Painting Stencil JNL was modeled in part from a vintage set of 8 inch Gothic stencils. Alphabets of this size were generally referred to as painting stencils because each letter could be painted individually in marking signs, streets or buildings, where the classic 'lettering guide' type of stencils were used for smaller projects and had alignment holes for accurate letter spacing as well as multiples letters per page.

Free-flowing pen lettering of the Art Nouveau period took letter forms into interesting curves and angles. The style was embraced and revived by the 1960s counter-culture in its rock concert posters and record album covers. However, the source for Casual Nouveau JNL is a 1911 piece of sheet music entitled "Back to the Carolina You Love".

I searched all over the internet looking for a realistic sand writing font and came away empty handed. Undaunted by this, I grabbed my business partner, Mary and trekked down to our local river, the Arkansas (pronounced ar-KAN-sas around here). Using sticks, we scratched out the entire alphabet in the sand, including upper & lowercase, and punctuation marks! I photographed the characters, converted them to line art on my computer and used font creating software to turn it into a true type font! This font was designed for adding dates, places and messages to your beach photos that looked as if you wrote it in the sand before you took the picture! It is a decorative font best used in large, headline sizes. To make it appear more realistic, select a darker color from the sand in the photo to use for the type instead of black!

Bavaroir looks like a techno party in the throne room of Neuschwanstein: grandiose, original and still high-tech, modern, stylish and chic? anything but lifeless. The design experiment was to create a sans serif based on ?dropping endings?. Something between elegance and protest, Bavaroir coquettishly hides its edges. Although pretty narrow in design, Bavaroir still flows easily, openly and well readably, even in very small sizes. Bavaoir was designed for the URW++ FontForum.

A connected typeface design with a calligraphic flavor. The Lahab (Arabic for flame) font family employs visual features from the Arabic Diwani Calligraphy. It has six members, normal, bold, and light, all of which come in two styles, regular and left-slanted italic styles. This font family design follows the guidelines of Mutamathil Taqlidi type style with one glyph for every basic Arabic Unicode character or letter, as defined in the latest Unicode Standards, and one additional final form glyph, for the freely-connecting letters in traditional Arabic cursive text. Lahab employs variable x-height values. It includes only the Lam-Alif ligatures. Soft-vowel diacritic marks, harakat, are selectively positioned. Most of them appear by default on the same level, following a letter, to ensure that they would not interfere visually with letters. Tatweel is a zero-width glyph. Keying the tatweel key before Alif-Lam-Lam-Ha will display the Allah ligature. Lahab includes both Arabic and Arabic-Indic numerals, in addition to standard punctuations.

Jessie's Letter is based on an old typed letter by Kerrie's great step grandmother. This letter was undated, but we think it must have been from the 1920s or so. Jessie wasn't much for punctuation, so there aren't any of those pesky question marks and exclamation points. But, she did make mistakes in her typing, so we've included cross outs and strange resulting characters to make up for the lack of everyday punctuation. Maybe Jessie wanted to visit Paris, or maybe she secretly made paintings in her back yard, or maybe she dreamed of painting her house bright pink. Well, maybe not, but it's fun to dream...

Das Riese, a type specimen by the most productive Brazilian type foundry, Intellecta Design, is a mix of victorian and art deco influences. A beautiful display type for tiling with uppercases only. It's shadows and volumes refer to pre-modern age whereas its surface to last century 20's. This heavy sans serif strokes characters have a particular appearance, a parallel line texture that reminds Bifur, typeface created in 1929 by A. M. Cassandre. The sideways absence of volume at some leaning letters right side in addition to the patchy darkness of shadows support its handmade design. Beware: Here be Dragons! It Be Dangeroues to Venture Yonder! This warning, inscribed on a rock at the entrance of a cave in an inaccessible mountain in the far north of Scotland, provided the inspiration for the font DragonFyre. While I have not seen the actual rock myself, I have based the font on an accurate drawing of the original inscription. DragonFyre speaks of lands beyond our ken, of wistful faerie kingdoms, of dark happenings and white magic. Use it at your peril, for its very use will conjure up worlds long forgotten, places of faeries, elves and hobgoblins, of ogres and giants. Those who read texts written in this font may well have their lives strangely changed. I have included a complete character set of 242 characters; upper and lower case; as well as all accented and special characters. All characters have been carefully letterspaced and kerned. For maximum dramatic impact I suggest you use combinations of both upper- and lower-case characters.

The exclamation mark is louder and more manic, because people tend to write two or three exclamation marks after each other anyway. The full stop is more stopping and the hyphen kicks you on to the next word. I wanted to break apart from the usual Comic Sans like typefaces used for decades in Pop cultural mainstream Comics, and wanted something very sublime and independent in style concurrent to the the parallel digital media of Web Comic genre. It's been said that creativity requires ten parts to perspiration to one part inspiration. But not always. According to its creator, Mira Vucko, ITC Needlescript was designed in one breath." An accomplished lettering artist, Vucko was sketching letters one afternoon. "I was using a calligraphy nib and was drawing the alphabet without much thought," she recalls. "When I allowed the down strokes of a couple of letters to fall below the baseline, I realized that I had created the impression of movement. I kept drawing letters in this fashion and did the same with horizontal lines. I added a firm ending to the descenders. Instead of dots above the 'i' and 'j,' I placed strokes in the opposite direction." In this way, the first characters that were to become ITC Needlescript emerged. The finished design is a lively, distinctive alphabet that produces a striking texture on the page. Letters intertwine and overlap to create a sense of movement and graphic intensity, especially when reversed out of a dark background. Vucko lives, works and was educated in Zagreb, Croatia. She lived in France and Sweden while in her twenties, but then returned to Croatia to work as a graphic designer for the country's largest newspaper. It was here that her passion for type and typography was born. Vucko has since gone on to become one of Croatia's leading graphic designers, and has won many awards for her advertising and packaging design.
