A couple of years ago, I walked the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage trail in Japan. At the start of the walk, I stayed in a nice guesthouse in Tanabe city, which lies in Wakayama prefecture. I wouldn’t mention all of this, if it didn’t have something to do with the font name: Wakayama prefecture is THE mandarin orange (Mikan) growing area of Japan and the owner of the guesthouse had just picked a bagful of mikan, which he shared with me. So, I had to think of that when I made this font. Mikan is a nice, rounded family of fonts. Both styles come with alternative a’s (and accented a’s), which some people prefer for Children’s books.

Cumhuriyet means “the form of government in which the nation holds the sovereignty and uses it through deputies elected for certain periods”. The reason why I gave this name to the font is that 2023 is the centennial anniversary of the Republic of Turkey, which was founded by Atatürk. The Shad is the almost illegible cousin of the >> Chiq. As the name suggests - it consists of the shadows of the letters. And the bolder the font style, the stronger it is. The “Light” only has a thin shadow, while the “Black” casts a very deep, broad shadow. Shad only consists of the letter shadows, the corresponding letter remains transparent, i.e. without filling. The “metrics”, i.e. the spacing and character widths, correspond to those of Chiq, so that both fonts can be placed congruently on top of each other. When you combine and play with the two fonts, very attractive effects quickly emerge. Shad brings a bit of 3D into typography.

Mixta is a contemporary serif typeface with characteristic and defined features. This font was inspired by the idea of mixing different types of terminals in order to give the font a singular appearance. Its design is composed of diverse styles such as Didone and contemporary faces. You can create unique designs by combining any of the upright weights with matching italics. Syracuse is a font inspired by the typefaces of the "Arts & Crafts" designers of the early 20th Century. As such, it has a distinct "hand" look. In "Syracuse" you will find hints of Dard Hunter's work at the Roycrofters in East Aurora, New York, a little of the Art Nouveau style of 1900 Vienna, even a touch of Charles Rennie Mackintosh's design ideas in Glasgow, Scotland. The font was named for the city in New York where Gustav Stickley produced his Craftsman furniture. Syracuse owes a debt to all of these sources yet is original and different from any other "Arts & Crafts" font available.

Linotype Schachtelhalm is part of the Take Type Library, chosen from the entries of the Linotype-sponsored International Digital Type Design Contests of 1994 and 1997. The inspiration of German designer Ilka Kwiatkowski is not hard to figure out and the font carries the German name of the plant which was its model. The alphabet consists exclusively of capital letters with clear geometric basic forms. The font is meant for headlines in point sizes of 18 and larger. The details which make Linotype Schachtelhalm unique and true to its inspiration are however best seen in large point sizes, such as on posters, and Schachtelhalm is best combined with neutral fonts.

Rigel was inspired by one poster by American artist and illustrator Katherine Milhous. It was a poster promoting the Ephrata Cloister in 1936. The letters from the Ephrata title on this poster are very concise and expressive, reminiscent of blackletter, but have a simplified look, which looks quite fresh even today. It was very inspiring to bring this font to life. In the process of redrawing and redesigning, the font has been slightly modified, but retained the character of those six letters from the reference poster. This is a header font consisting only of uppercase letters. It contains 6 styles from Light to ExtraBold. Despite the fact that the font has the character of blackletter, due to simplified forms, increased contrast and sharp lines, the font looks like a modern rethinking of Gothic script and it has found a new life. The name Rigel is taken for a reason. Rigel is a star, an blue supergiant in the constellation of Orion, and the Ancient Egyptians associated Rigel with the Sah - king of stars and patron of the dead. The human body after mummification was also seen as the embodiment of the soul. Of course, there is no direct connection between the font and Egyptian mythology, but indirectly in this way I wanted to emphasize even more the idea of incarnation, rebirth. Rigel is good for posters, large headlines, logos and any other large font compositions.

One of those magazines turned out to be about fashion. When I opened it on a random page, I saw beautiful pictures. But you know what the first thing that catches my eye? The font! The font in which the headline or quote is written. After you read it, you look at everything else. And I wondered what my font would be in this case. Mechanized JNL is a solid interpretation of Jeff Levine's stencil font Trencher JNL. Both fonts were based on a photo of hand-cut stencils found on a 1940's trenching machine in the collection of the Marine Corps Mechanized Museum at Camp Pendleton, California. Thanks to restoration volunteer Brian Platzer for providing the images of those stencils.

Hierra is a reinterpretation or redraw letter design of a font that appears in the collection of fonts of Dan X. Solo. Strong German flavor this is a letter of rough edges and a special blackness that recalls ancient typefaces Art & Crafts.
