Some time ago I bought my smallest book ever: Kate Greenaway’s Alphabet* 57 x 72 mm. I thought it was the sweetest little book I had ever seen. Not knowing about the fame of the designer Kate Greenaway (1846-1901), I put it in some dark drawer and looked at it from time to time. Kate’s books were all outstanding successes in English publishing history; she was an icon of the Victorian era. Some of those books are still being reprinted today. This little gem I had accidentally acquired has become very rare and I have not found any reprints yet. So I thought maybe I could adapt her drawings for use on today’s computers. I ventured to redraw her delicate illustrations, blowing them up 300 percent, being forced to simplify them without losing her touch. It took quite some time! While redrawing them, I discovered that she most certainly drew them in at least three different sessions as well. Then I scanned my drawings and put them in a font. To make the font more usable, I added the ten numerals in Kate’s style; the original does not have those. I hope she would have liked my adaptations. Visum means Visa in Dutch. The name was inspired by Dutch soccer club Vitesse's rather sad decision to leave Israeli player Dan Mori behind, after he was refused a UAE visa because of his nationality. Visum font is a tall and proud all caps typeface. It comes with alternates for the lower case letters, some ligatures and an impressive language support. Of course, upper and lower case glyphs can be freely interchanged.

The first inspiration for Missiva was a sixteen century letter from S. Francisco Xavier (St. Francis Xavier) but then I adapted my own handwriting in order to have the basic character set.

At first glance, Else may seem to be similar to many of the Century typefaces, with its prominent figures and sturdy alphabet. But when Robert Norton, of Norton Photosetting Ltd., designed Else in 1982, he added a bit of flair to that basic model. Note the bowl of the g, the splayed legs of the M, the sharply curved G and J, as well as the leading strokes of v and w and both of the graceful ampersands.

AllSmiles is a sunny little face in which all the letters smile at you. It can be used in notes and cards of congratulation or in celebrating good-news announcements. In the update of 2011, emoticons were added in the appropriate unicode slots (unicode 1F601 to 1F640 slots). For the sad version, see BringInTheFrowns, and if you only want to proclaim a little joyfulness, you can temper the feelings with a plain version of the typeface, FebDrei.

A lament is a sad song, and the music of the cowboys of the Old West had their fair share of them. However, a vintage piece of sheet music from the early part of the 20th century with the title "The Dying Cowboy" brought at least one positive trait to its mournful song. The title lettering was drawn in a fashion that emulated lettering made with quick strokes of a paintbrush, and became the inspiration for Cowboy Lament JNL.

OCR B was designed in 1968 by Adrian Frutiger to meet the standards of the European Computer Manufacturer's Association. It was intended for use on products that were to be scanned by electronic devices as well as read by humans. OCR B was made a world standard in 1973, and is more legible to human eyes than most other OCR fonts. Though less appealingly geeky than OCR A, the OCR B version also has a distinctive technical appearance that makes it a hit with graphic designers.

June is a contemporary neo-grotesque sans-serif typeface designed to be highly legible, readable, and usable. German type designer Ingo Preuss created this family between 2014 and 2016. Instance is a new classic built on the foundation of over two centuries of history. With its slightly rough edges, Thumbnail Text works well where lettering is required. Letterforms wiggle a bit here and there but are generally quite uniform. Characters are a bit imprecise - but not showy or bouncy. They appear more adult-looking than childish and are very legible. Tweed is a journey into the 1930s world of hand-lettering. The design looks very much like the personal scribblings of an old-fashioned cartoon animator. Based on the 1922 Klingspor model by German designer Rudolf Koch, this hand-drawn quill roman has an informal and curiously delicate appearance. The typeface was known in Germany as Koch Antiqua and in the rest of Europe as Locarno. Eve, as it was called in the United States, continues to enjoy great popularity in advertising and book publishing circles. Kъnig – the old Bulgar runes The writing kъnig emerged in the places of ancient Thraco-Bulgarian migrations in ante-deluvial times and developed in stages paralleling the other ancient writings. There have been many interactions and loanings between kъnig and these other writings. The root of the word kъnig (OBg: кънигъı) comes from the Old Chinese k'üen 'scroll' (ModCh: 纸卷 zhǐjuǎn) [57]. The word was loaned directly in the Bulgar language (*kün'ig > *küniv) restoring two individual Old Chuvash forms: 1. *k'ün'čьk > кўнчěк kind of ornament on a woman's garment; *k'ün'-gi / *k'ün'-üg > k'ün'iv book, codex, which is evidenced by the Hungarian könyv book and Mordvinian konov paper borrowings; 2. *k'ün'i- > *k'ün'i-gi > к'әn'iγь > кънигъı. This word has been preserved in Sumerian as kunuku (inscription) and kəniga (writing, knowledge). It is inherited from Bulgar to Slavic: книга (Bulgarian and Russian), књига (Serbian, Croatian and Slovenian), kniha (Czech and Slovak), książka (Polish), and non-Slavic: könyv (Hungarian) languages. Kъnig letters (kъni) have been known from archeological finds for more than 100 years already; however, until recently, no attempt has been made to decipher them, find their phonological value, or connect them to their natural successors: the Glagolitic and Cyrillic alphabets. The oldest mention on the Bulgar runes is found in the mid-9th c. AD work On the Letters by the Bulgarian writer Chernorizets Hrabъr. Being already a Christian, he wrote pejoratively about the pagan Bulgars

