BILLIARD was born from the numerous sketches André Toet did for the design of a series of postage stamps in 2011. It’s a capital monospaced and ‘fun’ alphabet, based on the classic billiard play with two white and one red ball. Actually snooker and pool were derived from this rather old sport! In Europe it used to be a sport played by elderly people, practiced in traditional bars, including the smell of beer and the at that time prevalent smell of cigarettes and cigars. These days billiard, snooker and pool are quite popular once again with young people. Germania is a Sans font based on classic roman proportions and forms based on my Imperia font. But I added that distinct, rigid, no-nonsense German touch. Based on a popular design of the 50s-60s, Sandcastle JNL has the retro-casual charm of many prints ads of that era. It lends itself well to headlines, price tags, announcements, name plates and just about anything that recreates the mid-century panache.

In August of 2009, I was commissioned by Zoo York, a New York City based skateboard company, to visit Buenos Aires to study and document street typography. As soon as my taxi driver took the bustling street Entre Ríos, it was clear that the city and I were going to be good friends. Many of the independently owned businesses on Entre Ríos are adorned with handmade signage. These signs are painted in a style called Fileteado which is a century-old Argentinian type of lettering and floral ornamentation. Nowadays, Fileteado is still a prominent part of the city’s landscape, coloring the façades of restaurants, bars and coffee shops. Calaveras and Diablitos are two new typefaces that were inspired by Fileteado. Stylistically, the fonts are a return to a rhythmic and playful sensibility reminiscent of Vitrina and Cuba, two fonts that I designed in 1996. Along with dynamism and dance, these new fonts incorporate a rigor and functionality essential to labelling any font a ‘workhorse.’ The names Calaveras and Diablitos, came from the name of a song by the infamous Buenos Aires rock band, Los Fabulosos Cadillacs. —Pablo A. This design is one of the true gems to come out of the 1930s typeface era. Even though the face was originally designed to counter the invasion of European sans-serifs, it remains faithful to the principles found in its creator's poster work. Lucian Bernhard's lettering creation for American Type Founders is to this day a favorite among font connoisseurs worldwide. It has a unique personality. This deluxe version is packed with extras including the original oldstyle figures, alternates, and ligatures. A number of styles and alternate characters have been added to the family such as heavy italics, extra heavy italics, and capital figures. And an easier-to-identify "flagged" figure one and the new euro symbol are now located in each individual style. Bernhard Gothic is also available in the OpenType Std format. Red Tape is three fonts that were designed by sticking letters together with red tape. It makes for a wonderful makeshift set of fonts. And I really enjoyed sticking those letters together. Of course I did it on screen using bits and pieces of scanned red tape.
