The pattern for this font was found in the 1906 specimen book for the Keystone Type Foundry under the name Ancient Gothic, which is a pretty accurate description of the particular appeal of this typeface. Use it liberally anytime you want to add an air of mystery or menace...or simply some quaint charm. Both versions of the font include complete Latin 1252, Central European 1250 and Turkish 1524 character sets, with localization for Moldovan, Romanian and Turkish.

Figgins and Caslon may be names familiar to many as Type Founders. Indeed they are, but they are perhaps less well known for the emergence of Sans Serif type styles which have become part of our lives since 1889. The first hundred years of this style is celebrated with this design by Adrian Williams, completed in 1989. It echoes many features of the Gothic, Grotesque and Sans Serif models of the period, based particularly on the 1870 Figgins.

Rahere Esoteric is a gothic-flavoured, quasi-Roman display font with an eccentric persona and more quirks than a Tim Burton film. A member of the extended Rahere typeface family, it’s the enigmatic cousin of Rahere Roman Display & Rahere Sans. This is a niche display font that doesn’t try to please everyone. Rahere Esoteric revels in its mystical aura, using a bewildering array of ligatures to magically transmute itself as characters loop, curl, jerk and strut, randomly connecting and disconnecting into words like a retro-futuristic steam train clattering along a disused railway track, challenging and delighting the reader at the same time. To add more sparkle, there are alternatives, inferior and superior caps plus a [Wicca] basketful of symbols, ornaments, weird faces and even a snake-infused ampersand. Whilst Rahere Esoteric has been designed primarily as an all-caps font, the lowercase slots contain small caps with corresponding numerals. However, because this is an arcane, unpredictable font, order and regularity are frowned upon, which means there are no tabular numerals – so company reports or accounts are a solid no! Unless they’re for the Golden Circle of Alchemists PLC or Gothic Blackstar Corporation. It is ideal for all things pagan, esoteric, alchemy, other-worldly or magic-related projects and particularly useful for music genres across the Gothic / Darkwave / Ethereal spectrum. What about legibility? Hey, look into my eyes: Esoteric is all about the mystique. If a secondary font is needed for the important stuff, I recommend its cousin, Rahere Sans, which pairs beautifully with this display font and is perfect for long passages or small text. The initial idea for Rahere Esoteric came about during a visit to Whitby, a small coastal town in Yorkshire, UK and famous for its inclusion in Bram Stoker’s novel, Dracula. A Steampunk festival was in full swing and the narrow streets of the town centre were teeming with people adorned in a glorious fusion of clothing and accessories influenced by a love of 19th-century life, science fiction, horror, fashion and art. I was fascinated by the juxtapositions of colour, patterns, material and style – archaic mechanical Sci-fi, gothic, the American Wild West and romantic Victorian. But what intrigued me the most, somehow, all the disparate elements worked as a whole. Thus, like Frankenstein, this font jolted into existence. The Yenisei Inscriptions consist of a total of 158 Turkish inscriptions, kurgans (graves) and rock stones that have been found along the Yenisei River, which passes through the Khakasya, Tuva and Altai Autonomous Republics in Russia. The inscriptions were written with Turkish Stamps, which we know as the Orkhon Alphabet. In addition, there are dozens of versions of the Turkish Runic script, apart from the Yenisei inscriptions and the Orkhon inscriptions. I will present the other versions here as soon as possible.

Patricia Pothin-Roesch's Saussa typeface began life as brush-lettered artwork for fruit salad packaging in France. After the key letters had been painted, Patricia Pothin-Roesch switched to digital tools to create the final font. True to its roots, Saussa is a real advertising face, perfect for point-of-purchase displays. Even its name is consistent with its intended area of application: Saussa sounds a lot like the word “sauce.” Saussa is an informal script; its outstrokes function almost like serifs, and the capitals have a lowercase structure. The feelings this typeface conveys are due to the hand of its creator, Patricia Pothin-Roesch, an experienced brush-letterer.

Dynasty is an extensive and versatile family that exploration and modernisation of the typographic quirks associated with the 'American Gothic' type school (in much the same way as English Grotesque was an exploration of Gill/Johnston idea-space) and adds chamfered elements to dots and tails to emphasise and extend the early machine-made aesthetic. Elegantly clean and readable at headline and small text settings, where (as with all fonts in small sizes) the introduction of tracking will improve legibility.

