Beauchef is a sans serif typeface originally created to meet the needs of Centro de Modelamiento Matemático de la Universidad de Chile (University of Chile Center for Mathematical Modeling). Beauchef is a typeface with rough strokes that features subtle optical compensation and does not strictly follow the laws of perception. This typeface might not be too cheerful, but shows a very particular idiosyncrasy of form. Beauchef is as tough as advanced mathematics; however, it is as legible and exact as numbers themselves. This is an avant-garde typeface that resembles the development of mathematics, but at the same time it is as conservative, calm and respectful as clients who require its services. ITC Cyberkugel is the work of British designer Timothy Donaldson, who occasionally likes to write with an extra-fine ballpoint pen. I like the spindly scrawny forms that it gives me when I follow all the usual 'italic' writing conventions", he says. And there lie the origins of ITC Cyberkugel, although the creative process was moved from pen and paper to software and a Wacom tablet. "I like the fact that people will be buying it to give them a 'human', 'organic', 'non-digital' look, and yet no ink has soiled paper. Although the movements of the hand are still the essence, the whole thing was created in cyberspace." The name comes from combining cyberspace and Kugelschreiber, the German word for ballpoint pen. The work of these humble printers and poet-singers of northeastern Brazil strongly served as source for acclaimed romances and movies and still inspires writers of all genres, movie makers, painters,​ musicians. In the early 1960s, the German Master Printers’ Association requested that a new typeface be designed and produced in identical form on both Linotype and Monotype machines so that text and technical composition would match. Walter Cunz at Stempel responded by commissioning Jan Tschichold to design a new version of Claude Garamond’s serene and classical Roman. Its bold, and particularly its italic styles are limited by the requirements of Linotype casting machines, forcing the character widths of a given letter to match between styles, giving the italic its characteristic narrow f. The family’s name is taken from Jacques Sabon, who introduced Garamond’s Romans to Frankfurt. Sabon has long been a favorite of typographers for setting book text, due to its smooth texture, and in large part because Tschichold’s book typography remains world famous.

Tetria was designed by Martin Jagodzinski, who says that the font came from the need for a compact, constructivist typeface. Milescut is a display typeface inspired by some seminal covers the graphic designer and photographer Reid Miles created for the Blue Note Records between the 1950s and 1960s. Miles made almost 500 covers for Blue Note in this period, including some using the hand-cut technique that consists basically in doing vertical cuts in capital letters and numerals to create a unique style within the universe he created for Blue Note. Milescut is a tribute to this small “cut” 😬 in his trajectory within the greatest record label of all time. Many decades back, churches, schools and other buildings with a need to display an outdoor message often chose a sign making system utilizing characters silk screened onto metal pieces in a block chamfer style. Each piece had a crimp in the top of the metal which formed a hook to fit over the existing rails of a message panel. This allowed for a finished sign to be displayed within minutes, and a quick change of information was not very time-consuming. A popular version of these signs provided white letters and numbers on black backgrounds. This was the model for Announcement Board JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions. There are two different width blank panels on the broken and solid bars for those who wish to kern the letters tight to form a ribbon, however they were designed to have slight spacing in order to emulate the hand assembly of those vintage sign panels.

Plumage is somewhat unusual in that it has elements of calligraphy as well as script in a semi-loose form that gives it a pleasing appearance for both large and small sizes, and interesting flare finish strokes add to its unique character. As I read a dictionary description of "plumage", I realized that in many ways there is a parallel between a bird's plumage and how it is utilized in the context of writing: Plumage varies in pattern and arrangement for different purposes; what it expresses can of course be even more interesting. Plumage is disposable after a season, as new ones become available... imagine, a self-sustaining quill! - I guess that's equivalent to a refill or disposable pen. Historically, quill pens were made from feathers of a variety of birds, each chosen for its special characteristics. The sturdiest and most reliable feathers, however, come from turkeys, swans and geese. Feathers used to make pens are the stiff-spined flight feathers on the leading edge of the bird's wing. Pens for right-handed writers come from the left wing, and pens for left-handers, from the right! Each bird yields 10-12 good quills, and sometimes only 2 or 3 - so small a yield that the geese reared in England could not furnish nearly enough for local demand, and quills were imported from the Continent in large quantities. At one point St Petersburg in Russia was sending 27 million quills a year to the UK. It is said that geese were specially bred by US President Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826) to supply his own vast need for quills - in his lifetime he wrote almost 20,000 letters. The name "Plumage" was selected to pay homage to the noble birds that supplied countless quills for centuries of literary works. Bigfoot is the fattest font ever made. It began as a simple exercise given to students in a design course: Most people don't appreciate type because they don't really know what it actually is. One way to understand it is looking at it like a combination of sculptures that have to work together to achieve a certain harmony, where each letter form is one of those sculptures. Most people understand and appreciate that a sculpture starts from a rock of an incomprehensible form, which is manipulated by someone into becoming the recognizable or abstract work of art it eventually is. Consider type design a kind of two-dimensional sculpting. You have a rectangle. Take away as a little as possible from it until it is recognizable as the letter A. Repeat to get the letter B, and so on. After all 26 minimal letters are made, do they actually function as an alphabet to build words and sentences that are recognizable to the human eye? This exercise can trigger thoughts and theories about the overall subjective nature of identifying abstract yet somewhat familiar shapes. It can go into the psyche of art in general. But one thing for certain, this exercise has so far helped a few people find a new appreciation for finely crafted typefaces. If you are a design educator, your students' typographical perspective and arguments would benefit from it. And if you are a designer, well, fat faces are all the rage these days, and this is as fat as it can get. Please note that that this typeface, due to its minimalistic nature, does not include accented characters. It does however support the full C0 Controls and Basic Latin Unicode set.
