Unearthed by our friend Dimitris Karaiskos in an antique shop in Vienna, we digitized it and added more glyphs. Blitzplakat is the name of this pre-Letraset system, where you could make your own little advertising posters by cutting out these letters and sticking them on paper like stamps.

DESCRIPTION With Skill I wanted to create something wild. Something that splashed the letters with life. To do this, I knew I'd have to break the barrier between analog and digital, so I took my best brush and started to play. Throughout the years as a type-designer I've met and become fan of many calligraphers. My belief that only a good calligrapher can make good typography (1) has become even stronger. I'm now absolutely sure that only practice improves the skill, especially in this field. So, with this in mind, I started a font which was a challenge for me because sometimes the gap between paper and screen can be gigantic. Skill is another of my attemps (2) to capture the spirit of the pointed brush, its expressiveness, the passions and fears of the artist. This font is about freedom. Freedom everywhere. Movement, velocity, passion. To achieve this, many alternates and ligatures per glyph were designed. Use it on magazines, posters, book covers, music albums, t-shirts, skates, tattoos. NOTES (1) This is mostly referred to script fonts, though text fonts made by designers with a deep calligraphic background have at least to me, an extra charm. (2) See my fonts Live and Indie. TIPS Thanks to Open-Type, the font gives the user the chance to play and get many wonderful results: In example, using the font with “discretionary ligatures” activated will give more life to the written word. Some letters will jump of the base, while others will ligate or not with the following (typical of gestural calligraphy). Adobe Illustrator is recommended. STYLES Skill is the most complete style. It has all the alternates and ligatures that can be seen in the posters and more! Skill Standard is a variant with no decorative glyphs. Pomarosa is a typographic family that consists of capital roman letters and twisted lower case letters set randomly. Each one of them is characterized by its multiple calibers and widths. Pomarosa was planned to accompany graphic works done with different techniques and materials such as hand made collages. The narrowness of its glyphs involve its audience with abstract imprecision. Its spirit was born between fabric snippets intervened with pencil and painting. Its three members work in group and also in words or phrases with a non-finished look. Regular Pomarosa and Standard Pomarosa have 260 glyphs each. Both of them simulate to have been done by a right-handed person that works with its left hand. Cell is a sturdy, geometric typeface with many potential applications. Though it is best suited to display sizes, its construction is simple enough for use in smaller settings. Its octagonal, almost mechanical design is softened by rounded corners. The face is characterized by a single thick stroke in each letter, lending it a unique appearance. It also features an oblique counterpart with several italic-style glyphs. Both members of the family also include small capitals mapped to the Private Use Area. Cell was designed to be at once simple and unique. Its grid-based structure is enhanced by slight adjustments for optical consistency. Teip, designed by Alex Jacque in 2014, is a layerable geometric typeface system. Teip developed as a typographic exploration of overlapping tape where a over/under, foreground/background interplay would be a stylistic motif throughout. For the most part, the uppercase characters have a vertical stress in the foreground, while lowercase have the horizontal stressed in the foreground. Because this is a unicase typeface, upper and lower case glyphs can be mixed for a more random feel in the shape of individual words and the flow of sentences. Besley Clarendon ML is our version of the Clarendon registered by Robert Besley and the Fann Street Foundry in 1845. Besley Clarendon ML represents a significant change from the slab-serif Antiques & Egyptians that had become so popular in the prior three decades. Like Caslon’s Ionic of 1844, it brackets the serifs and strongly differentiates between the thick and thin strokes. Besley Clarendon is also what today is considered a condensed face, as a comparison to the various contemporary Clarendons will show. Robert Besley’s Clarendon was so popular that many foundries quickly copied it, a fact that caused him to complain vigorously. The reason it was so widely copied is simple ó it was extremely useful. It provided the attention-getting boldness to highlight a word or phrase, yet at the same time was compact and easier to read than the fat faces and antiques of the period. It wasn't until sixty years later that the concept of a typeface family of different weights was developed with DeVinne and Cheltenham.