A 14-weight sans family based on the original British ‘M.O.T.’ (Ministry of Transport) alphabet. A capitals-only, single-weight design was drawn up around 1933 for use on Britain’s road network, and remained in use until Jock Kinnear and Margaret Calvert’s ‘Transport Alphabet’ was introduced for Britain's first motorway in 1958. The identity of the original designer is not preserved; however, Antony Froshaug in a 1963 ‘Design’ magazine article mentions Edward Johnston as an advisor. Speculation that it was based on Johnston’s London Transport alphabet is discussed in archived government documents from 1957: “So far as I am aware, the Ministry alphabet was not based on Johnston’s design; indeed, it has been suggested that Gill got his idea from Johnston. Our alphabet was based on advice from Hubert Llewellyn-Smith (then chairman of the British Institute of Industrial Art) and Mr. J. G. West, a senior architect of H. M. Office of Works.” A 1955-57 revision of the alphabet which polished the somewhat mechanical aspects of the original may be the work of stone carver and typographer David Kindersley. For the digitisation, Rian Hughes added an entirely new lower case, italics and a range of weights. The lower case mimics the forms of the capitals wherever possible, taking cues form Gill and Johnston for letters such as the a and g, with single-tier versions in the italic. A uniquely British font that is now available in a versatile family for modern use.

Irish Penny is based on the lettering from Percy Metcalfe's beautiful and influential pre-decimal coinage of Ireland, the Barnyard Collection. The font is more monoline than is conventional for Irish insular styles, almost giving the feel of a modern soft sans, and perfect for small and large scale display purposes. Irish Penny contains a full complement of Latin Extended-A accented characters, Irish lenited consonants with the dot accent, and the tironian et which is commonly used in Ireland instead of an ampersand. Lowercase characters are provided small caps style, slightly reduced in size and subtly thickened in weight. The licensed font comes with a faux italic, and although obliques are not common among insular typefaces, Irish Penny Italic is a useful smart and sporty extra. Kantor's modular stroke and humanist axis defines it as an old-style 15th century Venetian serif typeface. At the same time, the lowercase Kantor alphabet is relatively compressed and has the vertical stems of a textura blackletter. However, Kantor has distinct, penformed shapes and has also kept all the organic irregularities of traditional handwriting (or punch-cutting, as it were). Kantor is not happy, not sad - but calm and dignified. Perfect for buddhist poems, fantasy video games and antique scrolls to give that "long time ago"-feeling.

Melancholia is a subtle and beautiful sans-serif inspired by calligraphic letterforms. The name describes a feeling of deep sadness, an intense sensitivity to the world. The design of Melancholia is an attempt to introduce some of that wistfulness into the sans-serif form, a typographic classification that is often characterised by an austere functionality. Melancholia includes a set of true italics influenced by old-style serif italics, such as those found in Claude Garamond’s eponymous typeface, as well as a set of stylistic alternates and calligraphic-style swash characters.

Swedish type designers Örjan Nordling and Göran Söderström created this sans FontFont in 2009. The family has 12 weights, ranging from Thin to Black (including italics) and is ideally suited for editorial and publishing, logo, branding and creative industries, poster and billboards, software and gaming as well as web and screen design. FF Dagny provides advanced typographical support with features such as small capitals, case-sensitive forms, fractions, super- and subscript characters, and stylistic alternates. It comes with proportional lining, tabular oldstyle, and tabular lining figures. In 2011, FF Dagny received the ISTD award.

The typeface was designed at the Polygraphmash type design bureau in 1989 by Lyubov Kuznetsova. Based on the typeface Literanutnaya (Latinskaya) of the Berthold typefoundry (St.-Petersburg, 1901), a version of Lateinisch typeface of H. Berthold (Berlin, 1899). For use in text matter.
