It's clear, fat and juicy - it's my Solo Beats font! It has got that organic feeling of something handmade...and that is exactly what it is. Even though I digitally removed some inkblobs here and there, the handmade look is quite clear!

Wood Type Grotesk JNL was re-drawn from a set of vintage wood type purchased from a closed rubber stamp shop. Although the style of lettering is referred to in old type catalogs as a "grotesk" face, in truth the lettering has charm and effectively gets the printed point across to the reader. This typeface is available in both regular and oblique versions.

The hand lettering for the movie posters and collateral items for the 1962 film "Mondo Cane" inspired Doggone It JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions. "Mondo Cane" loosely translates into "A Dog's World", and the subject of the travelogue documentary consisted mainly of unusual cultural practices around the world that many would find perverse, depraved or shocking.

In the 1934 edition of the American Type Foundry’s “Book of American Type” is a selection of letterpress fonts which emulate typewriter faces. One design named “Bulletin Typewriter” served at the model for Cub Reporter JNL, and is available in both regular and oblique versions. The font has been monospaced in order to add a more traditional typewriter look to any project.

This pseudo-Egyptian fantasy originally was named Karnac, and was unearthed in the pages of the 1888 American Type Founders Specimen Book. This version derives it name from a continuing character from Johnny Carson's stint on the Tonight show. ITC Humana Sans font is the work of British designer Timothy Donaldson, an extended and versatile font family with a large array of variations. Donaldson first created ITC Humana Script with a broad-tipped pen and then went on to design the corresponding roman. While viewing a YouTube video of film footage in and around New York in the mid-1930s, one scene showed some people “window shopping” by the storefront office of the French Line, an international steamship service. A screen capture allowed the storefront sign to be recreated as the digital typeface Steamship JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Cirkulus is an experimental display face, constructed using combinations of hairline circles and straight lines. The typeface was designed by Michael Neugebauer in 1970. The letters exude a constructivist aura, reminiscent of both the revolutionary 1920s, and the digital experiments of the 1990s. Cirkulus is a unicase alphabet, with a very lightweight appearance, and should be used solely in large display sizes.

Inspired by an image of a 1960s rock and roll concert poster for “The Beach Boys Summer Safari”, this typeface captures the casual, informal lettering of the main headline and makes it available digitally. Stefan Claudius developed this font while he was sitting in a small chalet in Denmark with a hot wood-oven and nothing but snow outside. Probably the amount of white led him to make it so thin and to have as much space between the lines as possible. If you have that in mind, it looks best in large sizes.

An interesting, unusual and righteously funky variation on the classic “Barnum” style of lettering, this typeface was originally named "Dado". As any woodworker knows, dado is also the name of a slot ploughed, chiseled or cut in wood: in other words, a groove thang. Both versions of the font include 1252 Latin and 1250 CE (with localization for Romanian and Moldovan) character sets.

Will Ransom designed the exemplar for this series for Barnhart Brothers & Spindler in the early 1900s. The typeface was originally named "Parsons", after the advertising director of a Chicago department store (evidently a very BIG customer of BB&S). Both versions of this font contain the Unicode 1252 (Latin) and Unicode 1250 (Central European) character sets, with localization for Romanian and Moldovan.

An unannotated photocopy tucked inside the leaves of an old lettering book yielded this unusual and exuberant Art Deco face. The caps feature a simple “bubbly” pattern that makes this offering pack a punch, not unlike the German cherry brandy for which it is named. Both versions of the font include 1252 Latin, 1250 CE (with localization for Romanian and Moldovan).

While strolling through the Phillips Collection in Washington, DC, I came across a delightful painting by Wassily Kandinsky entitled “Succession”. Many of the forms seemed to me typographic so, of course, a font followed, and this is it: wild, wacky and delightfully different. Both versions of the font include 1252 Latin and 1250 CE (with localization for Romanian and Moldovan) character sets.

Jazz Trumpeter JNL is an unusual type design modeled after the title card for the 1945 movie comedy “The Horn Blows at Midnight” starring Jack Benny and is available in both regular and oblique versions. This Art Deco sans serif font has the distinction of being somewhat calligraphic, yet futuristic in its visual appearance… and even has some subtle hints of Blackletter influences.

Hoakey is not really a grunge font, although it comes with rugged edges and a worn surface. This may sound like a grunge typeface, but Hoakey is a lot more than that! It oozes romance. Hoakey has curly alternate uppercase letters, and ligatures for both double lowercase and double numbers. You will need to use OpenType supporting applications to use the autoligatures.

This assertively Art Deco face is based on Cubist Bold, designed by John W. Zimmerman for Barnhart Brothers & Spindler in 1929, and takes its name from one of the co-founders—with Pablo Picasso—of the Cubist Movement. Both versions of this font contain the complete Unicode 1252 (Latin) and Unicode 1250 (Central European) character sets, with localization for Romanian and Moldovan.

The August 11, 1929 issue of “The Film Daily” carried an ad for Tiffany-Stahl Productions’ presentation of a special film release featuring a wrestling match between “Strangler” Lewis and Gus Sonnenburg. The hand lettering for the ad was rendered in an Art Deco sans serif style, and is now available digitally as Film Event JNL in both regular and oblique versions.

Lisboa Swash is a display humanist sans-serif typeface and it was designed for big sizes purposes. Dollar Tree Stores imports a number of items from China, and many times these are limited-run products only available until the existing supplies run out. One such item was a sans serif stencil lettering guide with rounded ends that takes on the look of 1980s-influenced techno lettering. An old favorite from the venerable Letragraphica series, named Yankee Shadow and designed by Tony Geddes, provides the pattern for this sporty font. Hamuel Nine Five was inspired by two sources, both with few letters, and different styles. The first one was a fresco in the el-Transito Synagogue, Toledo, built in 1357 by order of Samuel Abulafia, treasurer to the king of Castile. The second one was a mezuzah cover, Morocco, 19th century. Hamuel Nine Five is an OpenType/TTF Unicode font.

Based in part on the hand-lettered title for a piece of vintage sheet music, Hayride JNL gets both its inspiration and name from Michael Todd's 1948 production "Mexican Hayride". The original design was in outline form, and the letters with straight-lined shapes had slight curves to them. For Hayride JNL, those lines were straightened and the letters made solid in appearance.

It’s Art Deco “thick and thin”… It’s wide… It’s quirky… It’s a hand lettered sign over the lanes of the Bryant-Lake Bowl – a landmark bowling alley in Minneapolis, Minnesota… and it was spotted in an amazing YouTube video from a “drone tour” of the facility! The sign inspired the font Pin Spotter JNL which is available in both regular and oblique versions.
