Malou Verlomme designed Madera with graphic designers in mind – drawing on his decade of experience designing bespoke type to create a versatile, easy-to-use geometric sans serif that ticks off a long list of branding requirements. Its sharp apexes add some flavour to the design, which offers an honest, trustworthy tone of voice – but with a twist. “The design doesn’t go out of its way to attract attention, but is still very solid,” explains Verlomme. “It still has a fair amount of warmth and personality, in a very understated manner. Morro is based on simple geometric shapes – circles, triangles and rectangles. Imagine cutting circles, triangels and rectangles from paper and arranging them into letters where the outer edges form a filled figure. Arranging figures like this to form letters is nothing unique. You can find several beautiful examples of alphabets that inspired the creation of Morro. Everywhere from a 1936 booklet by Draughtsman called ”Modern lettering for all branches of commercial arts” to obvious examples is from the paragon of the design industry - Milton Glaser - with his typeface Baby Teeth. What sets Morro apart from other digitized versions of Glasers' ”Baby teeth”, or other similar designed fonts, is that Morro is expanded into lower case and also supports Basic latin, Western European, Central European, south Eastern European and Pinyin. There are also stylistic alternatives to some of the glyphs. Morro Regular works like a stencil and is accompanied by a block shadow style and an outline. The Morro family of fonts are layered and can be superimposed on each other to create several types of text effects.

  9. Tamba Sans by Dharma Type, $19.99
Tamba Sans has strong geometric frames. Somewhat condensed and somewhat squarish letterforms can create a powerful atmosphere. At the same time, the very clear, neutral and distinguishable letterforms make it legible and readable. With the spread of the internet, the digital world is overflowing with “designed” stuff. To survive this chaotic world as a designer, you should use a strong typeface to catch the eyes of an unspecified large number of visitors/customers. This is why it is so important to be strong and powerful. One more important thing is the legibility, but the eye-catching design has a tendency to be unusual. Those two things conflict with each other. Tamba Sans solved this problem with an exquisite balance. Tamba Sans consists of 7 weights and their matching Italics for a wide range of usages. Farther, Tamba Sans is supporting international Latin languages and basic Cyrillic languages including Basic Latin, Western Europe, Central and South-Eastern Europe. Also CSS covers Mac Roman, Windows1252, Adobe1 to 3. This wide range of international characters expands the capability of your works.
  10. DF Dejavu Pro by Dutchfonts, $39.00
This font is an orphanage where all the beautiful details of classical grotesque typefaces from the early twentieth century are gathered, and thus living together, are forming a ‘new’, happy family. The aim was to collect my favorite characters in one font. The start was an eclectic collection orientated on British types from the Caslon Doric No. 4, the Monotype Grotesque, the Gill, the Franklin Gothic up to the Transport. In this amalgamation I avoided the narrow apertures in the ‘e’, ‘c’ and in the numerals ‘5’, ‘6’ and ‘9’ and enlarged the x-height dramatically. To the classical slanted form of the italics I added real italic forms for ‘a’, ‘e’ and ‘g’ in order to obtain a more distinguished italic style. DF-Dejavu Pro supports all Latin-based languages (Western, Central-European, Eastern-European, Baltic and Turkish) and includes small capitals, ligatures, inferior & superior numerals and letters, fractions, various numeral styles: proportional lining, tabular lining, proportional old-style, tabular old-style and last but not least a slashed zero.
  11. Rig Shaded by Jamie Clarke Type, $15.00
Rig Shaded is an award-winning 3D type family with a geometric sans serif at its heart. As its name suggests, Rig is designed as a framework to support a range of striking 3D effects. It has four versatile weights including a unique ‘zero’ weight. Each has two grades of distinctive halftone shading, Fine and Coarse, which emphasises Rig’s solid appearance. Rig developed from my quest to find ideal letter shapes for a shaded typeface while retaining their geometric principles and legibility. Each character has been designed to ensure maximum clarity and harmony when combined with 3D effects. The extrude and shaded styles have been handcrafted to produce a consistent weight and tone. Rig’s character set includes 230 glyphs, supporting 198 languages, including all Western, Central and South Eastern European languages. You can buy individual weight packs of Rig Shaded or the entire family for a discounted cost. See the full specimen for Rigs design features, additional examples and tips on using the typeface. Note: Rig’s shading styles have a high level of detail so may process more slowly in some applications.