Rokha is a wedge-serif typeface with 5 weights plus obliques. Its sharp serifs were inspired by Goudy's classic Copperplate Gothic, Rokha feels land looks like carved stone, edgy and sharp. Magdelin is a minimal yet warm gothic sans with normal and alternate families. At its core, the design has simple forms and low contrast, yet it takes some qualities from the humanist class with its calligraphy or cursive-inspired details found in the italics and the bowl shapes of characters like b and d. Bluenote is a font based on Franklin Gothic condensed. In the 60s and 70s the record label Blue Note published all those classic jazz records of my youth. Gothic fraktur inspired design, I wanted to resemble old german calligraphy but making it very geometric, so I used an isometric reticle during sketching. This is a display font, created for BIG sizes, non textual. I recommend it for branding, poster, logos or titles. Its very experimental -- it exists within the limits of legible and illegible reading. I choose the name “Garbancera” because gothic calligraphy has issues that are linked with dark, gloomy, lugubrious things or fear feelings, culturally in Mexico. I related this with death and for mexicans, death is something we celebrate and give us joy and happiness, annoying, the most representative Mexican characters, one of those is “La Calavera Garbancera” or better known as “La Catrina”, a clothes skeleton with only a hat. It was drawn this way to make a critic to all Mexicans at that time, that were poor but they wanted to represent a high lifestyle, “those that where to the bones, but with a French hat with ostrich feathers”. La Catrina was created by José Guadalupe Posada, a Mexican lithographer but also a newspaper illustrator. I think this is a beautiful font that can lead to great results, just use it wisely.

Lionheart is the digitization and expansion of Saladin, a neo-gothic typeface designed by Friedrich Poppl, long after he established himself as one of the greatest German designers of all time with some of the most “ausgezeichnet” scripts and text faces to ever come out of Europe. This typeface, though lesser-known among Poppl’s other masterpieces, was one of the first in its genre to abandon blackletter influence and attempt letter variations based strictly on Roman alphabet shapes. Royalbrick is a contemporary display unicase typeface. It is a part of upcoming type family — light and condensed style. The font was inspired by factory stamps’ typography on bricks made in 19-20 century on Russian manufactures — this kind of bricks was also called “royal bricks”. It has a unique image with “squashed” stems and dynamic expanding strokes, and there are also some kind of ancient Cyrillic’s vibes in it’s letterforms. It is an excellent example of combining national character with modern trends and expressive graphics. Royalbrick consist of extended Latin and Cyrillic, figures, two sets of punctuation (normal and "thin" with ss01), few ligatures and stylistic alternatives and a special set for letters with accents — ss02 named "Downstairs Accents". Titul is a display typeface with strong historical connotations. It is based on a series of stylish lettering for book covers, designed by Russian graphic artist Alexander Leo in the 1920s. The historical reference for him was book design of the 1st half of the 19th century. Type family consists of four ornamented and three basic styles: one solid, one inline and one striped. All seven faces have corresponding oblique styles. Also, there is a beautiful vignette font and a style for constructing ornamental borders. Hennigar is a Neo Grotesque sans serif especially useful for display text and headlines. Many of the rounded letters are based on the appearance of the letter O with very little variation in width. Because of it's condensed nature the apertures are narrow with extenders that dip well below the base line. Similarly many of the lowercase characters are based on the lowercase o. Terminals and tails always point east/west giving the entire alphabet a very uniform appearance. The first version of Kremlin was designed at ParaType (ParaGraph) in 1995 by Tagir Safayev. Based on an informal handwriting. Kremlin is a Russian word for a fortress or a citadel. The reason why the author selected this word for the font name is not quite clear even for him. Probably the appearance of the text line set in this font resembled a tight fence. Later the font was expanded in character set and got two style variations with extended proportions. The suffix "Pro" in the name was added to distinguish the new version from the previous one. In 1805, December second, the Napoleonic French army won the famous battle of Austerlitz, against Autrichian and Russian armies. Napoleon was a great general, but his hand-writing was not legible at all, so he employed a few secretaries who wrote the official mail. This font was created, inspired from letters written by one of these professional secretaries and scribes in the months before the battle. We propose it as a typical example of the French Hand from this period. The font contains numerous ligatures and alternative characters so as to look as close as possible to real handwriting. The standard full set is complete with accented or specific characters for West (Including Celtic) and Central European, Baltic, Romanian, Hungarian and Turkish languages.
