Stencil Patterns JNL collects into one digital file a number of decorative stencil patterns from decades past. These charming illustrations were re-drawn by Jeff Levine using images of vintage oilboard stencils made over fifty years ago. While these are useful as stand-alone embellishments for any print projects, they can also be scaled and printed out onto card or acetate stock for hand-cutting as new stencil templates. A special note of thanks goes to fellow type designer and author, Leslie Cabarga. He supplied the bulk of the images used in designing this font file. There are left and right pointing hands on the parenthesis keys, and a decorative ampersand on its respective key.

We all love a good burger here at Vette Letters. We also love to prepare them ourselves. Grilling the patties, cutting the tomatoes and cucumber, nothing beats a home made hamburger. And the best and tastiest way to grill a burger is on a wood charcoal grill. So all in all we can safely say that burgers and wood are a pretty darn good combination. This made Donald Roos decide to design VLNL Woodburger, obviously based on 19th century American wood type alphabets. Donald decided to add cyrillic characters, as he strongly believed that Russians would be equally partial to home made burgers. VLNL Woodburger is not really polished font, it will give any design a rough sturdy edge.

The hand lettered credits from the 1942 British film comedy “The Goose Steps Out” became the model for Goose Creek JNL, a simple sans serif design available in both regular and oblique versions. According to the Internet Movie Database (imdb), “A bumbling teacher turns out to be the double of a German general. He is flown into Germany to impersonate the general and cause chaos and hilarity in a Hitler Youth college.” The title is a parody of the “goosestep” style of marching by German soldiers during World War II. As a variant on the movie’s title, the font was named for Goose Creek, South Carolina – a charming community just northeast of historic Charleston.

Blackletter fonts are timelessly beautiful and still very popular. At some point, it seems that every type designer discovers the beauty of these forms and the great pleasure in creating blackletter characters. Like also Dutch designer Coen Hofmann who, after designing Caxtonian Gothic, has designed yet another Blackletter font: Holland Gothic. Holland Gothic reminds of the 18th century »Duytsch« typefaces of Joan Michael Fleischmann and Christoffel Van Dyck. But Hofmann was mainly inspired by the Dutch calligraphers from the 17th and 18th century. Holland Gothic develops its full charm and beauty at larger sizes because of the hairlines in the upper case characters. To enable users composing texts in the style of our ancestors, Coen Hofmann added a series of pre-composed ligatures, also in combination with the long s, plus an alternate form for the lower case r which was used in combination with letters b, d, g, o, p, v, and w.

Mandelia was created by Alex Kaczun, an American type designer, in 2010. The typeface was named in honor of Nelson Mandela, former president of South Africa, for his “shining example of the incredible strength of the human spirit to persevere in the face of adversity for the pursuit of freedom”. Mandelia is a strong, bold and wide-bodied serif typeface design, reminiscent of the great African landscape with its diverse animal life. It’s easy to see the influence of the 'Rhino' sharp serifs and ‘Elephant’ size stems and proportions. The font commands attention and respect. Witchcraft is a classic Roman font in three weights and corresponding italics. The ‘v’,’w’,and ‘y’, use the old style join at the top reminiscent of Georg Belwe’s Roman design “Belwe”. The large x-height makes for a powerful headline font but excellent for text setting especially in the lighter weights.

The "Trajana Sans" is a sans-serif typeface family based on the shapes and proportions of the characters in the Trajan's Column in Rome. It consists of 4 weights, Light, Regular, DemiBold & Bold. Ideal to give a classic look and renewed our jobs without having to resort to the usual Trajan font.

Octagonist JNL is based on ‘Octagon’ [which was introduced in the George Nesbitt 1838 specimens of wood type] and is available in regular, oblique, solid and solid oblique versions. The font’s name is partly an homage (to the original type name) while at the same time making a pun on the word ‘Antagonist’.

