An early 20th-Century French lettering book displayed at an online image sharing site stood out with a hand-lettered version of a classic Victorian font. The lettering - a spur serif top and a split serif (or "Western-style") bottom is the basis for Jeff Levine's Les Folies JNL. All of the nuances and idiosyncracies of hand-lettering are left intact.

An Art Deco “thick and thin” novelty type design based on the hexagon shape was found within the pages of “La Lettre Dans le Decor & La Publicite Modernes” - a 1930s-era French alphabet collection. The title somewhat translates to “The Letter in Modern Decor and Advertising”). Named Oh Hex JNL, it is now available in both regular and oblique versions.

Quantour is a geometric monospaced display sans typeface which has a distinct style and is inspired by the Mid-Century Modern era. The Quantour name is a combination of the Latin 'quantum' meaning "unit of something" and the French 'tour' which means "to turn". Quantour is recommended for luxury brands, logos, fashion, cinema, architecture, invitations, display work, posters and headings.

Arcadian was first produced in wood type around 1870 by William H. Page & Company. It is a semi-ornamented face based on a French Clarendon, with dots added to the median and the tops and bottoms of the letters. It has a distinctly “Old West” feel, and was likely used to add a little pizzazz to advertising and broadsides of the time.

Howdy is a modern French Clarendon revival typeface inspired by late 19th-century woodblock type and sign painting. Its ties to the American West evoke a distinctive western and retro flair. It was designed with flexibility in mind. Intended for use as a display type, its reverse contrast forms make an impact from tall or wide headlines and anything in between.

A hand-rendered advertisement for a leather tanner, appearing in a French book from the ’40s, served as inspiration for MVB Bovine. Using its comic sway and slightly exaggerated forms, the typeface delivers bold headlines with a wink and a smile. MVB Bovine is all-caps with a set of discretionary ligatures. The 1905 Barnhart Brothers & Spindler catalog featured an ultrawide face called "French Antique Extended". The letterforms have been faithfully rendered here, but this font’s kerning calls for a lot of overlapping and interlocking that the original cast-metal face wouldn't have been able to duplicate. Both versions of the font include 1252 Latin, 1250 CE (with localization for Romanian and Moldovan).

Sometimes different combinations of possible looks are attributed to a same person. This new virtual image finds itself soon in thousands of archives and data bases. To increase security and help track criminals, unknown death (Mr. Smith) or lost and kidnapped people, government asks citizen to help search those people. "Mr. J. Smith" is a font family consisting of 4 portrait-fonts and one letter-fonts. The portrait font "Mr. J. Smith" is a portrait-construction-kit. By layering the fonts "Head", "Eye", "Nose", "Mouth" one over the other, you can design over 7 million different faces. Bold, muscular, vaguely oriental, Wedge Gothic ML is the original name of this font released by Barnhart Bros. and Spindler of Chicago in 1893. The straight-forward, no-nonsense name tells us exactly what to expect: sans-serif letterforms based on wedge-shaped vertical strokes. The typeface was dropped for awhile -- it does not appear in the 1907 catalog for example -- but reappeared in 1925 as Japanette. What is the opposite of "straight-forward" anyway? According to McGrew, Wedge Gothic was originally created for the Chicago Herald newspaper. The designer is unknown. A distinctive display face, useful when a strong and unusual statement is desired. Perigord has mixed origins. It was inspired by Gutenberg’s capitals and by lettering developed by German designer Ernst Bentele, but its calligraphic antecedents go back to French initials of the Carolingian period. The result of this is a formal, attractive and antique look which we hope you'll like. The full version includes alternate forms for many of the letters, as well as numbers and punctuation.

This set of initial letters was inspired from French renaissance decorated letters. Unfortunately, we don't know where they were in use, or who was the punchcutter, our models were coming from a late XIXth century copy. Note: The letters I and J, U and V are not different. It is not a mistake, but it is the exact reflection of what was customary during the period.

Mark van Bronkhorst’s MVB Sacre Bleu was inspired by an example of French handwriting from the 1930s. With a goal to keep the script as authentic as possible, the font includes a number of ligatures to avoid letterform repetition. Framboisier means ‘Rasberry Bush’ in French. Even though it’s early spring, I already spotted raspberries at the greengrocers, so I figured a nice raspberry-related name would suit this font just fine. Framboisier is a hand painted script font. It’s a little messy, a little shaky, but legible and cute as well. Comes with all the diacritics and a whole bunch of alternate glyphs.

This font was inspired by the hand-written 1648 Munster peace treatise signed by French King Louis XIV and German emperor Ferdinand II.
