Impressed by the quality of the Aachen typeface that was originally designed for Letraset in 1969 and extended to include Aachen Medium in 1977, Jim Wasco of Monotype Imaging has extended this robust display design to create an entire family. Derived from the serif-accented Egyptienne fonts dating to the early 20th century, Aachen has serifs that are very solid but considerably shorter than those of its precursor. The incorporated geometrical elements, such as right angles and straight lines, provide the slender letters of Aachen with a slightly technological, stencil-like quality. Despite this, the effect of Aachen is by no means static; its dynamism means that this typeface, originally designed for use in headlines, has come to be used with particular frequency in sport- and fitness-related contexts. Jim Wasco, for many years a type designer at Monotype Imaging, recognized the potential of Aachen and decided to extend the typeface to create an entire typeface family. He appropriated the existing Aachen Bold in unchanged form and first created the less heavy cuts, Thin and Regular. Wasco admits that he found designing the forms for Thin a particular challenge. It took him several attempts before he was able to achieve consistency within the glyphs for Thin and, at the same time, retain sufficient affinity with the original Aachen Bold. But he finally managed to adapt the short serifs and the condensed and slightly geometrical quality of the letters to the needs of Thin. The weights Light, Book, Medium and Semibold were generated by means of interpolation. Supplemented by Extralight and Extrabold, the new Neue Aachen can now boast a total of nine different weights. Wasco initially relied on his predilection for genuine cursives in his designs for the Italic cuts. But it became apparent with these first trial runs that the soft curves of cursives did not suit Aachen and led to the loss of too much of its original character. Wasco thus decided to compromise by using both inclined and cursive letters. Neue Aachen Italic is somewhat narrower than its upright counterparts; the lower case 'a' has a closed form while the 'f' has been given a descender, but the letters have otherwise not been given additional adornments. The range of glyphs available for Neue Aachen has been significantly extended, so that the typeface can now be used to set texts not only in Western but also Central European languages. Wasco has also added a double-counter lowercase 'g' while relying on the availability of alternative letters in the format sets for the enhancement of the legibility of Neue Aachen when used to set texts. The seven new weights and completely new Italic variants have enormously increased the potential applications of Aachen and the range of creative options for the designer. While the Bold weights have proved their worth as display fonts, the new Book and Regular cuts are ideal for setting text. And the subtlety of Ultra Light will provide your projects with a quite unique flair. A vintage matchbook advertising the New York Liquor Mart – oddly enough, located in Chicago, Illinois – featured a pen and ink line drawing of the store’s exterior. The Art Deco lettering on the mansard was portrayed with a straight left shadow (as opposed to drop cast or extruded), making for an interesting multi-line typeface design. This is the one and only Neil Bold, designed by Wayne Stettler in 1966 and originally published as a Typositor typeface. Linotype Bengali, a revival This project by Neelakash Kshetriymayum and Fiona Ross commissioned by Monotype is at heart a revival of the now ubiquitous original Linotype Bengali typeface designed by Tim Holloway and Fiona Ross (1978-1982) based on Ross’s research for her doctoral studies in Indian Palaeography. The new Linotype Bengali is informed by more recent research by Ross and Kshetrimayum resulting in additional glyphs that serve contemporary needs in a variety of genres – the original had been specifically designed for newspaper composition and in now outdated digital formats. The new design makes use of OpenType features with the employment of contextual vowel signs for Bengali – a feature that Ross and Holloway had first introduced in Indian scripts for the Adobe Devanagari typeface – and has sophisticated contextual mark positioning. Furthermore, whereas the original design had existed in only two typestyles, extensive work has been undertaken to produce this new design in 5 weights: Light, Regular, Medium, Bold and Black. It has been an important aspect of this project to remain true to the original design concepts, and so to achieve optimal readability for sustained reading at small type-sizes, but the additional weights enable differentiation in document design, and afford users scope to produce textural variety in their outputs. This revival design is intended to widen the hitherto very limited palette of typographic choices in the field of textual communication in Bengali, Assamese and other languages that make use of the Bengali script.

The Devil's Poetry is a new blackletter typeface from Michael W. Moss. The lowercase letters feature a pleasing hexagonal visual cadence while the capital letters stand tall and modestly ornate. WIP Money Maker depicts the handwriting of man with verve, strength of purpose and resoluteness. The (lower case) characters are joined as it is usual in German speaking countries. Originally designed in 1995 the font has been extended by a lot of new characters such as accented characters, punctuation, symbols and currency symbols.

