Many times, when a new creative process is starting, it is triggered by an everyday action or item. In this case, the looks of a lady’s watch inspired Michael Herold to create his new typeface LUX. The sight of the chronograph sparked associations of the 1950s in Mr. Herold: While this decade was predominantly dominated by brush and feather scripts, there was also a bloom of strict and modern architecture. This special mix of strength and retro style is exactly what Michael Herold is trying to capture in his LUX. The result is a typeface which is perfectly suitable for use on book covers, posters and claims – thanks to its striking impression. The name LUX, Latin for light, is inspired by the high bright-dark contrast within the individual characters. So entspringt auch die Inspiration zur Erschaffung der LUX von Michael Herold dem Anblick einer Damenuhr. Diese Mischung aus Strenge und 50er Jahre Retro-Stil soll in der LUX zum Ausdruck kommen. Das Ergebnis ist eine Schrift, die sich mit ihrer plakativen Wirkung perfekt für Buchumschläge, Poster und Claims eignet. Namensgebend war der starke hell-dunkel Kontrast innerhalb der Schrift – festgehalten in dem lateinischen Wort für Licht.

Rolphie can be your go-to sans-serif, with 16 easy-to-read weights and 10 versions for each weight, and the subtlety of choice that represents. The versions contained in each weight are: Regular; Condensed; Half-Condensed; Expanded; Small Capitals: and their italic counterparts. (At heavier weights particularly it seemed to be justified to have two Condensed versions). Plus there's 20 funky versions with the letters all shook up (that would make a good title for a song), or jumbled around, plus some Shadow, Doubled-Up, College, and other FX versions. In total there's 180 variations, giving a comprehensive selection of both standard and funky fonts, and that subtle degree of choice of weight. To make things easier, the weights are put in ascending numerical order from 01 to 16, and the FX versions have been stuck in the 80s and 90s, (like two musicians I know). There are grouped packages available for certain weights (which have 10 fonts in them) and the complete family package (180 fonts) which represent better value than the individual fonts, and there's a basic package containing the Normal and Italic versions of all 16 weights (32 fonts). A limit of 5 sub-family packages has been imposed, unfortunately, which precludes a more comprehensive selection. To let you know what's in the font that you might otherwise never know about . . . With Discretionary Ligatures on, you get special characters if you type Mc St. Rd. Bd. Ave. c/o No. (p) (P) - include the full-stop/period. With Stylistic Alternates switched on, you get plenty of extra characters - including a WiFi symbol (type Wifi or WiFi) / bullet numbers instead of ordinary numbers / that different U-dieresis / special characters for c/o No. Mc / an upside down ~ / a huge bullet, and different forms for cent, dollar, percent, per-thousand. As you'd expect, there's all the accented characters for all Western European scripts using Latin letters, and standard ligatures, plus other Open Type features including Class Kerning, Slashed-Zero, Historical Forms, Sub- and Superscript numbers, fractions for halves, thirds and quarters, Ornamental forms giving bullet numbers, etc. There's also the main mathematical operators, symbols like card-suits and male/female signs and so on, and some more obscure stuff like schwa and O-horn, U-horn - and there's lots more if you can Access All Alternates. Much will depend on what your software recognises. The Small Caps versions have (intentionally) lost the ligatures for lower case ff, fi, fj, fl, fr, fu, ffi, ffj, ffl, ffr, ffu. The names for the weights are not absolute - we had to make up some names to make them stretch out to sixteen - so rather - see them as relative to each other, being in ascending numerical order by weight.

This is a font imitating the stage of outline construction of letters using drawing tools - compass and ruler. It is very geometric (with auxiliary lines, axes, centers of circles, tangents, and conjugation of circles), although the circles are somewhat compressed from four sides. The second style, which plays the role of Bold style, is a hatched version of the Regular style. The font has very small elements that appear in a sufficiently large size, so it is better to use it for large compositions, in particular, advertisements, posters, large headings, etc. The family is named "Khachatur" after the name of the father of designer Ruben Tarumian — architect Khachatur Hakobyan, his first master.

