Isabel was made out of necessity to create a new font for children and teenagers, that could be enough friendly and versatile for text in words or even easy-to- read long texts. The purpose of Isabel is to combine all the nice and friendly features of the simple letters that the teachers teach to the pupils at primary school, as they starting to learn to read, together with the normal editorial fonts we read every day. In this way it generates a very joyful serif font, or even friendly font, with some conservative aspects. Tsotsi, a recent addition to the Scholtz Fonts range, is highly legible, strong, African and contemporary in design. It is a sans serif font, however, the gently splayed terminals to the strokes subtly hint at a serif. It has been designed to be easy on the eye and readable at all font sizes and can be used either as a body (text) font or in headings and larger scale design. The font has an irreverent insouciance which is suggested by the verticals which all vary from true perpendicular by a few degrees, and by the slightly top-heavy nature of all characters - hence the name "Tsotsi" -- a rascal who is very sure of himself (and a little big-headed). Above all, however, the Tsotsi (both the font and the person) has an appealingly cheeky and mischievous style. It includes characters for English, French, Italian, German, and Portugese. all upper and lower case letters, all special characters as well as all numerals and punctuation. The numerals are mono-spaced so that they will line up correctly in columns of figures. The letters of the alphabet are correctly kerned so that they appear correctly in text.

Zoran Kostik began designing the Just Square font family in 1999, based on a logo that his son, an art student, had designed. The design project grew until Kostic had designed eight weights, for both the Latin and the Cyrillic writing systems. Just Square is a very geometric and constricted face best used in experimental designs (i.e., logos, web sites, flyers, and expressive headlines).

1920s-era sheet music for "Tangos Pour Manon" from Brussels, Belgium had the title hand lettered in an unusual style. I have actually never had a sherbet. When I made this font family, I wish I had one, as it was a whopping 38 degrees (Celsius, not Fahrenheit…) outside. Lumina combines a fluid, informal look with an upright, fairly formal character structure. The font is reminiscent of leaded or stained glass, suggesting a trying to-be-solid outline with flowing inner spaces. Characters are softened by the use of staggered heights and slightly irregular widths, creating the impression of hand-crafted, ink-drawn shapes. Lumina is unusual in that it gives a medieval treatment to a modern character outline. The outline has been given an irregular, slightly hand-crafted look that is at variance with its modern character and hints at both the informality of a grunge font and the carefully hand-drawn quality of medieval illuminated scripts (hence its name). It is one of the few informal, compressed fonts that retains a high degree of legibility. Use it when you want your text to be both relaxed and readable, and yet take up very little space on the page. As as a computer programmer, it is my job to stare at screens of text all day. As soon as I learned the mechanics of font design, I boldly set out to design a typeface from my own handwriting that I could use to make my life easier. First, it had to have very distinctive numerals (trust me, it can be easy to mistake an 8 for a 3 in code), it had to have huge punctuation characters (even Perl code like '[lN*1lK[d2%Sa2/d0' looks good in Debug), and it had to be a bit friendlier than Courier (so that I don't give up hope when my code won't compile). I had so much fun designing it that I decided to give it strange lower-case 'i's and 'm's as a bonus. I also spent far too much time hinting it so that it would look as nice as possible at low resolutions.

Porcupine Pickle - a weird font with a weird name. It is loose, it is girly, it is fun. It has an uneven baseline, yet is very easy to read. It comes with all the accents. Yay!
