Inspired by the large American wood type of the Wild West, Richard Yeend created Italienne Std in 2002. Italienne Std is both very condensed and very decorative. It sports heavy, band like serifs, reminiscent of other italienne-style fonts, like Westside. Italienne-style fonts rose in popularity during the early 19th Century, when designers were first beginning to experiment with extreme contrast within letterforms, and across lines of text. Interestingly enough, letterforms with similar designs were just as common during the 1970s as during the 1870s, so you may use Italienne Std for applications ranging from country music concerts to disco parties. The target was to make a useful font while investing nothing more than absolutely indispensable. In the days before the Interstate Highway system, you were likely to encounter a series of signs like this, somewhere in the backwoods between the large and small towns connected by the U.S. Highway system. The fonts in this series are based on the typefaces used on U.S. Highway signs from the 1930s to the 1950s. Included in each font are a sign shield in the backslash position, and a Burma-Shave logo in the section mark position. The Truetype and Opentype versions contain the complete Latin language character set (Unicode 1252) plus Central European (Unicode 1250) languages as well.

Gryffensee is an original design that bears only the most superficial resemblance to Bastard. Gryffensee is a mediaeval spelling of the lake Greifensee near which I grew up. It is pronounced [?gri?f?n?se?], or "GRIEF-un-say" in English approximation. This font is dedicated to Simone.

The Brass Family has a lineage that extends into English history. About five hundred years ago a devout, but anonymous Englishman gave glory to the God he worshipped by designing the capital letters and decorations of these two fonts. Originally recorded in The History Of Mediaeval Alphabets And Devices by Henry Shaw (London 1853), they are described by Alexander Nesbitt in his Decorative Alphabets And Initials (Mineola, NY 1959) as “Initials and stop ornaments from brasses in Westminster Abbey.” I wish I could say I remember seeing them when I was there, but that was forty-two years ago and all I remember was seeing the tomb of Edward the Confessor. One definition of “stop” as a noun is a point of punctuation. I have heard people from the British Isles speak of a “full stop” when referring to a period. Some may remember a 19th century form of communication called a telegram being read aloud in an old movie, with the use of the word “stop” to indicate the end of a sentence or fragment. A full dozen of these stop ornaments are provided. They occupy positions 060, 062, 094, 123, 125, 126, 135, 137, 167, 172, 177 & 190. The Brass Family consists of two fonts: Brass and Brass Too. Both fonts have an identical upper case and ornaments, but paired with different lower cases. Although the typefaces from which the lower cases were drawn are both of modern design, both are interpretations of the textura style of blackletter in use in England when the upper case and ornaments were fashioned for the Abbey. Brass is paired with Morris Gothic, which matches the color of the upper case quite well. Brass Too is paired with Wedding Regular, which is distinctly lighter than the upper case. I find it very interesting how each connects differently. The resulting fonts are unusual and most useful for evoking an historic atmosphere.

The original version of Salloon was what has become Salloon-Wide. It was designed a year or two before 1990. The narrower version, which is now the regular version of the face, was constructed a few years later. There never has been a true lower-case set of letters for these fonts, but the narrower version introduced a second set of caps by removing the side bumps from the letters. Although Salloon may look like an old font, no historic font closely resembles it. Fonts with bold, thick stems such as Salloon invite interior decoration. The five striped versions and the shattered version of the font were produced a year or two after the construction of the narrower Salloon when the arrival of a font distortion program made it easy to cracked and stripe fonts. In 2019 an outline style and two highlighter styles were added to be used in layers with the Salloon-Regular and one highlighter style was added to be used with Salloon-Wide.

Helmswald Post is a handsome Blackletter that's been years in the making. There's a mix of wispy terminals, flamboyant caps, and the use of negative space to create contrast. Elements from High German, Old English, and many other styles make their way into this gorgeous display font. The result is a medieval looking script with cleaner, more modern feel. In addition to European accents Helmswald Post is equipped with Cyrillic, alternates and ligatures. Old world numerals are present by default but may be substituted by accessing the stylistic sets. Drop Caps happen. They started off life as decorated initials way back when in the days of illuminated manuscripts. Then printing came and they became the work of the rubricators and then somewhere soon after printing began, at least by the 1490’s, they were printed directly into the text. This then is a collection of over a hundred glyphs from that closing decade of the Incunabula period. All of them are based on examples found in the works printed by Michael Wenssler in Basel. This font also contains a few useful pointing hands and a set of spacing characters.

The Roman also has a Small Caps font. Combining the three family members is a good starting point for creating a coherent typographical design.
