ITC Vinyl was designed by J. Keith Moore, who was born in Germany but raised in Colorado. Wilhelm Klingspor Gotisch appeared in 1925 with the Klingspor font foundry in Offenbach, Germany. Designer Rudolf Koch based his work on the Gothic forms of the 14th century and his broken letter font is often seen in advertisements. However, the ornamental letters do not match today’s legibility standards and Wilhelm Klingspor Gotisch is therefore recommended for use in headlines and short texts with a point size of 12 or larger.

Linotype Salamander is a part of the Take Type Library, selected from the contestants of Linotype’s International Digital Type Design Contests of 1994 and 1997. Designed by German artist Michael Struller, the font seems to be composed of strokes and curves jointed together to form characters. Yet Salamander also looks like a handwriting font, in part because of its slight lean to the right. The font contains four basic weights, from regular to demibold, and two particularly heavy double-weights. Max J. Gradl was a German jewelry designer. A Web search today turns up several examples of his work from the turn of the 20th century. He seemed to favor green stones in silver metalwork. Gradl also did advertising work and co-authored a book on architectural design. Most important for our purposes, though, are the incredible hand lettered alphabets and monograms the man left behind. I’ve digitized one of those delightful alphabets and tried to keep it true to the original. Beyond the base character set of letters, numerals and basic punctuation, I had to extrapolate forms that, I hope, hold true to Gradl’s design. Enjoy!

Many of my typefaces like Narziss and Mommie and also NewLibris or Verse are rather feminine. With Motora Sans I wanted to be the opposite. Masculine with a smell of gasoline and sweat. Umkhonto is the Zulu word for SPEAR, the traditional weapon of war that the Zulus used. The sharp points of the letters face upwards and represent the sharp points of the dangerous spears. Monocto is an upright italic, clearly evidenced by the lowercase letters a, e, f, g, i, k, l, v, w, x, y and several capitals. On one hand, the design is inspired by an historical German running hand written with a pen angle of 45°, and on the other, by rational, utilitarian monospace types, similar to those designed for the mechanical typewriter during the Industrial Revolution. As the writing tool touches the paper, a double-square with broken corners is produced, which then, according to ductus, transforms itself into letter components that are either 90°-verticals or 45°-diagonals. The systematic geometry of Monocto offers unexpected design possibilites.

Though Zigarre can easily be categorized a brush script, Jim Rimmer actually drew it using a big marker. Jim’s original face, inspired by inter-war German poster lettering, was a rough one, with the marker’s juicy ink roughing it out all over the place. The smooth version, Zigarre Script, was produced as part of a major update and remastering the design underwent in 2012. Both Zigarre Script and Zigarre Rough come with extended Latin language support, as well as a few built-in stylistic alternates. 20% of this font’s revenues will be donated to a GDC scholarship fund, supporting higher typography education in Canada.

Cajoun is a bold serif face from German designer Hans-Jürgen Ellenberger. The letters sit visually low on their baseline, in part due to their small x-height. Also, the curved portions of the letterforms have an old-style distribution of weight, which pulls the eye downward. This font has a contemporary feel, however, with crisp edges, and some pointy terminals. The typeface also contains old style figures. Cajoun is recommended for use in larger applications, where the eye can get a change to dance along its wide curves. Cajoun was designed in 2002, and is part of the Take Type 5 collection from Linotype GmbH."

The design for Aurelia is based on the forms of Jenson, an Old Style typeface developed by Nicolas Jenson in 1470 which still influences type design today. Zapf gave Aurelia a bit of his own personal style and adapted it to the demands of modern technology. The family of typefaces was originally designed for use with the typesetting machines produced by the German company Dr.-Ing Rudolf Hell GmbH which was later merged with Linotype. The name Aurelia is a nod to the Roman emperor Aurelianus (214–275), who built the Via Aurelia in Italy. Aurelia is a robust and classic font, suitable for both text and headlines.

Linotype Sinah is part of the Take Type Library, selected from the contestants of Linotype’s International Type Design Contests of 1994 and 1997. Designed by the German artist Peter Huschka, Linotype Sinah is a rounded, ornamental font with many strokes ending in teardrop forms. The letters of this wide-running font do not share a common base line. The capital S and the lower case l both drop under it although neither have descenders. Overall, Linotype Sinah has an almost Asian or Indian feel. The font must be used with generous line spacing and is intended exclusively for headlines or shorter texts in point sizes of 12 or larger.
