DBXL Nightfever was originally designed by Donald Beekman in 2001 for the disco-techno-house record label of the same name, an imprint of United Recordings. Geometric and gridded, with a solid sci-fi techno feel, Nightfever still contains a lot of soul. Three additional wider weights were added for more design flexibility, as well as italics for all widths. After the record label was terminated the Nightfever fonts were used for many other DBXL design projects. It was put online for free download first in 2008, this year (2019) the design got more refined with additional accurate kerning and spacing. All fresh and new, ready for a new space age!

My family and I recently moved to a ‘fixer upper’ farm from the 1930’s. It came with a slightly run down barn, 4000 square metres of land and a LOT of redcurrant bushes. I can’t really say that I am overly fond of them. I find them a bit too tart. As a kid, I used to smother them in sugar, but I can’t do that any longer, since I am a responsible dad… ;-) Redcurrant is a slightly wonky, slightly crazy handmade font. It can be used for book covers or post cards, but feel free to use it for whatever. Comes with cute little swashes as well.

Bodoni Campanile Pro is a font that bridges the gap between a “fat” and a compressed traditional serif typeface. It was originally designed in 1936 by Robert H. Middleton for Ludlow. International TypeFounders exclusively licensed the family from the Ludlow Collection, and Steve Jackaman (ITF) produced a digital version in 1998. Jackaman completely redrew the font for its 2017 release. Bodoni Campanile Pro, much like its transitional status as a font, is successful in both formal and casual roles. Adso was born out of a research that studied the possibility of reintroducing Gothic writing in our contemporary world. Inspired by Textura, Adso was decidedly freed of all those little details that make Blackletter faces appear foreign or even displeasing to the contemporary reader’s eyes. Nevertheless, the basic features of Gothic color were preserved: verticality, modularity, and darkness. Adso is a gothic font for today’s age, highly readable and open to all fields of expression.

The font, Arnold Boecklin, appeared in 1904 with the font foundry Otto Weisert. Traces of the floral forms of the Jugendstil can still be seen in this typeface. Alphabets of this type were mainly meant for larger point sizes, as on posters. A sheet music edition of an early 1900s song entitled "You Taught Me How to Love You, Now Teach Me to Forget" was hand lettered in a free-form Art Nouveau style that combined varying line widths and character shapes. This unrestricted style of lettering was popularly embraced and revived by the hippie counterculture of the mid-1960s through the mid-1970s through their rock concert posters, record album covers and tee shirt graphics. A Colporteur is a peddler of books, newspapers, and similar literature. When I was young, we often got visits from colporteurs - mostly they wanted to sell us a very expensive encyclopedia. I haven’t seen them for a while - the internet probably killed their trade, as there are numerous free encyclopedias out there. So I made Smithens Villa Script, sort of classic decorative with a modern twist. Do It Yourself JNL was modeled after self-adhesive vinyl letters and numbers manufactured by Duro Art Industries of Chicago - formerly the Duro Decal Company. The hand-drawn look of the original lettering was retained by Jeff Levine to stay true to the design, and the rectangles that border each glyph represent the pieces of self-adhesive vinyl onto which the characters were silk screened.