Iza W and Intellecta Design are proud to announce Invitation Script, a modern and clean revival of the classic work of the Portuguese master penman Manuel de Andrade de Figueiredo, whose work can be seen in “Nova Escola para aprender a ler, escrever, e contar (...)'' (1722). Invitation Script is the third script superfamily published by Intellecta Design, after Penabico and Van den Velde Script. Invitation Script has original letters designed by Iza W. Creative direction and core programming were provided by Paulo W. Chyrllene K assisted with some work on unusual and archaic styles, resulting in a special font - Invitation Script Archaic (soon available). Invitation started out from Andrade’s script style and evolved into a voluptuous script font family. The result is a typeface ideal for beautiful headings, signatures, art work typography, titles and short pieces of hand-lettered text. Samman is a Kufic simple Arabic typeface. It can be used to decorate public signs in streets, airports, hospitals, schools, malls, hotels, mosques, and other public places. My family's surname is "Samman" which stands for the person who sells fat especially the one produced by cows ("Samn" in Arabic). Consequently, "Samman" Typeface was designed for eternizing the memory of my family. The main characteristic of "Samman" Typeface is the leaf-shaped style for some of its Arabic characters such as "Dad", "Sad", "Faa", "Meem" and others. The distinguishing artistic design of its "Haa" character adds a unique feature to this typeface especially when connected with other characters. The shape of the characters' "dot", "dots", and "point" is innovative; a triangle with a semi-circle shape. "Samman" Typeface is suitable for books' covers, advertisement light boards, and titles in magazines and newspapers. This font is a clean, modern sans serif bold. Named after “De Rotterdam”* this huge and super cool building (read the story below). Great for headlines, Posters, Flyers but also well legible at small size in large texts. Contains All European language accents and characters. --- The Story --- *This complex is located in the Kop Van Zuid district of Rotterdam, on Wilhelminapier. I was lucky to see this building from the beginning (2009) growing up (2013) That time when I was working and living here. I was always amazed by the design and how huge it is every time I took a look at it while driving or walking on the Erasmus Bridge. When I was going to work or just hiking around the city. It has a special meaning and message for me: I started creating fonts in my free time in 2010 when I came to this city to work. I was factory worker, dishwasher etc. I grew together with this amazing construction from brick to brick, step by step. By the time its construction finished, I was able to quit my day job and become a full time freelance designer.

The typeface family TV Nord is based on the corporate typeface NDR Sans which was developed by Elsner+Flake for the Norddeutsche Rundfunk (www.ndr.de) between 1999 and 2001. This new design came into being as part of a complete overhaul of the visual image of the NDR. This became necessary because the NDR, founded in 1954, incorporated the stations of the East German states Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (1992) and Brandenburg (1997) after the re-unification of Germany. The Hamburg advertising agency DMCGroup developed a new and unified image for the NDR which is in existence to this day. The typeface TV Nord relates to the design of the Trade Gothic and similar American sans serif typefaces of the early part of the last century. Its development concerns itself as much with good legibility for print, as it does for the reproduction on TV screens, which among others, is achieved through its high x-height. The logotype for the NDR as well was developed from the capitals of the NDR Sans. In 2014, the TV Nord was revised stylistically and expanded to incorporate all European-Latin languages. As part of this effort, further complementary cuts were added.

