The Latin, or Roman, alphabet was originally adapted from the Etruscan alphabet during the 7th century BC to write Latin. Since then it has had many different forms, and been adapted to write many other languages. According to Roman legend, the Cimmerian Sibyl, Carmenta, created the Latin alphabet by adapting the Greek alphabet used in the Greek colony of Cumae in southern Italy. This was introduced to Latium by Evander, her son. 60 years after the Trojan war. There is no historical evidence to support this story, which comes from the Roman author, Gaius Julius Hyginus (64BC - 17AD). The earliest known inscriptions in the Latin alphabet date from the 6th century BC. It was adapted from the Etruscan alphabet during the 7th century BC. The letters Y and Z were taken from the Greek alphabet to write Greek loan words. Other letters were added from time to time as the Latin alphabet was adapted for other languages.

In 1948, Joseph Struhl pioneered an innovative do-it-yourself sign kit for retail merchants. Die-cut letters and numbers made from flexible sheets of vinyl with the ability to adhere to smooth surfaces by static electricity; his "Magic Master Interchangeable Sign Kits" became a great success. Jeff Levine has paid tribute to this innovative method of in-store advertising with Sign Maker JNL. Because of their die-cut shapes, the design style of the static cling letters have unique characteristics. Kontrast Grotesk represents a contrast in type design based on a different principle. It was inspired by W. A. Dwiggins and his experiments with the stroke variations. Contrast in this typeface is created not only with the influence of the writing tool (the thickness of horizontal strokes in relation to vertical), but by setting the primary and secondary construction strokes of the characters (e.g. glyph “E”). The grotesque types are usually with no or minimal contrast. Having the contrast has created a new and original look of this typeface without compromising the legibility. The fonts are designed for fluent reading on the screen. A little wider proportions are specially welcome with no need for saving a space as it is in printed media. Kontrast Grotesk family consists of five weights, with italics, small caps and italic small caps. Fonts contains a range of opentype features.

In its characteristics Xtra Sans is a combination of modern grotesks/grotesques and traditional calligraphy. Its upright and compact letterforms generate a sturdy effect as in the early 20th century grotesks Nobel, Kabel or Erbar. As a beautiful yet eccentric unconnected script, Milroy Upright SG Regular can be a refreshing alternative to the formal upright scripts seen on so many anniversary and wedding announcements today. This nineteenth century classic was designed by Max Rosenow and Julius Schmol for Barnhart Brothers & Spindler in 1895. Milroy Upright was originally known as Oliphant. It was later renamed Advertisers Upright Script in 1925. This new version, Milroy Upright, contains many new alternative characters including a modified cap X and cap Z, a two-story lowercase g, and a matching set of oldstyle figures. Milroy Upright SG Regular is now available in the OpenType format. Some new characters have been added to this OpenType version including stylistic alternates, discretionary ligatures, and oldstye figures. The tale of Okiku Of The Nine Plates is an old Japanese story full of lust, deceit, murder and revenge. It tells of Okiku, a beautiful servant whose master lusts after her. After she refuses his amorous advances, he accuses her of stealing a costly plate and has her thrown down a well, where she dies. She then turns into an Onryō (a vengeful spirit). Okiku font is a thin, all caps, scratched typeface. Upper and lower case differ and can be interchanged. Okiku comes with an afterlife of diacritics.

Broadside is a versatile, authoritative and functional family inspired by the sans serifs seen on ’40s and ’50s patriotic posters and period advertising. It is available in seven weights across condensed, normal and extended widths, each with reweighed italics. The type from this period was very often hand-drawn, and so differs considerably from poster to poster. Many American examples of this period use a Photo-Lettering style called Murray Hill and its derivatives, although their UK counterparts, designed by such luminaries as Abram Games or Tom Eckersley, are more stylistically diverse. Even though no single model is available to base a digitisation on, there are certain recurring stylistic quirks that give the type its unique flavour, and so the most interesting examples from several sources were be combined for the final family. Alternate short descenders, allowing for tighter line spacing, can be toggled on or off in the Opentype panel of Indesign or Illustrator. Tabular and lining numerals and a single-story ‘a’ are also available in all weights and styles.

Kis Classico™ is named after the Hungarian monk Miklós Kis who traveled to Amsterdam at the end of the seventeenth century to learn the art of printing. Amsterdam was a center of printing and punchcutting, and Kis cut his own type there in about 1685. For centuries, Kis's type was wrongly attributed to Anton Janson, a Dutch punchcutter who worked in Leipzig in the seventeenth century. Most versions of this type still go by the name Janson. In 1993, the Italian/Swedish type designer Franko Luin completed Kis Classico, his own contemporary interpretation of the Kis types. About the Kis/Janson story, Luin says: If you understand Hungarian I recommend you read the monograph, 'Tótfalusi Kis Miklós' by György Haiman, published in 1972 by Magyar Helikon. It has hundreds of reproductions from his Amsterdam period and from the time when he was an established printer in Kolozsvár (today's Cluj in Romania)." Kis Classico has five weights, and is an admirable version of this classic type.
