This clean looking (all caps) font has characters made of gaps, which form the stencil divisions, spaced evenly along the strokes. The letterforms have a well-proportioned constructional appearance. The characters look like they have been built from interlocking bricks, the stencil gaps give them both rhythm and texture. The sans serif typeface also has a sense of movement because of the way the stencil gaps follow the horizontal, vertical or curved direction of the stroke.

Elicit Script is a hybrid script family, that can be as casual or formal as the occasion demands. Created by Laura Worthington and Jim Wasco, the design is based on pointed pen Spencerian Script handwriting. “It’s like one of those German italics from the early 20th century, that have beautiful shapes that hold their own,” says Wasco. Elicit Script spans five weights, from Extra Light to Bold, and three styles – Formal, Normal and Casual. This makes it an incredibly versatile script design, easily paired with other typefaces and able to be dressed up or down, depending on what it’s used for. Porker was an experiment in making a barely readable but very simple and very bold typeface with no curves. It is caps only with some of the letters on the lower-case keys giving alternate versions. Include are three variants, a tall version, a striped version, and a randomized version. The striped version can be placed in a layer above the regular version to give two-colored letters.

Notebook BH Black was inspired by the block lettering we used to draw on our school binders. Notebook is a unicase design, with the lowercase drawn to the cap height, and each "case" having a distinctly different flavor. The fun and seemingly unlimited combinations of the upper and lowercase forms make it difficult to stop typing innocuous phrases and, if you're mobile, can even make boring lectures tolerable!

This extra stout slab serif derives its inspiration from two Vincent Pacella designs: Pacella Barrel and Pacella Colossus. This all started with a love for Minister. This is a font designed by Carl Albert Fahrenwaldt in 1929. In the specimen booklet there’s a scan from Linotype’s page many years ago. They no longer carry the font. I’ve gone quite a ways from the original. It was dark and a bit heavy. But I loved the look and the readability. This came to a head when I started my first book on all-digital printing written from 1994-1995, and published early in 1996. I needed fonts to show the typography I was talking about. At that point oldstyle figures, true small caps, and discretionary ligatures were rare. More than that text fonts for book design had lining OR oldstyle figures, lowercase OR small caps—never both. So, I designed the Diaconia family (using the Greek word for minister). It was fairly rough. I knew very little. I later redesigned and updated Diaconia into Bergsland Pro —released in 2004. It was still rough (though I impressed myself). In 2006, I found myself needing a readable sans serif. So I went to Bergsland Pro, and eliminated the serifs. I named the font Brinar. I kept a flare in place for the serifs and cupped the ends. I was stunned. People loved it. It’s remained my bestseller until very recently. So, at the end of 2016 I decided that Brinar really needed some help. The flares were basically random. The stem width and modulation variances all needed to be fixed. My old OpenType feature code was quite limited and clumsy. So, I created the 6-font Biblia family. I cleaned up or redesigned all the glyphs. I updated the fonts to the 2017 set of features: small caps, small cap figures, oldstyle figures, fractions, lining figures, ligatures and discretionary ligatures. These are fonts designed for book production and work well for text or heads.

Hibagon is the Japanese equivalent of the Yeti from the Himalayas, or Bigfoot from North America. It is usually sighted on Mt. Hiba (Hiroshima prefecture), hence the name. I have never seen Hibagon myself, even though I have visited Hiroshima several times. Hibagon font is a nice, handpainted, all caps font with a mythical feel to it. It probably won’t scare you, but it will look good on anything that needs a bit of brushwork, or a bit of roughness.

Boutiera is an upright and soft vintage script with a modern twist. Its main characteristics are bouncy baseline, round forms and bumpy stems. Dolce is the next step in Elena Albertoni’s ongoing exploration of handwritten letterforms that started with her typefaces Dyna and Scritta. It is an attempt to arrive at a more naturally flowing type of handwriting, striking a balance between the orderly and the informal, while taking a critical look at the possibilities and limits of OpenType. Dolce uses OpenType functionality to achieve a strong sense of spontaneity. . Because the uppercase letters of Dolce are lively calligraphic initials, they should be used only in combination with lowercase, and not in all-caps setting; to make it easier for the user, Dolce includes a special OpenType feature that automatically substitutes initials with small caps when words are completely set in capitals. The small caps set is calmer, fitting nicely with the rest of the typeface. Dolce offers full support for Central European languages. Clinica Pro is a modern take on Swiss grotesques, with a little bit of an added personality. It features 8 weights, italics, 6 sets of figures, small caps and a bunch of ligatures. Still relatively neutral, it lets a brand stand out of the grotesque-crowded environment with support for multiple languages as well as Cyrillic script.

Sturdy is designed to be as black as possible yet still legible. As an OpenType Pro font it has my normal complement of around 500 characters. New to this font I have added what I call ordinals: first through tenth in addition to Caps, lowercase, small caps, lining, oldstyle, and small caps figures, ligatures, and so on.

Delfino Script is a cool, connecting script that can appear both retro and contemporary. Curved on the outsides of strokes, and jagged inside, the forms look like an abstraction of strips of tape, folding and flowing, or even marker pen style lettering. This script is not created by any pen though - its forms are constructed, not painted. Typographic features like ink traps add sparkle to the text. OpenType features include ligatures, contextual alternates (for more realistic connections) and stylistic sets. Stylistic Set 1 changes certain upper case letters into forms more suited for all caps setting, although they can also be used freely with the lower case. Set 2 changes the r into a less scripty form and set 3 adds a connecting tail to the q. Delfino Script would find itself at home in cookery books, fashion blogs, vintage car magazines and set large and proud on expanses of concrete, or, most likely, whatever you might have in mind for it! Delfina Script is practically identical to Delfino save for round tittles, periods and any other dot shaped glyph components. Strangely for such a little change, it does seem to give the face a different character.

I made this font using my index finger and Chinese ink. I thought the ink would come off easily, but I can tell you: it doesn’t.