A completely square typeface. And wide. It is all futuristic and fast. I have redesigned the uppercase D (which was identical to the O), V and Y - and also a couple of the lowercase letters: a narrower r, a more identifiable t and f and weight corrections to the v, x and z. Bimbo is a monoline script font family created in 2018 by Francesco Canovaro for Zetafonts as an extension & redesign of the original Arsenale White typeface created with italian illustrator Jonathan Calugi. Bimbo expands the original design with six new weights and over 300 new characters to cover over 70 languages using the latin, greek and cyrillic alphabets, while keeping the handmade aesthetic that made successful the original font. Bimbo is essentially a display font, born for minimal lettering and logos, with a handwritten sensibility enhanced by the built-in letter swapping open type feature that makes sure double letters are always different one from another. Open counters and a monoline design allow for great readability at small sizes, making Bimbo the ideal font for creating fake handwritten notes and meta-textual jokes.

This font has been described as "one of the cutest fonts I've ever seen. I can imagine a beautiful, young 22-year-old fashion design student from Los Angeles, CA with this handwriting as she's writing in her journal." I have cleaned it up a bit, increased the size of all the dots slightly and then designed all the diacritics and expanded the character set. The lowercase "f" has a big overhang and the lowercase "j" goes really far to the left - I have programmed automatic (OpenType) Contextual Alternate versions that automatically substitute with shorter variants when letters collide. These alternate letters can also be switched on using the OpenType palette's Stylistic Alternates or Stylistic set 01 ("j") and 02 ("f"). Stobart is a script font based on the characters written in a letter by Mr Henry Stobart, dated 1899. It contains over 1200 individual glyphs, supports the extended latin character set and includes a total of 8 different alphabet sets to make up the extensive OpenType contextual substitution needed to make the font appear as genuinely handwritten as possible. It is for this reason that Stobart is an exclusively OpenType font and is intended for use in an application that has advanced OpenType support, although it should be said that the font will work (as in appear) in any application on any operating system that supports the OpenType font format, albeit without all those delightful features that make it a connected script.

Another of my hand drawn originals now digitized. It started out as a very bold, decorative initial capital letter - a 'font within a font' - but got extended to the full alphabet.

Galvani offers a new geometric Sans Serif with humanistic displays. With its straight lines and rectangular shapes, and its clean and coolish appearance, Galvani unites some of the principal sans design features of the last decades. Linotype Univers is a completely reworked version of the original Univers typeface family designed by Adrian Frutiger in 1957. After a long process of painstakingly detailed revision, Frutiger and the design staff at Linotype completed this large joint project in 1997. The result: a brilliant and cohesive font family of 63 weights and styles including the 4 monospaced typewriter weights. All the existing weights were completely redrawn, with careful attention paid to making the proportions more consistent with each other and improving fine details such as curves and thick-to-thin stroke ratios. The family was expanded from 27 to 63 weights, providing a much larger framework to graphic designers for choosing just the right style. The bold and condensed weights were reworked for improved legibility and on-screen application. The stroke weights were revised for consistency within each face as well as in relationship to the other weights. By following Frutiger's original designs, the humanist character of the sans serif Univers now comes through more distinctly. T he systemized numbering system has also been updated. With its sturdy, clean forms Univers can facilitate an expression of cool elegance and rational competence. In fact, the strong familial relationships between all the styles and weights make it a serviceable choice for large graphic design projects that require versatility with consistency. Frutiger was successful in staying true to his initial aims; the new Linotype Univers does indeed work in longer texts as well as for display settings. In 2010 the typeface family was extended and renamed into a more logical naming of "Univers Next" to fit better in the Platinum Collection naming. One more style has been added - "Black", for display use. Squarish in proportions, monoline letterforms gain more readability by having short rounded serifs and terminals. The typeface is ideal for use in display sizes, though is quite legible in text. Croog Pro is released as OpenType fonts with extended glyph amounts, which enabled support of more Latin languages as well as Cyrillic languages, and includes some OpenType features.

The popular Geogrotesque family becomes an extended system with the inclusion of three new members to the family; Geogrotesque Condensed, Geogrotesque Compressed and Geogrotesque Extra Compressed. The condensed series keep the spirit of the original one, and give way to a superfamily up to 56 styles. This new system fluidly varies between widths, ranging from the original width to a 55% of it in the narrower one. As their original partner, the new fonts are great headline families for publications, but will also work in text of intermediate length and point size. The Geogrotesque superfamily offers now one font for each design need. It is available in Open Type format and includes Ligatures, Tabular Figures, Fractions, Numerators, Denominators, Superiors and Inferiors. Cross Stitch Gothic is not intended for text use. It was designed for use as fancy monograms or initials. Cross Stitch Gothic is based on upper case characters 28 stitches tall and contains the characters A-Z. Most characters extend above the capital line or below the base line.
