. But we couldn't help noticing that the typography was very odd in such campaigns, where the type overpowers all the other design elements. This is because almost all blackletter fonts ever made express too much strength and time-stamp themselves in a definite manner, thereby eliminating themselves as possible type choices for a variety of common contemporary design approaches, such as minimal, geometric, modular, etc. So extending the idea of using blackletter in modern design was a bit of a wild goose chase for us. But we finally found the face that completes the equation no other blackletter could fit into: Leather is a digitization and major expansion of Imre Reiner's forgotten but excellent 1933 Gotika design, which was very much ahead of its time. In its own time this design saw very little use because it caused problems to printers, where the thin serifs and inner bars were too fragile and broke off too easily when used in metal. But now, more than seventy years later, it seems like it was made for current technologies, and it is nothing short of being the perfect candidate for using blackletter in grid-based settings. Leather has three features usually not found in other blackletter fonts: - Grid-based geometric strokes and curves: In the early 1930s, blackletter design had already begun interacting back with the modern sans serif it birthed at the turn of the century. This design is one of the very few manifestations of such interaction. - Fragile, Boboni-like serifs, sprout from mostly expected places in the minuscules, but are sprinkled very aesthetically on some of the majuscules. The overall result is magnificently modern. - The usual complexity of blackletter uppercase's inner bars is rendered simple, geometric and very visually appealing. The contrast between the inner bars and thick outer strokes creates a surprising circuitry-like effect on some of the letters (D, O, Q), wonderfully plays with the idea of fragile balances on some others (M, N and P), and boldly introduces new concepts on others (B, F, K, L, R). Our research seems to suggest that the original numerals used with this design in the 1930s were adopted from a previous Imre Reiner typeface. They didn't really fit with the idea of this font, so we created brand new numerals for Leather. We also expanded the character set to cover all Western Latin-based languages, and scattered plenty of alternates and ligatures throughout the map. The name, Leather, was derived from a humorous attempt at naming a font. Initially we wanted to call it Black Leather (blackletter...blackleather), but the closer we came to finishing it, the more respect we developed for its attempt to introduce a plausible convergence between two entirely different type categories. Sadly for the art, this idea of convergence didn't go much further back then, due to technological limitations and the eventual war a few years later. We're hoping this revival would encourage people to look at blackletter under a new light in these modern times of multiple design influences.

A renovation/excavation at a downtown urban construction site reveals the old ad on exterior brick. Barn Owl provides the headline in your project with the ultimate in aged retro visualization. There are a few professions in which being left-handed confers an advantage-think of the great southpaw pitchers in major league baseball, like Sandy Koufax. Now, think of all the great left-handed calligraphers. Not so easy, right? Here's a hint: Luis Siquot. Far from being an advantage, Siquot's lefty orientation proved a hurdle to overcome. When I was young, I had serious problems writing," he recalls. "If there was a lot of text, I almost always soiled the paper with wet ink as my hand followed the pen." Then, a friend told Siquot about a special store in London that catered to left-handed people. It was there that he found an Osmiroid pen specially designed for left-handed calligraphers.
