The font family Univers? is one of the greatest typographic achievements of the second half of the 20th century. The family has the advantage of having a variety of weights and styles, which, even when combined, give an impression of steadiness and homogeneity. The clear, objective forms of Univers make this a legible font suitable for almost any typographic need. In 1954 the French type foundry Deberny & Peignot wanted to add a linear sans serif type in several weights to the range of the Lumitype fonts. Adrian Frutiger, the foundry's art director, suggested refraining from adapting an existing alphabet. He wanted to instead make a new font that would, above all, be suitable for the typesetting of longer texts - quite an exciting challenge for a sans-serif font at that time. Starting with his old sketches from his student days at the School for the Applied Arts in Zurich, he created the Univers type family. In 1957, the family was released by Deberny & Piegnot, and afterwards, it was produced by Linotype. The Deberny & Peignot type library was acquired in 1972 by Haas, and the Haas'sche Schriftgiesserei (Haas Type Foundry) was folded into the D. Stempel AG/Linotype collection in 1985/1989. Adrian Frutiger continues to do design work with Linotype right up to the present day. In 1997, Frutiger and the design staff at Linotype completed a large joint project of completely re-designing and updating the Univers family. The result: Univers Next - available with 59 weights and 4 Linotype Univers Typewriter weights. With its sturdy, clean forms Univers can facilitate an expression of cool elegance and rational competence. Univers has the uncanny ability to combine well with fonts of many different styles and origins: Old style fonts such as: Janson Text, Meridien, Sabon, Wilke. This is a free abridged edition of the full-featured Gutenberg B and Gutenberg C fonts. Although (as the name suggests) it was originally conceived as the first release in the B42-type series, it actually represents the colophon to this series. In addition to having a narrower scope, the font differs from its full-featured predecesors in both letter and word spacing, as well as in glyph design, using exclusively straight lines for every glyph and providing a significantly rough appearance at medium to large point sizes. The font includes the usual standard characters for typesetting modern texts, as well as a few special characters, alternates and ligatures that can be used for typesetting nearly as in Johann Gutenberg’s 42-line Bible and later incunabula. Bristol and Bristol Adornado (also known as Greco) was first released by Fundición Richard Gans of Madrid, Spain, in 1925. The Richard Gans Foundry is a defunct Spanish foundry which existed from 1888-1975. Throughout its existence, types were designed by a number of people including José Ausejo Matute (d. 1998), Antonio Bilbao (who created Escorial in 1960), the son Ricardo Gans, and Carl Winkow. GroupType's versions of this font pair have been with FontHaus since the mid 1990s. Bristol is a charming and strong period design. Its structure is masculine and vertical. Minigap is a geometric sans serif family that has a minimal height difference between upper and lower case. In other words for those who are into typography, it has a very high x-height. The choice was made to finally have a typeface that could appear very neat, reducing ascending and descending parts of the glyphs (b, d, g, j, l, ...) that could interfere with the lines above and below. All of that without going to extremes in a unicase style but also without renouncing to a great legibility. This aesthetic, in fact, translates into a pleasant visual effect that creates well-defined lines and enhances the layout, looking excellent also on small screens. The pointed corners of capital letters and numbers have been kept even in the heavier styles, to give consistency to the family. Stylistic alternates are included: “i” and “j” can be set to the x-height, to have a more common aesthetic; by default they are set in the lower version, fitting better the purpose of this typeface. the two-story “a” is also available, to give you one more customizable option and extend the range of use. I saw a cool UT-Ligature on an old (maybe 70's or 80's) Texas Longhorns fan-shirt - it was in 3D and I wanted something like that with my own initials A and B to print it on a baseball hat. I started drawing it and when I was finished, I thought it might be nice to do the same for my officemates. I needed another G, T and K. After finishing that I thought it might be cool to do this for other people as well. Since the source of all the 3D glyphs is found in the regular ones which get moved by a 45 degree angle and then connected with lines , I first draw all the uppercase regular glyphs. The thing that followed was kind of an addiction: after finishing the uppercase letters, I wanted to add lowercase letters, after finishing the 3D letters, I thought it would be nice to have a fill version to layer with the 3D letters. Having a rough, woodcut version of the regular style would be cool, too. And the font is also pretty much suited to make a stencil version. When all this was done, I was interested on how the font would look like without the serifs and curves instead of the 45 degree angles, so I did the Longhorn Sans. Good to use for all sports-related designs, especially retro-style soccer/football shirts. Uppercase characters can be combined to form ligatures or logotypes.
