The birth of the monospaced types dates back to the past. There was a need for the creation of typesets for typewriters. The difficulty was to align the different glyphs in the same width. This led to particular problems with letters like "M" and "l"; the former seemed to be squeezed into the same width of all letters and the second one appeared way too stretched. Despite - or perhaps because of - the impression of the typewriter it is still popular with Graphic Designers. The Ingrid Mono font family with a high range of glyphs and symbols has that special appearance.

BetterKamp was originally constructed in 1995-6. It was not constructed to meet any specific purpose but out of curiosity, to see what the result would be if two quite different faces were blended. KampIngriana is the offspring of BetterTypeRight, which has characteristics of a typewriter face without the monospacing, and KampFriendship, which mimics a serifed face drawn by hand. The original blending had many oddities that I did not clean up until 2020 when I also added the semi-bold weights. BetterKamp lacks polish and elegance, but it is very readable at small point sizes.

It could be you’ve never heard of Bergie Seltzer - and neither had I. Basically, Bergie Seltzer is the fizzing sound an iceberg makes when it melts. We are having a bit of a heat wave right now, so I needed to give this font a ‘cool’ name! Bergie Seltzer font is a cool, all caps display font. It has a slightly eroded look (like a melting iceberg if you will) and a laid back attitude. Use it for your summer magazines, your ultra-cool websites and your bottles of fizzy drink! Just don’t melt the polar cap!

Meet the Letterpress! Jakob Erbar’s Phosphor was released by the Ludwig & Mayer Foundry before 1923. The origins of Aurora date back to 1912 (Johannes Wagner Foundry). Permanent Headline was designed by Karlgeorg Hoefer, also known simply as Headline. It was fun making a mix out of the three classics – with Letterpress Bastard you will quickly get astounding results. To complete the family we added a font containing random symbols we also found in the metal type boxes. Pauline Script is a Vintage inspired Monoline script. It's a contemporary script inspired by the past, now available to the Instagram era. Pauline Script is a follow up to the popular Pauline typeface. Pauline was one of my first typefaces, all the way back in 2008. Mimeograph Lettering JNL is based on one of the numerous plastic lettering templates once manufactured by the A.B. Dick Company of Chicago and is available in both regular and oblique versions. The mimeograph utilized a porous drum which inked the backside of a waxed stencil sheet. Unlike traditional stencils which have cut out areas that are directly inked or painted, a mimeo stencil has the area to be printed scratched away by removing the wax coating with a stylus. The resulting image allows the ink from the drum to seep through the sheet and transfer to the blank paper. As with a companion font (Mimeograph Template JNL), the character shapes follow the routed letters of the template, complete with rounded terminals. A previous font release [designed with flat terminals and some alternate characters] is available as Interoffice Memo JNL.

Initially released in 2013 Corbert was a big hit and was named one of the most popular fonts of the year by MyFonts. Following on from its success the design is updated and remastered to meet the latest standards of The Northern Block and to satisfy critical issues put forward by the most demanding of users. A geometric sans serif typeface influenced by Bauhaus and the early modernist era. Precise shapes are optically adjusted to create a clear, natural typeface with excellent legibility. YinYangMessages contains two sets of letters, those on the upper-case keys that fit on the left side of a yin-yang symbol and those on the lower-case keys that fit on the left side of a yin-yang symbol. One can alternate the two sets manually but the OpenType contextual alternatives feature does this automatically in any program that supports this feature. The family contains two fonts. In one the filled half is on the left and in the other the filled half is on the right. The slash and backspace keys contain blank halves of the symbol, which are useful for completing words with an odd number of letters. The two styles can be used in layers. YinYangMessages is a fun and playful family that every once in a while may be the ideal typeface for some unusual situation.

Mamute is a block rockin' family with a cool letterpress look. Its upper- and lower-case slots hold glyphs with slightly different textures for a natural look. Ralph M. Unger, (Arno Drescher), 2006, (1936) Originally, Arabella Pro was designed by Arnold Drescher around 1936/1939. Drescher created this wonderful script for former Germany type foundry Joh. Wagner. The typeface has been redesigned, digitized, completed and expanded as OpenType Pro in the profonts studio.Arabella Pro comes in two versions, light and medium, each with a large selection of manually designed ligatures and alternates, i.e. swashed upper case to make this naturally flowing script design a perfect font for OTF-savvy applications like e.g. InDesign or Quark Xpress 7.Arabella Pro light and medium are perfect partners for any sans serif, especially for Futura. ATF Headline Gothic cries out to be used in headlines, and that is exactly how it was used after it was first created by American Type Founders in 1936 with newspapers in mind. It would be hard to imagine a better typeface for a shocking, front-page headline in a scene from an old black-and-white movie. With its all-caps character set, and its big, bold, condensed design, ATF Headline Gothic is the epitome of its name. “Extra! Extra!” The style of ATF Headline Gothic recalls the bold, condensed gothic display faces of the 19th century, but with more refinement in its details than many large types of the time (typically wood type). Its most recognizable trait is the restrained, high-waisted M, with short diagonal strokes that end with their point well above the baseline; this avoids the sometimes cramped look of a bold condensed M with a deep “V” in the middle, common in many similar headline faces. The digital ATF Headline Gothic comes in a single weight, all caps, like its predecessor, but offers two styles: one crisply drawn, and a “Round” version with softer corners, to suggest a more “printed” feel, reminiscent of wood type. Of course, in either style it includes a full modern character set, including symbols such as the Euro, Ruble, and Rupee, that didn’t exist in 1936.

Tripper is a rock-hard display font family. The six styles – from Light to Black – of this robust stencil typeface will assure your text grabs all the attention it can get. Instead of settings large amount of texts, just use this font for a small amount of words. Or even better: just one word. But most importantly: make it really, really, really big. The lightest weight is pretty condensed, and slowly expands when the weight increases. The bridges – essential to a stencil font – have the same width across all styles, so you can safely apply all styles in the same size without the risk of stencils falling apart.