ULGA Grid Rounded is the smooth, rounded sibling of ULGA Grid and ULGA Grid Solid. The typeface consists of three weights, regular, medium and bold, with corresponding oblique styles. Every character in the extended ULGA Grid family shares the same width. ULGA Grid Rounded features a rounded square design, giving this typeface a soft, yet sturdy appearance. A few years ago I've discovered the work of one of the most prolific typeface designers of the Bruce type Foundry in NYC during late nineteenth century. Browsing Julius Herriet's work I found a very unique kind of ligatures in his patented "Old Style Ornamented" type design. Some letters were designed with a little top tail that allowed them to connect to each other. After that, I found that he also designed a single italic weight of the same font 7 years later. Since the beginning of the Opentype days I’ve been deeply obsessed with exploring different ways to build ligatures, so that lead me up to this point where I felt the need to create “Plethora”, this new font inspired by Herriet’s work. Extrapolating weights, adding variable technology and playing with additional interconnected letters and alternates. Definitely, Plethora means a large or excessive amount of something, and this font tries to bring back this abundance of details two centuries later. Available in 9 weights, from roman to italic, and also as variable format, “Plethora” supports plenty of latin languages and is a perfect choice for today’s design tides.

Quiller is another catch from the hot metal days, another one that managed to slip through the fingers of both the photo-typers and digitizers of last 4 decades. JJ Sierke’s Privat design from 1966 is now resurrected and heavily extended to be used by computer users everywhere. The original design was revived, and two whole new fonts were added to it - one with very unique swash caps and alternates, and one with many many ligatures and letter-combination ornaments. Quiller is a cross between brush calligraphy and very casual fast handwriting. It even has a slight Arabic simulation to it. Given such traits, the addition of a swash font and a multitude of ligatures comes in very handy to keep the natural flow of the font and maintain the elegance of its spirit. Those who like the auto-magic of OpenType’s intelligent substitution should like the fact that the OTF version is a single font with all the bells and whistles ready to go in the swash and discretionary ligatures features. If you use the latest versions of Adobe programs, the OTF version of Quiller is highly recommended.

After a lot of time sitting at my desk, creating fonts and trying to figure out how my new software works, I really like to work out a bit. The only thing that I do not like is the music they play at the gym; it is usually a selection of poppy tunes that appeals to a large audience. But not to me. I prefer my death metal - and eighties music, as it brings back a lot of good memories. So, I bought myself some ear buds and installed a music streaming app on my phone. Yes, I know, I am probably the last person on earth who discovered streaming... One day, during a workout session, I listened to a list of eighties music and one song that I had forgotten about started playing: Rappers Delight by The Sugarhill Gang. When I started working on the font, I had to think about the song and named it Square Beat. Square Beat font, other than the name implies, is a rounded, handmade font, ideally suited for books and magazines aimed at a young audience, toy packaging or posters. It comes with great language support, including Vietnamese.

Kornelis de Vries, a headmaster from the Dutch province of Friesland, cultivated new potato breeds that he named after pupils in his school. In the early 1900s he came up with the tasty Bintje (a Frisian girl’s name) and it became a big success – in Belgium and France it has remained the most popular potato for french fries to this day, more than a century since its introduction. Donald Roos took 10 kilos of fresh Bintje potatoes and cut the Bint typeface by hand with a short, sharp knife. He then inked each character once and printed it twice; the second, lighter printing is accommodated in the lower case alphabet. The challenge was to create a single typeface weight that was versatile enough without a large font family, and could be put to use with a variety of media formats, from book text to advertising spreads, all while remaining legible and delightful to read. Originally designed between the years 2002 and 2004, the inspiration for the design originated from the concepts of Stefano Giovannoni's uber-contemporary industrial designs and architecture. Where to start with such a font design was obvious to Diphthong Regular's designer, Max Hancock; to create a transitional, slab serif form that was corky and serious, interchangeably. The characteristics of the font followed a postmodern playfulness, popular in many sub-cultures looking for an alternative to the harsher, cut-shape, deconstructivist styles. And, the unique objective behind the design was to make it so that the usual difficult combination of the t and h (hth) in language was legible as well as pleasant to look at, thus the reason for the name. It was meant to have the appearance of the hemlock plant without being too derivative; it’s thin drooping stems conjure images of Hamlet’s mad Ophilia clutching sickly weeds while thinking them to be flowers. It also projects the appearance of an ice cold, wrought iron, cemetery gate. The sort that one might pass on a damp overcast day.
