Originally designed by Sol Hess for the Lanston Monotype Foundry in 1938, this revival was designed by Ann Pomeroy in the early 90s. Spire is a condensed serif with a very 1930s retro look. I set out to design a contemporary font that is condensed with thick and thin strokes. The highly structured forms of this condensed font was made more interesting and softer by giving it a slightly calligraphic tone and by adding round corners. Atto's express purpose is to be both utilitarian, compact and technical but with a friendly face. The name "atto" was adopted since it refers to the measurement of "smallness" or detail. You will no doubt discover all the many pleasant nuances within Atto. Adopted in 1964, "atto" comes from the Danish "atten", meaning eighteen. Atto - (symbol a) a SI prefix to an unit and means that it is 10 to the power- 18 times this unit. Examples are one attosecond or one attometer/attometre. Atto is available in for Mac and Windows in Postscript, Truetype and Opentype.

The 1912 publication "Essentials of Lettering" has an example of a hand lettered, condensed spurred serif design called "Compressed Roman". This is now available digitally as New Thin Roman JNL in both regular and oblique versions.

The hand lettered title for the 1954 film “Power of the Press” was done in a condensed sans serif type style that is now available digitally in both regular and oblique versions as Local News JNL.

A late-19th Century song book entitled "Gems of Scotland - A Beautiful Collection of Scottish Songs" had the words "Gems of Scotland" hand lettered in an ornate, condensed type style now reproduced digitally as Gemstone JNL.

I really wanted to make my own condensed typeface for memes and such. I think i have succeeded. This typeface is so average looking that no one would suspect that it is in fact very radical.

A 1930s print ad for Miller Tires featured lettering in a condensed slab serif design. This provided a design model for the digital typeface Automotive Service JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Touch Tone introduces a condensed lowercase and oblique italics to the uppercase font inspired by the "Dr. Strangelove" movie titles – designed by Pablo Ferro. Willow is an Adobe Originals typeface designed in 1990 by Joy Redick for the Adobe Wood Type series. Willow is a condensed typeface modeled on nineteenth-century wood types known as Clarendons (wood type Clarendons do not resemble the English metal types of that name). The Logansport, Indiana Pharos-Observer dated June 12, 1917 had the following headline running across its front page: “American Steamer Sunk by German U Boat”. XAabced evolved gradually as I reworked earlier attempts to do a text face. It is quite condensed, but with fairly long ascenders and descenders. Blending it with JasperSqueeze resulted in JabcdHy, which I prefer to either parent.
