Solantra is a solidly crafted handwritten script. I’ve long felt that beautiful writing is more pleasing to the eye than the more attention grabbing swashes and flourishes. That being said, both have their role in design and Solantra has a large slice of each. Solantra combines vintage style handwriting with all its quirks and English Roundhand of that same era. The result is a solid setting script filled with charm and personality. With default Adobe Illustrator settings for Ligatures and Contextual Alternates active, the vintage charm is in full display. Want to add more flair? There are loads of more embellished letters inside the full version. Solantro takes into account how scripts are actually written so that connections from letter to letter are more fluid and rhythmic than the average script font. In natural script/handwriting most letters end at the bottom right and move up to connect with the next. Some letters like o, v, and w, however; end at the top right. Rather than force these letters to dip down and go back up they should ideally connect from that upper right point. This is accomplished through a series of alternate letters and ligatures with extensive contextual feature programming. So, for example, you might get one version of a ligature in the middle of a word and a different one at the beginning or end of that word. Solantra also takes into account another often overlooked feature of natural handwriting. When you write you inevitably pick your pen up from the paper at times. This is often just to reposition the hand, but in the days of writing with dip pens this was also needed to attain a fresh supply of ink. Having these occasional breaks in connections makes the writing less static and more rhythmic. While the Basic versions are limited to a standard character set and several ligatures and alternates for better settings of text, the full pro versions contains 1292 glyphs and an abundance of features. Even with numbers there are options like Oldstyle numbers, fractions, and ordinals. Central European language support is included as well as some select ligatures that use accents. Edison, is it Victorian or is it Art Nouveau? While this typeface may be found in Petzendorfer’s Treasury of Art Nouveau Alphabets, I believe the decorative spirals are more Victorian than “New Art.” To me, they looked tacked on, rather than organic -- with the industrial mechanics of a coiled spring, rather than the tendrils of a growing plant as the philosophical wellspring. Originally released by ATF in 1894 as Houghton, this typeface was re-released shortly thereafter by Bauer and Berthold in Germany as EDISON. Please do not make the mistake of thinking the font we offer here is no better than freeware fonts in cheap rip-off collections. This font has a set 218 characters and represents many hours manipulating the bezier curves to produce acceptable results. Available freeware fonts are often little more than raw scans with little accuracy of letterform. The muddy line intersections are a dead give-away. Frequently all you get is the alphabet itself. Paradox Runa is based on the futhark, norse elder runes. “Missing” characters has been replaced with either other “real” runes, or “new” ones have been “invented” so that the font hold all characters for the latin alphabet (A-Z + swedish Å Ä & Ö) + “Numbers” 0-9. I do not claim that this rune alphabet is totally authentic nor correct! All upper and lower-case letters are the same except for the letter S. “Ligatures” have been created for the th, ng and eo sounds. These are accessed by writing TH, NG and EO (in upper case letters). As with any attempt at a new typeface, you want to create something different. A difficult task as most legible fonts are based on something previous. Somatype isn't actually based on any particular font but it has unavoidable similarities to others. The important difference here being the distinctive quirk of the connection points going opposite to the norm; exemplified best by the lower case d & e. Once devised, the unique characteristic was applied wherever possible, keeping the rest of the characters in a sympathetic, rounded style. I first designed this in the light weight version, seeing it working best as a large open display font for magazines etc. but realized it would be too light for body copy at small scale, so, medium and bold weights were created to resolve that issue. Incidentally, the word ‘somatype’ literally means body-type.

Anbar is an Arabetic typeface design with visually connected glyphs, named after the historical Iraqi province Anbar, which is traditionally believed to be the birthplace of the earliest Arabic script, Jazm. It follows the guidelines of the Mutamathil Taqlidi type style with one glyph for every basic Arabic Unicode character or letter, as defined in Unicode Standards, and one additional final form glyph for each Arabic letter that can connect with other letters from both sides in traditional cursive Arabic strings. Hela is a high contrast rounded font with interpolation twist. I have a personal saying that fits this font: So long you drive around nice lettering, until you digitize it. Hela comes from lettering of an old Czech textile company called Helana, which does not exist anymore, but the signage is still on the building. Up until the late 1920s, it was a popular habit in American songwriting to use African Americans as the topic of compositions using denigrating themes, words and even exaggerated character illustrations on the covers of the published sheet music. One such example of what was considered "entertainment" for its time was a piece entitled "Little Black Me". While this now socially and morally unacceptable piece of forgettable tripe is collected by some only for the historical documentation of the times they reflected, one good "positive" came out of this negative chapter of our country's musical heritage: The beautiful floral ornamented letters in the song's title has yielded Fancy Free JNL. Originally hand-lettered on an arc, these spurred Roman letters have been re-drawn, and are offered in both the regular design and a companion version with the ornamentation removed for lettering that is less ornate.

The conclusion of a story that began in Type@Paris program in June, 2015 & ended at February, 2020.
