Clab is meant for branding. The initial characters were build in bold and chunky personality, yet the thin strokes and flowy italics gives it a versatile and unique set of family. In 2007-8, Carolyn Puzzovio developed this OpenType typeface: Lagoon which is based on an Armenian model from the Mechitarist monastery, Venice, 1810. This project was supported by a grant from the AHRC (Arts & Humanities Research Council, UK) and won a first prize in the Granshan 08 type design competition. Oſten, Armenian digital types are designed to match the forms of Latin type characters and ‘Latinized’, by uprighting the forms; truncating ascenders and descenders and raising the x-height – but in this case the Latin characters in the OpenType font have been designed to blend in with the traditional Armenian proportions which are based on cursive forms – also incorporating some of the quirky shapes from the original model. Faithfully following the original created difficulties of ‘clashing’ characters, particularly those with long descenders, so the font contains over 100 alternative characters in the Armenian part, which will normally substitute automatically where necessary. The sloping lower case characters and upright capitals are traditional in Armenian – capitals are used less in the Armenian language. Three new characters for the Armenian unicode range are included: the Armenian dram (currency) symbol; the eternity symbol; and the index number symbol. This font which will be one of the first OpenType fonts to incorporate these newly unicoded characters.

Some vintage 1960s-era packaging for dive gear (masks, swim fins, etc.) manufactured by the Voit division of AMF had various merchandise boxes hand-lettered [with some variation of design] in an interesting sans stencil. These packages formed the inspiration of Dive Gear Stencil JNL. Thanks once again to Gene Gable, whom on many occasions has provided Jeff Levine material for type design inspiration.

Play like a child with letter forms, fill the gaps of a stencil with a ballpoint pen and work this to generate a digital type. Régua (Ruler, in Portuguese) is the result of a typographical joke with the upper cases made by Buggy, a Brazilian typographer, in 1998.

Coltan Gea is a Slab Serif typographic family with 6 Weights plus the italic versions all include small capital letters and cryptocurrency symbols. It is a geometric, minimalist typeface, with neo-grotesque modulations and slightly rounded corners. The typeface has alternative letters and numbers, small caps and advanced OpenType functions. The proportions, metrics and kerning I have configured meticulously for a perfect reading in any size. The complete package includes the roman version in VariableFont format.

Each character of Dog Eared began its life as a half-inch wide strip of paper, folded and Scotch-taped into formation, and then scanned and recreated digitally. Dog Eared is distinguished from other folded paper style typefaces by its robustness and versatility: each numeral and upper- and lowercase letter has a stylistic alternate. Dog Eared Striped is a traditional single color font, while Dog Eared Solid is a chromatic variant that can be used for a two-toned effect. Layer and multiply Dog Eared Striped and Dog Eared Solid together to achieve even more color variety.

The refreshingly clear Antiqua Schnebel Slab is a refreshingly clear and strong interpretation of a contemporary Antiqua with subtle contrast and firm serifs, which offer excellent readability at very small size, and, at the same time, provide a lot of expression for use in headlines. The italics, drawn specifically for this purpose, contribute to a harmonious picture, which never loses creative tension, thanks to its aesthetics. The careful addition of ligatures, small caps, and proportional and old-style figures allows for well-proportioned typesetting. The condensed and expanded variants, which also come in 6 weights each, offer plenty of freedom to design with numerous combinations. Schnebel Slab Pro combines especially well with Schnebel Sans Pro.

Danish type designer Jan Maack created this slab FontFont in 2013. The family has 8 weights, ranging from Light to Black (including italics) and is ideally suited for advertising, packaging, logo, and branding as well as web and screen design. FF Marselis Slab provides advanced typographical support with features such as ligatures, alternate characters, case-sensitive forms, fractions, super- and subscript characters, and stylistic alternates. It comes with a complete range of figure set options – oldstyle and lining figures, each in tabular and proportional widths.

Now even more design possibilities with the popular DIN Next. With its technical and neutral character, DIN Next has earned a permanent place in contemporary typography. Now, DIN Next Slab expands the font family further, offering new design potential. Now comes the next step, DIN Next Slab, also produced under the direction of Akira Kobayashi. On a team with Sandra Winter and Tom Grace, Kobayashi is creating the new font variant based on the optimized shapes of DIN Next. The expansion will make the popular font all the more flexible and versatile. Apart from that, the geometric slab serifs underline the technical and formal nature of the font and emphasize a central design element of DIN Next. However, the team did have some challenges to overcome. While it is relatively easy to imagine DIN Next Light with slab serifs, the amount of available space quickly disappears when it comes to the Black styles. Winter explains that many tests and trials were necessary to find a compromise between space, letters and the serif shapes. Experiments with modified contrast in the weight or only one-sided serifs were quickly abandoned. The central, technical and powerful character of the font changed too much. Nevertheless, it was necessary to simplify slightly the shape of some letters, such as the ‘k’ or ‘x’, for example. These changes, first developed in the Black styles, were applied to all weights in order to lend the font a consistent appearance. Like DIN Next, DIN Next Slab also has seven weights, which cover the range from Ultralight to Black, each with matching italic. There are various character sets in all of the styles and the four middle weights have small capitals available. DIN Next Slab harmonizes perfectly with the styles of DIN Next: the basic letterforms and weights are identical. Both versions of the font can work together perfectly, not just in headlines and body text, but also within a text; they complement each other very well as design variations. With the new DIN Next Slab, Monotype expands the DIN Next super family consistently. With DIN Next Slab, you can underscore the technical and formal nature of the understated font not only in headlines, but in texts, as well. In this way, you have new and diverse potential for application, thanks to the way the different styles of DIN Next combine perfectly.
