In a World War II training film from the U.S. Signal Corps, the opening title card saying “First Aid” was hand lettered in an extra bold, Art Deco inline style. Those two words (with seven available letters) used as a work model has inspired Film Reel JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Birch Beer JNL comes from lettering spotted on a European business sign found in some stock footage that was used for an old black and white film about World War II. The name is derived from a popular root beer-like soda sold by the Royal Castle Restaurants that were popular in Florida from the 1930s through the 1970s.

In the days when sheet music was as popular as phonograph records for home entertainment, a song album was a folio of collected works. The hand-lettering on the 1940s-era cover for "The Sigmund Romberg Song Album, Book II" served as the model for Song Album JNL. Romberg was a noted composer of Broadway show tunes.

Friedrichsfeld was a Parade ground of the preussen troops and get the name of the King Friedrich II (the old Fritz). Today there is a Preussen Museum near Friedrichsfeld in Wesel. Palatino is the work of Hermann Zapf and became available in the late 1950s from D. Stempel AG in Frankfurt am Main. Zapf optimized Palatino’s design for legibility, producing a typeface which remained legible even on the inferior paper of the post World War II period. Zapf named the font after Giambattista Palatino, a master of scripts from the time of Leonardo da Vinci. Palatino is an Old Face font which proves that classic forms can still be used to create new typefaces.

THE NORWEGIAN RUNES The oldest runes discovered in Norway date from 400 AD. They were based upon the 24 - rune Elder Futhark of Germanic origin. Two of the runes in the Elder Futhark, Pertra and Eoh, have never been found in any Norwegian rune text. From 550 AD to 700 AD there was a transition period between the older 24-rune Futhark and the newer 16-rune Futharks. By the end of this period, the 24-rune Futhark went completely out of use and the 16-rune Futharks had prevailed. Then, about 900 AD, the Shorttwiggs-runes were introduced from Sweden. Shortly thereafter, from 1000 AD, Futharks with more than 16 runes became more prevalent, as these were more consistent with the Latin alphabet. These types of runes were used in Norway up to 1800 AD.

ArchiLogo is not a regular outline-font. It has a stencil element to it and it’s a kind of indirect, because the font is basically the space between the lines. You have to read between the lines, so to speak. It’s like one of the key elements in architecture: the space between the walls. Here’s where type design meets architecture! The new version, ArchiLogo 3.0, has been improved slightly and 13 glyphs have been added to a total of 85 characters. It is still a free font. Because of the popularity of this font I decided to introduce ArchiLogo Pro. Indeed, the pro version of ArchiLogo. Besides the basic Macintosh Character Set the supported languages are Latin 1, Latin 2: Eastern Europe, Turkish, Windows Baltic. It grew to over 300 glyphs.

I’d been thinking for a while about making a serif font with ball terminals: big fun round ends to the letters anywhere I can squeeze them in. So I made Breakfast Pastry! I started with a hand-drawn set of basic letters, then went hog-wild making alternates and ligatures galore with fun swirls, curls, and even more balls! I’ve cleaned the letters up significantly to make them smooth and easy for any cutting or printing you may want to do, but I’ve also left in some of the hand-drawn character so that the letters are warmer and not too formal. Then I took the first font, and made a second solid version without the cutouts. After that I thought: I tend to make plumper fonts ... why not make an even thinner version? So I did! All three versions have the same character set (over 700 glyphs total), which means they all have the same extras and alternates. All three fonts have over 300 extended Latin characters for language support, as well as over 200 bonus items: alternate letters, letters with swashes, two-letter ligatures, small caps, catchwords, and even some bonus ornaments and elements to make the fonts even more flexible. (After all, if one swash on a letter is good, two or three might be great!)

JP2 has some special roots being inspired by the actual handwriting of Pope John Paul II. Franciszek Otto took this source material and transformed it into a high quality font. The result is a rough, but intelligent, design with letters that slightly bounce along the baseline to mimic typical writing. Frederic W. Goudy (1865-1947) created over 100 typefaces during his lifetime. Like most type designers, he is known principally to most people only through his eponymously titled faces such as Goudy Modern, Goudy Old Style etc. This set includes one of Goudy's rarest Arts & Crafts styled faces, a font known as Aries. Mystical Woods is a script and caps font duo. I went back to the basics for this one -- ink and a brush on paper. I cleaned up the letters enough so that there are no jagged edges, but left enough of the character to keep that inky look -- those are the Rough fonts. Then I went back through again and cleaned the heck out of them, making every line and curve smooth for our cut-crafting friends -- those are the Smooth fonts. Since these two fonts were written together with the same tools and style, you can also mix the script letters in with the caps letters! Each font comes with a full set of standard characters and punctuation, as well as over 300 extended Latin characters for language support. And the script fonts also have 45 double-letter ligatures!
