An upright typeface family developed to meet the demand for letters to produce pupil material for handwriting as well as for reading. Realgar is a generic and neutral typeface but with enough personality to be different, but not as much to be unfamiliar. The name refers to an ancient natural pigment, known for its vivid orange colour. It is a multipurpose typeface in an eclectic style that combines geometric and grotesque with some humanist touches. Some of its main features are the wide proportions, closed apertures and idiosyncratic numbers that make Realgar stand out. In addition, the rounded dots convey a friendly and contemporary look. A Variable Font version is included with the family or as a separate style.

Linotype Nowe Ateny is part of the Take Type Library, which features the winners of Linotype’s International Digital Type Design Contest from 1994 to 1997. Designed by Dariusz Nowak-Nova, Nowe Ateny is a frantic handwriting font whose capital letters include technical-looking grid lines and end points. These seem to anchor the letters without reducing their volatility. The font consciously lacks elements which increase legibility, sacrificing them for the sake of more design oriented ideals. Nowe Ateny is thus good for headlines in larger point sizes, especially when the look of the text is as important as its content.

Since 2005, I have repeatedly attempted to create a neutral-looking grotesque with a humanistic character. I wanted a pleasant, soft typeface. The typeface should appear similar to Helvetica or Univers, but with more open shapes and therefore better readability. The features are deliberately reserved with 4 gradations plus italics. The onum feature for Old Style Figures contains additional alternative letters such as a looped g. The italics have a swash feature with some decorative shapes. As a sans serif, HGB Bacco does not appear to be technically constructed, but has a friendly, open character and is also suitable for longer texts.

Ida is a simple and utilitarian typeface reminiscent of late 19th/early 20th Century grotesques, yet having a warm and friendly nature. Closed apertures and low contrast combined with elegant skeleton of individual characters create an impression of both rationality and comfort. Technically the font is modern and functional but still calls forth the emotion of a valve radio. Ida comes in 18 styles – 6 roman weights with companion italics and 6 narrow widths. Citrine is a study in curves, based upon word-processing and in-game text. A tall lowercase makes for easy reading, curved joints give it friendliness, and broad spacing delivers distinctive all-caps treatments. Here’s a downloadable PDF specimen. Citrine’s basic idea began as “a Havelock for reading.” Essential geometry delivers a sense of harmony, and forms sit broadly next to each other to be easily read, even onscreen and very small. Citrine includes case-sensitive alternate shapes for smooth all-caps typesetting, small caps, and a wide range of diacritics to cover a multitude of latin-based languages.

Tabarnak started out as an assessment and correction of an old concept by George Wilkens. The original idea was for a bold upright alphabet reminiscent of Oz Cooper’s work, but ornamented with some shocard/signage traits. That idea was radically redrawn and reinvented to become a simple 21st century font made to turn heads and induce a friendly rush. Tabarnouche is Tabarnak’s “jittery” incarnation. Just as great for packaging as they are for ads, posters, book and magazine covers, both Tabarnak and Tabarnouche come with about 600 characters, including tons of alternates, and support for the majority of Latin-based languages.

Calps is a condensed sans serif font. An unfussy design, the font is designed to be consistent across such letters as a, b, d, q, p, g and C, G, O, Q, creating a uniformity for the set. Each corner of the line is carved to decrease its sharpness, adding a touch of friendliness. If the standard font is not sufficiently condensed, there is a slim variation offering narrower proportions. In addition to the slim variation, the font also comes in roman and italic versions in 9 weights, offering a total of 36 variations for the font.

POLIGRA is an experimental typefamily and a homage to traditional printing of the pre-war era in Poland. Most of the typefaces based on traditional printing are either clean, geometric typefaces or completely distressed lettering. The POLIGRA project explored everything in between. The letters, cleaned up, redesigned where necessary, and defined in their entirety, have a friendly and warm character, as if taken out of the press. The selection of typefaces was based on theater and sports posters. All of them have blocky and geometric character, each of them is an all-caps typeface. The POLIGRA family includes 13 typefaces.

Mohr Rounded—the new version of the original Mohr typeface—features curved and softer terminals which make the font look more organic, warm and friendly. The Mohr Rounded family comes in three versions: normal, alt and italic, each with 9 weights, from Thin to Heavy, resulting in a total of 27 styles. TyfoonScript is the handwritten relative of TyfoonSans. With its slightly rough contours it has a lot of personality and good legibility when used in small sizes. It consists of 719 glyphs, has multiple language support and comes in 3 weights. Stylistic alternates, ligatures and contextual alternatives contribute to an authentic handwritten appearance. Fractions, old-style and tabular figures are also included. Suitable for blocks of text as well as quotes, remarks, statements or a personal friendly emphasis. TyfoonScript and TyfoonSans share the same metrics and blend together perfectly. They can be used in the same text frame without adjustments to leading or size.

In the early days of PostScript fonts, I designed a font of leaves called XLeafMeAlone. In 2006 I decided to revisit this topic and the result was two sets of new leaf fonts: MapleOaks and MoreLeaves. MapleOaks contains almost 100 images of maple, oak, and sycamore leaves, and MoreLeaves has almost 100 images of leaves of various other species. There are four MapleOak fonts. They have identical images; only the orientation of the images is different. In MapleOaksUR the tips of the leaves point to the upper right, in MapleOaksDR the tips point down to the right, etc.

Urbane Rounded is a curved, friendly version of Urbane, a versatile all-purpose sans-serif family of six weights plus italics. It explores the same idea-space as early geometric modernist sans such as Futura, Erbar, Spartan and Elegant Sans, with a single-story a, a contemporary high x-height and very slightly condensed bowls. Tautier is a display font based on the specimen of Enge Mediaeval-Antigua, published in 1900 from the Bauer Type Foundry. It is intentionally redrawn to keep its overall narrow proportions. Based on the existing basic alphabets, Tautier is redrawn to appear more classical and friendly, as you can notice in the rounded corners around the beaks, as well as the lachrymal terminals in lowercases. Tautier is a display typeface suitable for large applications, for example, headlines for editorial design, branding, webpages, and environmental design. It currently comes as a single-styled typeface disposed to extend with an italic version.
