Gina is an unbiased humanist sans. The simple skeleton of the characters and the organic strokes are essential features to the design. It is a typeface that looks to the future while keeping an eye on classic letterforms. If we have a closer look, we will notice there is a tendency towards vertical proportions. Ascenders and descenders are long, making for a light texture in small text sizes. The type family includes 8 weights and 8 italics. There is a clear link between styles, both in the structure and shape of the letterforms. The italic counterpart uses a moderate inclination and some letters adopt characteristics of cursive forms. Besides Latin, the character set of Gina includes Cyrillic and essential features for covering current typographic needs. Gina has a wonderful set of ligatures, which indeed will catch the attention of those who love connected letterforms.

Uranus is a futuristic font inspired by space and extraterrestrial civilizations. The proportions of the letters are wide, the elements of the letters have organic curves, reminiscent of the design of streamlined spaceships. What gives the font a special character is the excessive contrast between the upper element and the crossbar in letters such as A, B, E, F, K, P, R. In these letters, there is a barely noticeable intra-letter gap in the form of a line. Due to this contrast and rounded elements in these letters, a negative space of a triangular shape also turned out. Particular attention should be paid to the broad language support for the font. The classic modernist FS Alvar grew out of a library of pure modular shapes gathered by Fontsmith’s master of the abstract starting point, Mr Phil Garnham. “It was a collection that just had to be explored and brought to life in a typographic voice. “We debated long and hard about this. It was big decision to make a shift away from the typefaces that people knew us for. And we didn’t want to compromise our reputation of well crafted typographic quality”. Who haven't heard the phrase that ‘any past time was better’?. Although I sometimes find this phrase a little too pessimistic (because I try to think that the best is yet to come), it may be true regarding my passion, typography. I'm too young (29) unfortunately, and this means I did not have the pleasure of being contemporary with maybe the man who has influenced my work the most (1). The man that showed that letters are more than just letters to be read. Herb Lubalin (1918-1981), also called sometimes as ‘the rule basher’ (2), smashed the taboos and sacred rules of type design and gave it personality. He rejected the functionalist philosophy of europeans in favor of an eclectic and exuberant style. To him, letters were not merely vessels of form, they were objects of meaning. (3). Nowadays, when looking at his portfolio, who dares to deny that the term ‘typography’ and ‘beauty’ may go hand-in-hand without any problem? Ed Benguiat, one of Herb’s partners, still likes making jokes with the phrase “screw legibility, type should be beautiful” and what I understand of this is not to forget the rules, but to know and break them carefully. In an era of pure eclecticism, we, the lovers of flourishes and swashes, can't do nothing but admire all the legacy that Lubalin, this wonderful type-guru, left. My font Lubaline read as “the line of Lubalin” is my humble tribute to him. Those who know his work, may see the influences easily like in his ‘Beards’ (1976) and ‘The Sound of Music’ (1965) posters; the art-deco forms in many of his amazing logos and practically in all his creations where letters seem to be alive just like you and me. I really hope that the future finds me still learning more and more about type-design and letterforms, and like him, always willing to make innovations in my field: Because letters are not just letters to be read. It all started with a Portuguese soap packaging from the first half of the 20th Century. The 5 uppercase letters that spell NAZARÉ were sufficient to drive the creation of this design. Nazaré fits in a semi-serif category and it has a large contrast. It works outstandingly in display use specially in the bolder weights that have even more contrast. The regular weights have a more moderate contrast and an overall less extravagant design, fitting best in the typographical conventions. this provides a better render in text use. You can use this font in large headlines, logos, posters, book covers, and general display use as well as short strings of text. Nazaré is the name of a small Portuguese fishing village known for its giant waves and peculiar people.
