Skeletal Wish is a line from one of my favourite Opeth songs: Heir Apparent. The lyrics are pretty veiled and bleak, describing the destruction and downfall of something that once was beautiful. I am worried about what is happening with our planet: the Amazon forest is burning down, our oceans are full of plastic and the earth is warming up. I had to think of this when I created Skeletal Wish and I thought the title was perfect. Skeletal Wish is a heavy and scary halloween font. It comes with blobs, splatter, gore and whatever else you may need for your designs. It won’t help save the Amazon rainforest, nor will it stop the flow of marine plastic, but you could use it to create a protest sign. After all, the change begins with you.

A modern sans serif typeface inspired by the historic geometric’s of the 1920’s, specifically Futura. The design is not a simple pastiche of what went before this is much more than that. It is a close investigation to how Futura inspired other type designs like Avenir and helped push the boundary of what is a modern typeface of its generation. This is a 2023 redesign of Bronzo, originally designed by Rick Valicenti and Mouli Marur in 1991. With this redesign, Bronzo now has 6 new weights, for a total of 9, and 587 more glyphs than it was able to in 1991. Bronzo appears to move forward, yet remain still, via a center stroke that only sticks out on the left, a tense curve that only happens on the right, and a width that sits uncomfortably between square and rectangle. Those three things, combined with a balanced light to dark ratio, are what makes Bronzo appear tense and ready. Bronzo accepts Modernist ideals of minimal, rational construction—but it also adopts luxuriant shapes over Modernism’s sandblasted neutrality. It’s almost an alternate reality, a “what if?” of Modernism. Modernism’s fun, interesting, cute reboot.

During many years I have been exploring the translation from lettering or calligraphy to type design. Lately I have been designing more big sans and serif families plenty of weight. One of the main things about Hopfen is to bring back the german lettering of Bentele, who also inspired my fonts Semilla and Bowling Script, to a more versatile and useful world. Anyone old enough to remember either the radio or television version of “The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet” pictures Ozzie Nelson as the easygoing father figure who never seemed to have a real job – he was always hanging around the house. In truth, the handsome young Ozzie was a bandleader in the 1930s and 1940s and ended up marrying his ‘girl singer’, Harriet Hilliard. A piece of sheet music from 1933 for “You Have Taken My Heart” was one of the songs Nelson featured with his Columbia Broadcasting System Orchestra. The title was hand lettered in what can only be described as a slightly eccentric Art Deco Sans serif. Redrawn and cleaned up to reflect more uniform stroke weights, Bandshell JNL is now available in both regular and oblique versions.

During the Covid pandemic, I noticed that a lot of public figures (politicians, actors, influencers and even kings and princesses) had to apologise for not following the social distance rules, the lockdown rules or the 'stay at home' rules. They threw parties, went on holidays abroad and - in general - made a nuisance of themselves. When I finished this font, I decided to call it Public Figure! Public Figure is quite a neat, handmade font. It doesn't stick to the rules (but does like to keep up appearances), likes to party (but manages to stay safe) and brightens up your work (without being too gaudy). Public Figure comes with two alternate sets for the lower case glyphs (that cycle as you type) and a massive amount of diacritics, including Vietnamese.

Martin, a condensed semi-serif with rounded edges and friendly serifs, shows its charme best in short, pointed sentences, in headlines set in about 20 to 36 p. The playing with serifs in a condensed, very characteristic type design is attractive and the technical skill is convincing. More styles are planned. The idea was to try to apply a given design criteria (also see Volker Schnebel's Marita and Manuel fonts) to every single character. In other words, start with a character and develop all of the others from it. This is quite easy for some characters but extremely difficult for others. This process generates creativity and the characters move away from the initial constructed sketch. Together in a typeface, the individual characters are now all of a piece and character.
