Rever is an experimental typeface by a young designer Sasha Smirnov. It clearly alludes to 19th century typefaces with reverse contrast, but still the character shapes are as simple and geometric as possible. Rever answers the question “What can a reverse-contrast typeface look like today?” Its set of styles is non-traditional: in addition to a regular one, there are also an oblique (slanted to the left, not to the right!) and a stencil styles. The typeface can work for typographic experiments of any kind -- web, print or motion design. The font was released by Paratype in 2019.

I found this type specimen on the statue of Jan Hus in Prague’s Old Town Square. The statue was designed in 1903 by Ladislav Saloun, and its writing is the cutest Nouveau font I've ever seen. Filling in the blanks, I realized the need for a standard lower case because the caps are so wild. The result is a very type-able and dynamic Nouveau. AndrewAndreas is a simple, clean, sans-serif font family that is highly legible and useful for both text and display purposes. The original three weights were designed in 1994 and three additional weights plus oblique styles were added in 2020. Also added were several OpenType features, including subscripts, superscripts, and fractions. The six oblique styles slant the upright styles but do not change the shape of the letters. However, three OpenType stylistic alternatives provide alternative letter forms for a, f, i, j, and l for five of the obliques and they can be used for a more traditional italics appearance.

The titles struck me as handsome -- the titles and captions and place labels on a page I have of Henri Abraham Chatelain's Atlas Historique. I'd already modeled Antiquarian Scribe after the neat, slanted penmanship used in the body text of Chatelain's famous old world atlas; now I felt compelled to digitize this legible roman handlettering, as well. The letterforms are strong and handsome. They've got a certain deft, organic character. A personality. I can't fully explain it. But this antique alphabet seems suitable for many applications. ITC Arid was designed by Rob Leuschke in 1997 as a lively calligraphy typeface which looks as though it was put to paper with a piece of charcoal. Generous capitals mix harmoniously with the more reserved lower case characters and the forward slant of both create a dynamic impression. Arid should be used in point sizes of 12 and larger and is well-suited for headlines and short to middle-length texts.

Hauser Script is a freely drawn brush script typeface, which was designed in 1936 by George Hauser for Ludlow. Hauser took advantage of the slanting matrices of the Ludlow machine to create what is possibly the most informal of American brush scripts. Steve Jackaman of International TypeFounders, Inc. (ITF) digitally engineered the typeface in 1998. Hauser Script has a graceful, calligraphic look that brings class to any project at display and subhead sizes.

During a visit to London in 2008 I fell in love with the square font used on the British car number plates. I was immediately inspired to start working on this font and have been developing it intermittently ever since. Several more trips to London and the project evolved before it finally took off and became Shentox. Despite the starting point being inspired by simple, everyday car plates, the font soon evolved into something fine and very rich in detail. Even though the square genre is very restrictive, Shentox is a highly legible contemporary font with a full range of weights, useable not only as a display family for headlines and posters, but as a distinct, clean font family for branding and general editorial use (Especially magazines). It has been carefully drawn paying extra attention to the details, high end finishes that makes Shentox a safe font for use in large scale work. For example, the curves of every individual corner have been adjusted character by character to avoid the common problems encountered with square fonts (Eg. darker corners between weights or a visually inconsistent radius between the Upper and Lowercases as a result of copy/paste). Shentox italic, which has a 12 degree slant, has been corrected to avoid distortion when slanted. The radius of the upper-right and lower-left corners are more pronounced, giving it a more fluid Italic feel. ITC Drycut is the work of Vancouver-based designer Serge Pichii and gives a twist to the tradition of heavy, woodcut-like typefaces. The font includes all the realistic features of a true woodcut, sharp edges, white cut marks and black slivers. The slivers around the edges suggest traces left after awkward movements of a knife, which are often visible on old woodcuts...Folk artists often didn't care much about refining their carvings and the slivers would have been left as long as the letters remained readable." In a specimen book from Stevens, Shanks & Sons, Ltd. of London (circa1930s) “Royal Gothic” was their version of a classic grotesk sans that had been in use as far back as 1899 when the Keystone Foundry called it “Charter Oak”. The terms "gothic" and "grotesk" were equally applied to early sans serif typefaces – at first not well embraced by printers as being too ugly (grotesque) for use. One familiar characteristic of early grotesk fonts (such as this one) is the numerous variations of character widths and shapes. By combining those two terms into a font name, the digital version of this design is called Gothic Grotesk JNL, and is available in both regular and oblique versions.

This is the display version of Librum. Librum means “book” in Latin, which I thought was appropriate. Bream is Latin for proclaim—appropriate for display work. The fonts are very close to Librum-Book and Librum-Italic, with the same OpenType features. The glyphs are modified a bit to make them a little more elegant, but that’s not very noticeable. Mainly, the letterspacing and kerning is tighter and more carefully fit to large point sizes. As for classification, I like oldstyle, Venetian, geralde, English oldstyle. There’s discrete modulation, slanted crossbars, full brackets serifs of medium thickness and sharp cut ends.