  16. Johnny by Canada Type, $24.95
Johnny is the latest addition to the long line of popular psychedelic/hippy/funky art nouveau fonts representing the retro side of the Canada Type library. It is the digitization of a popular 1969 Phil Martin typeface that was known by two different names: Harem and Margit. The film type version had plenty of irregularities and quirks that made it seem like it was done in a hurry. In this digital version the errors have been corrected and the character set expanded to include international characters with built-in alternates, to be on par with what today's layout artists expect from a high quality font. This font saw a lot of use on record sleeves and music posters throughout the pre-disco part of the 1970s, which makes it a veteran of both the psychedelic and funk periods. This makes it the sharper, sturdier art nouveau contemporary personality of Canada Type's Tomato font. This font contains a very expanded character set that includes full support for Central, Eastern and Western European languages, as well as Baltic, Turkish, Esperanto, Greek, Cyrillic and Vietnamese.
  17. Bellwood Gothic by Breauhare, $19.99
Bellwood Gothic™ is an unorthodox but happy pairing of upper and lowercases that breaks typographic rules: its capitals evoke traditional early 20th century styling and strength. Lowercase displays a softer, more warm and friendly flavor that points to a Bauhaus aesthetic. But for some strange reason they work so well together! Therein lies the mystique of this font. Overall it isn’t strictly uniform in stroke but shows some variation of color. The sofa poster includes a cameo appearance by breauhare’s own popular Daddy’s Hand™ font. Bellwood Gothic’s nostalgic flavor of the 1960s & 1970s still conveys a modern look that lends itself to sports, fashion, lifestyle and more. The wide track of the lettering helps short words easily fill spaces. Includes stylistic alternates for the lowercase a, e, & l (L), plus 13 uppercase letters! Among OpenType features are Stylistic Alternates, Stylistic Sets, Ligatures, Fractions, & Case-sensitive forms. Extended support for Western, Central, and Eastern European languages is included. Use it for headlines, subheads, branding, editorial, packaging, and logos!

  19. Huckleberry by Canada Type, $24.95
Huckleberry is a revival and expansion of a 1973 typeface called Mark Twain, which was G. Jaeger's reaction to the popularity of VGC's Eightball (also digitized and expanded as Orotund by Canada Type) from across the ocean. Jaeger's reaction was typical German efficacy, with majuscules that surpass their inspiration in art and humour, and minuscules that could have been just the thing if one wanted to make the Eightball lowercase friendlier. Back in its day, this font reached its own heights of popularity in Western Europe, but in the Americas it was less known because art nouveau faces were being made by the hundreds in the 1970s. Round, happy and bouncy, Huckleberry comes as a timely response to public demand for big and cheerful letters. Huckleberry is also very effect-friendly. Stretch it a bit, drop-shadow it, warp it, and it will still keep its cheer and communicate the message with a smile. Huckleberry comes in all popular formats, and contains plenty of alternates sprinkled throughout the character set.

  30. Quorthon by Monotype, $18.99
Quorthon is a collection of blackletter style fonts in 3 distinct voices – Black, Dark, and Grey. Each style has a more contemporary feel than the centuries-old blackletter standard, the capitals in particular were drawn to aid legibility in today’s world rather than to follow tradition. All the fonts contain a number of alternates that will help you embellish your typography – when used subtly, they can add flair to your titles and logo designs. BLACK is the most severe of the three styles, its lowercase forms were inspired by text I discovered on a marble tomb in a remote countryside church in England. The aggressive barbs and spurs give these fonts an imposing stature, ideal for branding, advertising and logotype, where a forceful message is required. DARK is a little more subtle, while retaining a barbed style, more contemporary serifs are present. The highly-contrasted, calligraphic glyphs are full of character and subtle nuances that give these fonts a unique personality. Again, these fonts are perfect for branding, advertising and logotype designs... and maybe even a tattoo? GREY is the softest of all the Quorthon styles, its minimal design and clean, straight lines make it ideal for creating stunning titles and headlines. It evokes the past with its blackletter pedigree, yet is imbued with a modern architectural influence. Key Features: • 15 font family – 5 weights across 3 styles • 17 Alternates in each font • Western European Language Support (Latin only) • 250+ glyphs per font.

Spontaneous and energetic, Angeletta is satisfyingly inky – with strokes almost spilling into one another. Its quirky personality and titling version makes it a good choice for packaging and social expression, while its distinctive character could work well in branding, perhaps paired with a more sedate sans serif. The Angeletta typeface is a calligraphic script designed by Robert E. Leuschke exclusively for Monotype. It is available in OpenType OTF and TTF fonts formats. Angeletta has 900 glyphs with OpenType typographic features like contextual and stylistic alternatives, swashes, ligatures and fractions.

  39. JAF Facit by Just Another Foundry, $42.00
Facit is a contemporary sans serif text face. It is designed to be a highly legible and flexible font that does not draw the attention to itself. Instead of being original by itself it is the result of a careful examination of ancient as well as modern formal concepts. “It is by definition impossible to design an un-conventional typeface. Type is pure convention, this is why we can read each other’s written words”, says its designer Tim Ahrens. However, rather than generating an average, existing principles were consciously combined into a unique design solution: The word ‘Facit’, in its German version, means ‘conclusion’. The fonts are provided in OpenType format. Each font contains 720 glyphs. Technically, they follow the Adobe Pro fonts and provide the same glyph set and OpenType functionality. OpenType features include ligatures, true small capitals, superiors, inferiors, numerators and denominators. Every font contains old style and lining figures, both in a proportional and a tabular design. For some letters there alternate characters.
