A comprehensive and faithful rendition of one of the finest metal typefaces of the 20th century. Rudolf Koch designed Wilhelm Klingspor Schrift (initially conceived as “Missal Schrift”, and later referred to also as “Wilhelm Klingspor Gotisch”) between 1919 and 1925 for the Gebr. Klingspor Type Foundry in Offenbach am Main. It is an impressive textura typeface, being sharp, elegant, spiky, sensitive and noble at the same time. Some of its most notable features have to do with the delicate decorations, the thin but subtly swelling lines that parallel or bridge strokes in the capitals, the hairline endings that terminate each stroke in both the capitals and the lowercase letters, the subtle joining of hairlines to thicker strokes, and the tension of some of the transitional curves. Koch’s original design included two sets of capitals (normal and condensed); alternates for a, d, e, r, s and z, plus long s; short and long flourished finial forms for f and t; thirty-five ligatures; and eighteen decorative pieces (Zierstücke). All of these features, plus several additional ones for modern use (including the usual standard characters for typesetting in modern Western languages, additional alternates and ligatures, plus carefully coded Opentype features), have been thoroughly implemented to the highest and most lively level of detail in the present font, in the hope that the past greatness of Wilhelm Klingspor Schrift will finally step into the modern OpenType realm. The main sources used during the font design process were several pages from a specimen book issued by the Gebr. Klingspor Type Foundry in 1927. Other sources were as follows: Bain, P., and Shaw, P. (Eds.) (1998), Blackletter: Type and National Identity, New York: Princeton Architectural Press (p. 43); Hendlmeier, W. ITC Greengate is the result of a time-traveling, intercontinental collaboration--one between 21st century South African designer Richard Every, and early 20th century Scottish artist Jessie Marion King. Jessie Marion King (1875-1949) began her professional career as a book designer and illustrator, but over time her creativity found its outlet in many forms, including posters, jewelry, ceramics, wallpaper, fabrics, murals, interior design and costumes. After eventually settling in Kirkcudbright, Scotland, she founded Green Gate Close, a center for women artists. Although her style is reminiscent of the Art Nouveau artist, Aubrey Beardsley, King's aesthetic was an offshoot of the “Glasgow Style,” a Scottish hybrid of the Arts and Crafts movement and Art Nouveau. Often, her illustrations included hand lettering. It was just this kind of lettering that gave Richard Every his inspiration for ITC Greengate. When he saw some children's book illustrations that King created in 1898, he knew on the spot he had to complete the hand lettering as a typographic font. He began working on the typeface in 1996, but it took six years to be released as an ITC typeface. Every simplified and harmonized King's letterforms slightly and, most importantly, added a suite of lowercase characters. The result is a somewhat earthy Art Nouveau design, with a character quite distinct from typical digital revivals. Every's career has been as diverse as King's. He was born in Durban, South Africa and studied graphic design at ML Sultan Technikon in Durban. He's been an art director, freelance designer, the owner and manager of a nightclub and co-manager of a South African band. “Through it all,” he says, “typography has always been one of my passions.”

Mark van Bronkhorst designed MVB Celestia Antiqua at a time when font choice was limited. Design was characterized by overuse of the few fonts that came with laser printers. A rustic typeface, recalling the roughness and irregularity of pre-digital printing, was a response to the cold crispness of DTP. MVB Celestia Antiqua holds its own among a large group of other “weathered” serif fonts, in part due to the size of the family: three weights, small caps, italics, and two titling styles. But it's also successful because it's simply drawn well, the contours only as rough as they need to be, enabling text at any size, large or small.

Journeyman is an all caps layered display typeface in the sign painter tradition. It has normal width caps in lowercase position and a wider caps in uppercase position. Letters in lowercase position are slightly more rounded than those in uppercase position thus providing two styles. Journeyman supports languages with latin characters and ligatures as well as Greek and Cyrillic. The normal front layer is Line while Silhouette is usually put at the back for a three dimensional effect. Other layer arrangements are possible. The type works well for shop displays, poster work, menus, signage and other purposes where you want the type to have impact.

Birmingham New Street is the latest updated development of a typeface family inspired by the hand lettered title on a 19th century railway map. The map, prepared by the London and North Western Railway was headed "Birmingham and environs". New Street, meanwhile is the great 19th century commercial road linking the city centre of Birmingham with the train station of the same name. So, in a spirit of 19th century enterprise, we present "Birmingham New Street", a fun family of three display faces, laden with open type features and late Victorian charm, ideal for posters, book covers and any other high flown design you might have in mind.

Spotlight was created by British designer Tony Geddes in the tradition of the bold serif fonts of early 19th century England. It too is a robust alphabet exhibiting extreme stroke contrasts, however, Geddes gave his font a more relaxed feel by not filling in the strokes completely. Long white rays break up the otherwise dark black strokes, following the form of the outer contours and giving the figures a three dimensional look. Spotlight is also reminiscent of the decorative advertisements of the 1930s and of the glamorous revues and shows of this time. Spotlight is perfect for headlines and display in larger point sizes.

Buinton Rough is roughed up version of Buinton. There are three versions with increasing distress level. Buinton Rough is a script typeface with noble and vintage looks. It has serifs at the beginnings of the strokes, swash capitals and formal design. Buinton Rough has lots of alternate characters, swashes and ligatures. It has also a bunch of tails with different shapes and widths to give the vintage logotype or sports look to your design. These alternates makes Buinton Rough very versatile. Linotype CoolWool is part of the Take Type Library, featuring winners of Linotype’s International Digital Type Design Contest. This font was designed by A. Leonardi and P. Wollein, who took their inspiration from clothing labels and care instructions. CoolWool is designed to look like it was stitched, a style of typeface which goes back to the hand embroidery of the time of Biedermeier. CoolWool, however, is a distinctly modern font with a technical feel. The font is not suited for longer texts, but CoolWool is good for shorter texts and headlines, especially because of the possibilities allowed by its three different styles, regular, stone washed (bold) and Cotton Club (outline).

Steamtown is a sans serif type family of three weights and four styles. It is based on geometric forms, so it is a clear and straightforward typeface. It has an industrial feel and also resembles street signage. It has four styles; Clean, Rough, Print and Press. The Rough style has rough edges, Print has a subtle texture and Press has a heavy letter-press texture. Rough, Print and Press styles have two sets of upper- and lowercases. You can manually alternate the two sets of upper- and lowercases or you can enable the Contextual Alternates OpenType feature to automatically cycle these two sets of letters.

To design Mr Black, we used old ('70-'80) dry transfer lettering sheets that were used by my grandfather who was a military cartographer. We had only two almost used-up sheets. The letters didn't transfer so well but we liked the way they were damaged. All of the characters have a very high resolution so they can be used in a large scale. Mr Black doesn't have lowercases but has up to three alternate uppercase for each letter. Checkout Mr Tiger if your looking for lowercase letters with the same distortion effect. “It looks like it could have been designed last year,” says Toshi Omagari, the lead designer for The Wolpe Collection, about the original Tempest typeface. My family and I recently bought a fixer-upper farm from the 1930 and I have been renovating and building for the last three+ months. I have a lot on my mind (as you can imagine), so I write little notes to keep track of what I need to do. Of course, since I’m often in the middle of something that needs to be done NOW, these notes are kind of messy.
