Brainstroke is a collection of twelve variations on a typeface. This release was supposed to be a much larger set, but due to a medical issue, where I recently suffered a stroke, I am releasing only those that I managed to complete. The name is a reminder to me to take care of my health.

My first font for 2009 was Aerle. It is a new dark sans serif font in my continuing objective of designing book fonts that I can really use. It made a little ripple in the industry, but more than that I found that I loved it with Aramus and Artimas — my latest book font family with the same proportions. In many ways, Aerle is a very different direction for me built on what I have learned on Aramus and other recent developments in my style. The concept came to me while using Bitstream's Mister Earl on a site online—though there is no direct reference. I wanted a more playful heavy sans with a much smaller x-height than I have been using lately, plus taller ascenders. As I was using Aerle, I constantly needed a light and bold version. The new direction I am taking is a result of a decision that my fonts, though I loved the character shapes, produced an even type color that is too dark or a little dense. Aerle was an attempt to get away from that look even though the letterspacing is quite tight. For Aerle Thin I pushed a little further in that direction and increased the letterspacing. The hand-drawn shapes vary a lot, many pushing the boundaries of the normal character. This gives a little looseness and helps the lightness in feel I am looking for. It will be interesting to see where this all goes. Most new type around the world is far too perfect for my taste. While the shapes are exquisite, the feel is not human but digital mechanical. I find myself wanting to draw fonts that feel human — as if a person crafted them. In most ways this is a normal font for me in that it has caps, lowercase, small caps with the appropriate figures for each case. These small caps were very small (x-height as is proper). So Aerle's small caps are a little oversize because they plugged up too bad at x-height size. The bold is halfway between. These size variations seem important and work well in the text. This font has all the OpenType features in the set for 2009. There are several ligatures for your fun and enjoyment: bb gg sh sp st ch ck ff fi fl ffi ffl ffy fj ft tt ty Wh Th and more. Like all of my fonts, there are: caps, lowercase, & small caps; proportional lining figures, proportional oldstyle figures, & small cap figures; plus numerators, denominators, superiors, inferiors, and a complete set of ordinals 1st through infinity. Opinion varies regarding the role of Claude Garamond (ca. 1480–1561) in the development of the Old Face font Garamond. What is accepted is the influence this font had on other typeface developments from the time of its creation to the present. Garamond, or Garamont, is related to the alphabet of Claude Garamond (1480–1561) as well as to the work of Jean Jannon (1580–1635 or 1658), much of which was attributed to Garamond. In comparison to the earlier Italian font forms, Garamond has finer serif and a generally more elegant image. The Garamond of Jean Jannon was introduced at the Paris World’s Fair in 1900 as Original Garamond, whereafter many font foundries began to cast similar types. The famous Stempel Garamond interpretation of the 1920s remains true to the original Garamond font with its typical Old Face characteristics. The bold italic was a modern addition at the end of the 1920s and the small caps provided an alternative to the standard capital letters. In the mid 1980s, a light version was added to Stempel Garamond. Since its appearance, Stempel Garamond has been one of the most frequently used text fonts.

Pill Gothic walks the tightrope between a heads down, hard working, utilitarian sans and something that stands out, saying, "Look at me!" Ant Serif is a font that can be used for advertising, logo creation, webfonts and more. The font comes in two styles, Regular and Italic and has all the characters in the Latin Basic, Additional and Extended scripts. The font's design came from my love of Marvel's Ant-Man and the Wasp logo. The typeface used, which was custom, was of interest for me, so I decided to create it as a font. It's not a perfect font, but I have put work to make sure it looked as decent as possible. Hope you'll enjoy it!

Some time ago, my son asked me to name all Seven Seas. I had to think for a bit, because I can think of more than 7 seas (the North Sea, the Caspian Sea, the South China Sea, the Sea Of Okhotsk, etc.), but apparently these are not part of the BIG Seven. It turns out that even oceans count as ‘seas’. Long story short, I created a font, had to think of my son’s question and named the font Seven Seas. Seven Seas is a hand made serif that comes with swashed alternatives for a lot of glyphs.

This double-wide wonder is based on Oswald Cooper’s original drawings for the typeface Cooper Fullface. ATF rejected this offering because they felt that several of the letterforms, and particularly the numbers, were a little too wacky for the mainstream. By now, you know that such an accusation is a "Please don't throw me in the briar patch" plea to yours truly. So, here, proudly and true to their designer’s original intent, are two versions of a really fun font. Both versions of this font include the complete Unicode 1252 Latin and Unicode 1250 Central European character sets.

Eventyr is danish and means fairytale. You may know the name of the famous danish author, HC Andersen, who was well known for his fairytales. Actually I finished this font while listening to one of his fairytales, and that inspired me to call this font Eventyr. Most fairytales include the number 3 (3 choices, 3 wishes ... etc) but this font has the number 4 - because you have 4 slightly different versions of each letter to choose from. Enough to make your project look magical! Of course, the font has multilingual support, because fairytales are well known all around the world! :) Caps only Fonts.

Pinch Remix is a recreated version of a typeface I made in 2007. The form hasn’t changed at all, but I composed the family by increasing the number of weights and revising the spacing and kerning. At first it was created from randomly drawing an alphabet offhand on paper with a drawing pen. Then I figured that perhaps it had the framework for a typeface. Originally because it was just a memo, I had already thrown in the trash once. Yet something about it caught me, and when I turned to look down at it, I couldn’t throw it away.