The orthography was invented in 1952 by a Sufi Sheikh, named Hussein Sheikh Ahmed Kaddare. A phonetically robust writing system, the technical commissions that appraised the Kaddare alphabet concurred that it was the most accurate indigenous script and orthography for transcribing the Somali language. Kaddare uses both upper and lower case letters, with the lower case represented in cursive.

Centennial appeared in 1986 in honor of Linotype’s 100th birthday. The roman and light cuts of the font are reminiscent of the Century typeface, particularly on that of Linn B. Benton and Morris F. Benton, designed around the turn of the 19th century for the American Type Founders. Like Century, Centennial too embodies a cool, reserved neutrality.

The Parkway font family was inspired the Parkway Theater marquee in south Minneapolis and the abandoned hotel signage along a strip of U.S. highway running from Tallahassee to Tampa in Florida. A classic retro font trio, the Parkways speak of nostalgia and Americana. Looks like the little metal tag that dealers stick on the trunk of new cars.

Visual Arts JNL is a classic Art Deco typeface based on the hand lettering found on a 1930s-era WPA (Works Progress Administration) poster for Women Artists. The exhibit took place in the Federal Art Gallery in Boston, and was part of the arts project underwritten by the WPA to keep many creative people working during the Depression years.

The May 7, 1936 issue of “The Film Daily” carried an ad for the Will Rogers Memorial Hospital Fund. (In August of 1935 Rogers, along with famed aviator Wiley Post died in a plane crash.) While the fundraising for the hospital was a serious event, Rogers is remembered as a humorist, hence the font’s name of Humorist JNL.

With Zeitgeist, designer Michael Johnson explored the limitations of early digital technology: the letters are built up in the style of low resolution bitmaps. The design was completely carried out on-screen. Kilometro Display is a Font Family inspired by the chrome car emblems of the auto industry. In the early 1950s Car manufacturers started using this sort of joint-lettering (script) to write their brand or model on their cars. The trend quickly made it’s way to other industries like electric appliances and it lasted for a good 30 plus years. Today only a handful of brands still uses this font style for their products. This geometric script re-lives a bold past all the way through 5 styles to a thin future.

The original sketch of Joker was drawn by Viktor Kharyk in 1978 as experiment on creation type by a method of subtraction. In 2000 the font was digitized, modified and Hebrew, Greek, Georgian, Armenian and Arabi? alphabets and outline style were added. As a display face, Joker allows the creation of decorative compositions, easily combining a vertical and horizontal arrangement of words. Its characters are easy for filling with images. In line the face creates ornamental effect very appropriate for logotype design. The font is good to set small expressive advertising texts also. Joker type family received the third prize at TypeArt 2001 Cyrillic type design competition in Moscow.

Plywood is based on a long lost American film classic: Franklin Typefounders's Barker Flare from the early 1970s. Plywood is a surprisingly effective mix between the rigid confidence of nineteenth century wood types and the smooth feminine curves of twentieth century art nouveau ideas. With many variations on almost every letter in the alphabet, it's a versatile typeface that can make itself timelessly at home in multiple design environments, with motifs ranging from the strong and western to the crafty and artsy. Plywood's very expanded character set comes in all popular font formats, including a Pro version that takes advantage of OpenType's many character alternating features in supporting programs.

Tola is a modern, reversed-weight, experimental display font with a spirit of the 70s. Looks better in large sizes but in smaller thanks to the thick bottom makes also interesting effect. It’s based on my letter shape experiment. I was drawing one single letter in the hope to find interesting results. I started Tola font with the letter “G” and based on that shape I created the rest of the alphabet. Tola looks good in modern graphics. It contains uppercase, numbers, and some punctuation signs, and is multilingual. Perfect for logos, posters, and social media graphics that need a super superhero with a sentimental touch.

A completely square typeface. And wide. It is all futuristic and fast. Museum Borders and Ornaments is part of a typographical treasure, the Norstedts type collection in Sweden. Type designer Torbjörn Olsson has painstakingly translated the original 34 Ornament matrices in the collection to Open Type. Among them are several of Granjon's arabesques, as well as symbols from both Swedish and Danish typefoundries. The signs were cut in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries.
