In one of our yearly type hunts, we came across the ancestor of this font, much wider and more decorative, with fine outside shading. Condition was poor so we did the obvious, cutting out the excess decoration and condensing the face optically. It reeks of dancing girls and drunken sailors and other colorful attributes of Old San Francisco.

Weaving is a family in which the letters fit together so that wavy lines separate them both horizontally and vertically. It creates this effect by alternating letters on upper-case keys with those on lower-case letters and this alternating is done automatically in applications that support the OpenType feature of contextual alternatives (calt). (The upper-case can be used alone but it unlikely that the lower-case characters could be used by themselves.) The family is a thinner and condensed version of the typeface Woven, but in condensing it, the tessellation properties that a were in Woven are lost. Manhattan was designed in 1970 for ITC by Tom Carnase, who also created Avant Garde Gothic. The distinguishing characteristic of this designer's work is found in the emphasis on the thick-thin constrast. In this case, Carnase approached the border of the impossible. The heavy vertical strokes stand opposite the finest of lines and the thick columns dominate the overall look. The basic forms are strictly constructed, as are those of Morris F. Benton's Broadway of 1925, to which many parallels can be found. Manhattan is best used for applications which will not be placed too far from the viewer, as at too great a distance the fine lines can no longer be seen. It should be used exclusively for headlines in medium point sizes.

The Swedish designer/typographer Anders Bodebeck designed the Bodebeck type family in 2002. Breakers is a sans serif originally conceived to be a display typeface. Works great in text also, but the diversity in weights is its strong point. Probably everyone living in Europe has heard of the (in)famous Route Du Soleil. The Route Du Soleil (Motorway Of The Sun) is a stretch of road from Paris to Lyon (in the south). Rough and ready, bold and urgent. Or playful and fun in bright colours. The original letters were cut from actual potatoes, then scanned in and converted to vector outlines. Lighter and more heavily inked versions were used for the three variants. Using Opentype character-substitution technology, Salvation rotates through three versions of each letter to create a naturally uneven printed effect. Unlike hot metal type, the potatoes were cut the right way around. This produced reversed prints, which were then flipped back in Photoshop. Originally produced for Hughes' Get Lettering activity book, the font was then extended to cover numbers, punctuation and full European language support.

Dez Yinznat Stencil is a condensed stencil sans serif inspired by the industrial city of Pittsburgh, PA USA. Stencil type was often used in the steel mills, scrap metal yards, railroads, warehouses, and other industrial institutions of Pittsburgh and is almost a signature for the City.
