A group of unique metal plates with stencil initials cut into them was spotted while browsing through online auctions for source material. What made these items even more interesting was how some of the stencil letters had been sectionally divided - not vertically or horizontally as in most stencils, but lines cut at angles. This is the basis for Steel Stencil JNL and Steel Stencil Oblique JNL.

A recent walk down memory lane through old college sketchbooks revealed a collection of caricature fish doodles. Then the sketches were discovered by my son who, being a marine life enthusiast, promptly demanded that I draw more fish. Thus, a collection of 71 fish-inspired drawings and bubbly numbers was born. There is even a lemon, since no fish is really complete without one.

Bo Berndal's handwriting was terrible in his younger days, and he could not even read his own notes. When he started out as an apprentice in a printing shop, he started to copy Garamond italic and formed his own style of writing. Robert Moore is a font that was specially designed for comics. A lot of work has been done. At first, glyphs were drawn manually using different markers, then they were transferred to the font. The font was tested on real printing and digital comics. The world of fonts for comics is big and I wanted to create even more variability for authors with one family, which is why a variable version was created containing two axes: weight and italics. Derived from a photograph Rian Hughes took in Hong Kong, the Roadkill family of typefaces is a literal interpretation of rough and worn road lettering. The original provided almost all of the key character shapes, with the others being designed to keep the unique hand painted feel intact. Most of the letters have alternate versions provided. This font works equally well at wider letterspacing settings. Chop chop! VLNL Cleaver is an important tool in the Vette Letters’ kitchen. It’s a butcher knife of a font. Razor sharp, ultra heavy and with pointy slanted serifs. At first glance it seems straight-lined, but a closer look revails that all straight lines are curved inward slightly, which enhances the sharp image even more. Cleaver was originally designed by DBXL for cutting meat - hell, it even hacks right through bone. It can easily splice a chicken in one slash or seperate ribs, just like that. You can also very well use it to chop up hard vegetables like pumpkin or squash on the chopping block. It gets better, the opposite blunt side can be deployed to crush ingredients like garlic, nuts or spices like black pepper. You could use a grinder, but with Cleaver it’s more fun, isn’t it? VLNL Cleaver is suitable to give a sharp edge to flyers, posters, logos (Heavy metal bands and other) or magazine headlines.

Armature Neue is an extension and clarification of the original Armature family released in 1997. We made the distribution of weights more even, and added italics extra light and black weights. Originally consisting of four fonts, Armature Neue has twelve: six weights with accompanying italics. Although conceived as a display face, a number of alternate characters are included that can be used to regularize the type for text setting. Armature is one result of my interest in typefaces that are constructed, rather than drawn. Although it is basically a monoline design, there are subtle details throughout that compensate for a monoline’s evenness. As with all fontBoy fonts, there are dingbats hidden away in the dark recesses of the keyboard. When I first started designing this face in 1992, I called it Dino-I thought I would name all my fonts after famous pets-so the dingbats for Armature are dinosaurs. Designed by Bob Aufuldish with editing and production by Psy/Ops.

Scan is literally a barcode font, made of actual barcodes, shaped in De Stijl style. It is a monospace, all-caps font with two different barcodes per letter. These offer the user a choice of a heavier look with the upper case and a lighter look with the lower case. Numbers and letters each have their own distinct barcodes. Also included are an alternate K and R. This font offers numerous ways to create artistic presentations with its unusual design. In certain contexts it has a foreboding look of impending doom, or a cool, cutting edge futuristic look, which lends itself to artwork for album covers, video games, movies, television, novels, and more. It can even have a whimsical look with the use of different colors for its individual bars. Some renderings reveal a ridged or textured look, even a 3D or three dimensional look. Offhand Brush is a fast and spontaneous brush font with quite a messy feel, a great option for book covers, packaging projects, album art, web titles, and even small chunks of text. It looks messy, but don't get it wrong: on the inside, it's a laborious piece of work, with four alternates for each Latin letter and two for numerals, as well as two options for Cyrillic and Greek letters. To make things even more uneven, there are still a few different letter designs programmed to pop up when specific combinations of three or four glyphs appear in the text. These are managed by the OpenType 'Standard Ligatures' feature, although they are far from standard and are not quite ligatures. And why so? Because this way it will usually be on by default, making the font way more interesting. Hey, wait! There are some ornaments too. And a couple of contextual kerning pairs, hell yes! Use it big!

What do you imagine the ideal casual invitation font would look like? It has to be cheerful, inviting, legible, creative, and loads of fun. But first and foremost, it has to look like real handwriting. Fonts seeming like real handwriting are always a major task, and although Canada Type already has plenty of fonts that solve the “looks like handwriting” issue in a variety of ways, we're once again raising the bar a little higher with this one. Birthday is a massive package that crosses the traditional font/handwriting solution of 2-letter ligatures and waltzes into the land of 3-letter combinations. Plenty of them, too! The complete Postscript and True Type versions of Birthday ship with no less than five separate fonts full of nothing but ligatures. And for even more realism, an alternates font is also included in the package, for a total of seven fonts of happy handwriting that can be used anywhere and everywhere personalization is of importance to a layout.
