Sébastien Truchet designed a modular typographic system during his last year in the School of Fine Arts of Besançon. The system is made of a unique grid and 6 modules which are the components to build several typefaces. The most radical is the "2-2". The last one is the "10-12".This is the "2-3". The goal is to use a grid made of 2 modules in width and three in height. This version is the most pertinent minimalist typeface which keeps plasticity and legibility. Big Brush is the result of me seeing Brush Script everywhere around me. Toronto signage is full of Brush Script. My last two trips to the West Coast showed me mostly Brush Script. Brush Script must be the most widely overused North American script font of all time. Don't we all know at least one restaurant or bar with its sign made in Brush Script? And aren't you just sick of the weird F, Q and T of Brush Script? Well, out with the old and in with the new. Big Brush was made as a replacement for Brush Script, and then some. While Brush Script has only the single familiar letters we all know, Big Brush comes in two fonts, so you can keep the design fresh the neat and keep them guessing at the same time. A backstory with a different name Years ago, I was commissioned to take my Lust typeface and produce something unique to use for large format graphics for an event…cool. It needed to be hyper-contrast with a lot of over-the-top details. With a tight turnaround, I looked for primers within my development catalogue to help me, and settled on some early work on a typeface I had drawn called Hedonist. I used those sketches and its conventions to retrofit and build out Lust Hedonist (only to see the project go bust on the client’s end). I intended to go back shortly after the Lust Hedonist release to finalize a retail version of the OG Hedonist, but I never could settle on the look of the 'g' or the numerals, got distracted with other projects, and never picked it back up… until last year. After randomly doodling a fat, flat ‘g’ with an extremely tilted counter axis, I knew immediately how it could be used and that (re)set things in motion. Only problem was, in the process of refining the letterforms I began truly dissecting the pieces, rediscovering all of the recklessness within Hedonist, and decided on fundamentally rewriting the approach to the typeface… literally flaying it to the bone. I’m much, much happier with this finished typeface now, but the name no longer fit the moniker given to the first, adolescent approach—there’s far more audacity and cleverness in these letterforms, tenacious in their resolution now. As a result, the name Courage fit the mettle of this typeface so much more, so I kept it.

My Dizzy Edge font is really not that dizzy! The Bitstream version of Bell Gothic designed by Chauncey H. Griffith in 1938 for telephone directories of the Bell Telephone Company. It is a good sans serif choice for listings, catalogues and directories as its design is very space saving. The weight of the line is moderate and uniform. Being a clear and easy-to-read font, Bell Gothic is popular now for display and magazine advertising. Cyrillic version by Isabella Chaeva was released by ParaType in 1999. Italic styles added in 2009 by the same designer.

Svengali Roman is loosely inspired by a scrap of 1920s newspaper posted in the Typophile font identification forum. The consensus view there favored the view that the specimen showed hand-drawn lettering. Once I set on the concept for this ‘Origami’ inspired font, I used an imaginary strip of folded paper as the basis for each character, the folded effect being realized fully by incorporating an incised line. Of course the folded paper aspect is just a two dimensional illusion but subconsciously, will automatically be interpreted three dimensionally. There are numerous options for creating alternative characters following this logic, as the centuries-old Origami tradition itself illustrates quite clearly, but I wanted to maintain an ordered sense of style and balance throughout the full character set, so avoided any unnecessary flourishes, staying true to the Japanese ethos and spirit.

So I made five rather odd characters for a logo for a friend… Then I thought I'd fill a couple of spare hours expanding it to a single alphabet… And some considerable time later I ended up with a whole font with full punctuation, a bunch of alternates, pretty broad international support and some OpenType features to keep things varied… There are elements of Art Deco, Art Nouveau, Lego, circuit boards and Ceefax, Memphis lamps and lab clamps, hieroglyphs, googly eyes and who knows what else… Intricate, insane, highly irregular, but somehow it hangs together… Throw down a few letters nice and big when the fancy takes you…
