I've had an interest in typography ever since my college days, even submitting my NDD thesis on the subject. The basic concept for this typeface stems from that early creative period, hence the obvious 60’s retro feel. It’s only recently that I've have had the chance to carry through fully some of my dormant typographic ideas, but ‘better late than never’ as they say! The font’s characteristic style is based on repeating or rotating templates of a half and a quarter circle, the geometric, modular building blocks used here. The name was simply influenced by the letter ‘u’, which visually describes a stylized ‘tulip’ flower.

I have always liked Scandinavian folklore, although I have to admit that I didn’t know about the Fossegrim. Fossegrim is a fiddle or harp playing water sprite - usually friendly, but he has been known to lure children and women in deep water with his music. Fossegrim font is a little bit weird as well: I made it using a broken bamboo satay skewer and Chinese ink. It comes with extensive language support and a set of alternates for the lower case letters.

I really don’t like candy. In fact, I even hate the smell of candy! But… You can wake me up for caramel in any form or shape! When I was a kid, we used to get a tin of wrapped English ‘quality’ toffees for Christmas. My favourites were the big, flat chewy caramels in a bright purple wrapper! I came across a photo of Al Capone and some of his henchmen when searching the internet for something completely unrelated. We don’t have a history of notorious gangsters in Holland, so I was intrigued by Capone all of my life. Packing Heat is 1930’s slang for ‘carrying a gun’, which I thought befitted this handmade font with an early 20th century look. Packing Heat comes with multilingual support and a set of alternates for the lower case glyphs.

Yesterday, however, the sky turned a sinister greyish green and it spewed out an an enormous amount of hailstones the size of walnuts. Leaden Skies is a handmade, all caps display font. Kaffemoster is a Swedish slang word for a lady, usually a bit older, who likes to drink coffee and gossip while she’s drinking it. I have decided to study a bit of Swedish, so I downloaded an app and I am practising my Swedish vocabulary every night! Det går långsamt, men jag klarar det! Kaffemoster is a nice, handmade pencil font. It comes with extensive language support (including Swedish) and a nice set of alternates for the lower case letters. The Superior Marking Equipment Company was originally located in Chicago, Illinois and over the years produced a line of both commercial and toy rubber stamp printing sets which were used for making signs, posters, tickets and other printed items. Rough Print JNL reproduces the scanned images printed from one of the toy rubber stamp sets. The sample characters were smaller than one half inch in height and were further reduced during scanning. This gives the end result of a typeface which looks like rubber stamp imprints at small sizes, and very angular, distorted, somewhat grunge type when printed at larger sizes. There is a limited character set consisting of alphabet, numerals, some punctuation and currency symbols. No kerning was added to keep the hand-made appeal. Rough Print JNL is an all caps font with the letters and numbers jogged randomly on both the caps and lower case keystrokes. For a similar design with lower case, Amateur Printer JNL is recommended.

The “Trixy Toy Educator” was a 1930s-era set of letters and numbers (along with a few animal shapes) for teaching children, and was manufactured by the Durrel Company of Gardner, Massachusetts. Die cut from thick cardboard, the 40 piece set also included a rack to display the characters, presumably for little ones to practice the correct order of the alphabet and basic numerals or to spell simple words like ‘dog’ or ‘cat’. Whomever came up with the idea, they used the most rudimentary and unusual ‘type design’ shapes in the A-Z and 0-9, but they were just odd enough to inspire a digital type version of them. School Age JNL is available in both regular and oblique versions.

The term starboard derives from the Old English steorbord, meaning the side on which the ship is steered. Before the steering wheel, boats were steered by an oar at the stern of the ship. Since most sailors were right handed, this is where you would find your steering oar! Starboard font is a rough, handmade, brushy kinda font. It was, of coarse, made with my favourite cheep brush and Chinese ink - resulting in a slightly eroded looking font. Starboard comes with all the trimmings, including double letter ligatures for the lower case.
