Working on The Lab late one night, evil comic book genius Scott Christian Sava realized there was something missing from his graphic experiment! Giambattista Bodoni (1740–1813) was called the King of Printers and the Bodoni font owes its creation in 1767 to his masterful cutting techniques. Predecessors in a similar style were the typefaces of Pierre Simon Fournier (1712–1768) and the Didot family (1689–1836). The Bodoni font distinguishes itself through the strength of its characters and embodies the rational thinking of the Enlightenment. The new typefaces displaced the Old Face and Transitional styles and was the most popular typeface until the mid-19th century. Bodoni’s influence on typography was dominant until the end of the 19th century and, even today, inspires new creations. The Bodoni Classico of Franco Luin displays less stroke contrast than the original and is therefore also appropriate for smaller point sizes.

This time I touched another classic manuscript for my font. The Lindisfarne Gospels is an illuminated manuscript probably produced around the years 715–720 in the monastery at Lindisfarne, off the coast of Northumberland. It’s the work of a monk named Eadfrith. He was a highly trained calligrapher, and he used insular majuscule script in the manuscript. The Brass Family has a lineage that extends into English history. About five hundred years ago a devout, but anonymous Englishman gave glory to the God he worshipped by designing the capital letters and decorations of these two fonts. Originally recorded in The History Of Mediaeval Alphabets And Devices by Henry Shaw (London 1853), they are described by Alexander Nesbitt in his Decorative Alphabets And Initials (Mineola, NY 1959) as “Initials and stop ornaments from brasses in Westminster Abbey.” I wish I could say I remember seeing them when I was there, but that was forty-two years ago and all I remember was seeing the tomb of Edward the Confessor. One definition of “stop” as a noun is a point of punctuation. I have heard people from the British Isles speak of a “full stop” when referring to a period. Some may remember a 19th century form of communication called a telegram being read aloud in an old movie, with the use of the word “stop” to indicate the end of a sentence or fragment. A full dozen of these stop ornaments are provided. They occupy positions 060, 062, 094, 123, 125, 126, 135, 137, 167, 172, 177 & 190. The Brass Family consists of two fonts: Brass and Brass Too. Both fonts have an identical upper case and ornaments, but paired with different lower cases. Although the typefaces from which the lower cases were drawn are both of modern design, both are interpretations of the textura style of blackletter in use in England when the upper case and ornaments were fashioned for the Abbey. Brass is paired with Morris Gothic, which matches the color of the upper case quite well. Brass Too is paired with Wedding Regular, which is distinctly lighter than the upper case. I find it very interesting how each connects differently. The resulting fonts are unusual and most useful for evoking an historic atmosphere.

An unadorned Grotesque with a refreshingly personal touch. If “Grotesque” mainly means “industrial, mechanical, anonymous typeface” to you, Klainy might redefine your image of the genre. Yes, it’s a Grotesque—but with a contemporary look and a lot of personality. Klainy’s apertures are more closed at the top and more open at the bottom, creating an informal rhythm that sets Klainy apart: a confident, optimistic voice with a clean appearance. Use Klainy whenever a basically classic sans-serif typeface with a modern and individual twist is called for. This font family comes in eight weights ranging from Thin to Black, each with a matching italic style. More than 500 glyphs and a bunch of Open Type Features make it a reliable companion for all of your projects. You can fine-tune the flavor of Klainy with Stylistic Alternates such as a one-story a and a two-story g. Their simple construction blends perfectly with the design concept of this typeface. The calligraphic ITC Regallia is, like ITC Samual, a work of Phill Grimshaw. Generous capitals contrast beautifully with reserved lower case letters whose flowing ascenders and descenders create the flow which characterizes this font. ITC Regallia is graceful and almost poetic, its capitals also suited for use as initials. ITC Regallia includes several ligatures and is best used for short and middle length texts in point sizes of 12 and larger.

Nick Belshaw designed Belshaw in 1980 as a nostalgic tribute to Jugendstil mixed with a 1980s feel. Belshaw is a headline font and should not be used with a smaller point size than 12. It is a good font for initials in magazines or on posters as well as for very short texts. It combines well with sans serif fonts. Belshaw gives a strong and lively feel to any text.

Wilhelm Klingspor Gotisch appeared in 1925 with the Klingspor font foundry in Offenbach, Germany. Designer Rudolf Koch based his work on the Gothic forms of the 14th century and his broken letter font is often seen in advertisements. However, the ornamental letters do not match today’s legibility standards and Wilhelm Klingspor Gotisch is therefore recommended for use in headlines and short texts with a point size of 12 or larger.

Steve Jackaman and Ashley Muir. It was our initial intention to develop a suitable lowercase for Les Usherwood's 'Elston' typeface, based on a few characters from an old German typeface called Hermes Grotesque (Woellmer, Berlin). However, the new design quickly took on a life of its own, and we decided to call it ‘Creighton’. Originally released as a four font family, we have now added eight more weights and made the entire family into 'Pro' versions for good measure.

Sixta, a new monoline face with a classical background, has comfortable proportions and a puissant appearance. Although it has plenty of movement and is eventful, its discreet stroke ductus makes it excellent both for text and display. Sixta comes in eight weights, in OpenType format and with extended language support for more than 40 languages. All weights contain proportional lining figures, tabular lining figures, proportional old style figures, lining old style figures, matching currency symbols, fraction- and scientific numerals.

A typeface designed in Rosennano (Tuscany), its Italian, but executed in Amsterdam. Rick Bradley - known for his Fine Hand, Bible Script, Bradley Hand and Calligraphic Ornaments - drew this font from a gravestone in Ashbourne, Derbyshire, dated 1241. The irregularity lends a special charm to this 'English dialect' version of the international Lombardic style, while the ornamental points reflect the mediaeval 'horror vacui', fear of empty spaces where the evil one might creep in with his influences. Perhaps most useful as a display font, but complete with lower case and extras.

Most folks might picture wood type lettering as the fancy styles of the 1880s which so perfectly evoked images of the Old West. Occasionally there is an exception to that rule, as an online image of some vintage wood letters with an Art Deco influence inspired a revival as a digital type face. Wood Lined JNL features a bold alphabet with an engraved line throughout the characters, and is available in both regular and oblique versions.
