MB NEGATIVESPACE was inspired on a trip to Birmingham with my wife, seeing a billboard with the main text and parts of it missing. The idea is to use it sparingly; use a good amount of tracking to fill in the blanks and it works even better. Great for headlines, displays logotypes and short texts.

An image found online of the first [1923] “Oreo Sandwich” package provided a type inspiration from the pen-lettered block sans with rounded corners used for the product's name. In the 1943 Three Stooges comedy short “Higher than a Kite”, Curly reaches into a box with the label “hand grenades” painted on its side and pulls out one of the devices. A bold, classic wood type newspaper headline was the inspiration for Early Edition JNL. The source of the type design was actually a dummy newspaper with the headline “Thursby and Archer Murders Linked” [which was used in the 1941 film noir classic “The Maltese Falcon” featuring an all-star cast headed by Humphrey Bogart, Mary Astor, Peter Lorre and Sidney Greenstreet]. Early Edition JNL is available in both regular and oblique versions.

The source for these hand-drawn initials was an early 20th Century French alphabet book whose pages were displayed online at an image sharing site. This style typifies the Art Nouveau period, and makes a wonderful paragraph starter or "drop cap" for your printed projects. Some users may still want to compose headlines with this font, but be aware there are no punctuation marks, accents or kerning - just the twenty-six initials.

“Victoria Underwood” was found within the pages of the 1923 American Type Founders specimen book.
