We always wanted to design a gothic typeface. Our most similar typefaces are Rude and Firme, but Rude has some very delicate curves especially visible in the vertical strokes and Firme introduces a type family with reasonably big ascenders and descenders. On the other hand, Isento has a much more straightforward approach to the particular genre. Loosely inspired by Times Gothic, introduced in the American Type Founders Specimen Book and Catalogue from 1923, soon followed its very own path. Is our first typeface that clearly shows a distinct weight difference between the uppercase and the lowercase and the spacing is very open to provide a much more mechanical feeling. Isento and Isento Slab ranges from Thin to ExtraBold with perfectly matching italics. Immediately seemed very clear that a slab serif companion would follow the sans, therefore Isento Slab is the perfect companion to Isento, with very strong rectangular serifs, ideal to set short passages of text or to become the key actor in a big headline.

Mezalia Sans is a logical continuation of the Mezalia family. Its shapes are based on medieval calligraphic style: the Bastarda. This time the evolution is taken a step further, as these classic shapes are merged with the straightforwardness of a modern sans-serif. This results in an original, strong yet very much usable typeface, that can hold its own in a wide range of applications. Mezalia Sans has two distinct styles: straight and cursive (true italic if you will, although the word is not really correct here), which come in ten weights, from thin to black. This wide range ensures that whether you are looking for delicate or bold strokes (or a combination of both) you will be satisfied. As as a computer programmer, it is my job to stare at screens of text all day. As soon as I learned the mechanics of font design, I boldly set out to design a typeface from my own handwriting that I could use to make my life easier. First, it had to have very distinctive numerals (trust me, it can be easy to mistake an 8 for a 3 in code), it had to have huge punctuation characters (even Perl code like '[lN*1lK[d2%Sa2/d0' looks good in Debug), and it had to be a bit friendlier than Courier (so that I don't give up hope when my code won't compile). I had so much fun designing it that I decided to give it strange lower-case 'i's and 'm's as a bonus. I also spent far too much time hinting it so that it would look as nice as possible at low resolutions.

Just before the end of 2020 all schools in Holland closed for the second time, because of an increase in the number of COVID 19 cases. This means that my wife and I have to educate our three kids at home. The kids are great and take their tasks seriously, but it is difficult, as all three of them require different educational levels. I am sure you parents understand. Trying to get some work done is virtually impossible, so my wife and I made a schedule and we live by ‘on duty’ and ‘off duty’ days. I was thinking of this when I created this font (obviously on an ‘off duty’ day). Home Education is a handwritten scribble font. It was made with a Sharpie pen (possibly used by one of my kids, because I noticed tiny ink stains on my wooden dining table…). It comes with all the diacritics you can hope for and lovely double letter ligatures for you to play with.

Let it be known that this font is named for Excalibur, King Arthur's Magic Sword. The font is derived from a note that Arthur hastily penned to his Queen, Guinevere, during a lull in one of his many battles against the Saxons. Arthur's armour was so hefty that he could not easily seat himself, and so to pen his letter to Guinevere he plunged his legendary sword Excalibur into the marshy soil on which he had been fighting and thereby steadied his writing hand with the hasp of his magical sword. This ancient and battle-weary font is based on the writing from a fragment of that original document. It has been heralded by modern scholars as "grunge" writing of great antiquity. Platinus Script Pro is the latest example of what has now become a Sudtipos tradition: Adapting conventional calligraphic methods from the last two centuries to produce modern digital scripts for the current one. This time the resulting font explores the evolution of invitation scripts from the classic commercial lettering of the 1930s to the ideas clearly visible in the greeting cards of the 1980s and 1990s. Most base characters are made up of a single stroke, with some of the strokes driven from the top down, and some from the bottom up, putting the emphasis on the casual but precise fluidity of the hand, an emphasis magnified by the expert use of loops and swashes everywhere. Re-introducing the classic mid-1500s Garamond forms for the twenty-first century is never an easy task. But Hans van Maanen makes a fine attempt at just that by remodeling the traditional shapes through a modern lens with stunning results. Aragon is a workhorse family that performs very well in a variety of text sizes, from footnotes and legal copy to lengthy body sets. Its combination of wedge serifs with uniquely tapered stems offers a sturdy Dutch touch that improves legibility altogether, while at the same time the slight stress shift to the top half of the characters makes the immersive reading experience very open and comfortable. Trapped home during the Coronavirus outburst of March 2020 the Zetafonts team found some solace from the world-wide anxiety by designing letters for the #36daysoftype challenge. To fight dark thoughts and spread some good karma we decided to add a free font twist, selecting the best glyphs drawn to develop a collection of ten free typefaces for download. We did our best to make this little gift to the community valuable, though developed in record time: although playful and excessive, these typefaces all stem from our current research in contemporary trends and historical design solutions, bridging calligraphy and design. The typefaces have been published daily starting Monday, March 30. You can download and use the typefaces in any way you desire, as they are totally free for commercial and non-commercial use. We are not asking anything back, but feel free to share the good karma and, if you want, please consider a donation for hospitals.

Core Escher is an optical illusion type family which has two sub-families: Core Escher A and B. Core Escher A has impossible shapes inspired by the optical illusion works of artist M.C. Escher. The letterforms in this type family are structurally twisted and complicated but it looks simple because of its simple strokes. And for easy color variations, it split into two fonts, Core Escher A Left and Right. Core Escher B has a different kind of optical illusion. The letters of Core Escher B look like three dimentions by just putting thin lines on bold letters. Also B has two sub-families that have different viewpoints. Core Escher Family supports complete Basic Latin, Cyrillic, Central European, Turkish, Baltic character sets. Each font includes proportional figures, tabular figures, numerators, denominators, superscript, scientific inferiors, subscript, fractions and case features. A NEW HOPE! You begged with us..! You pleaded with us..! But we decided to release the official Richard Starkings font anyway! Huh? WHAT? You heard that line before? Where? Hmm... on this very site...? Well, yes, the Hedge Backwards font is all fine and dandy and does resemble the lettering legerdemain of comic book lettering robot, Richard Starkings... but has it been tweaked over the years to better suit the writing stylings of ELEPHANTMEN creator and writer, Richard Starkings? Has it been refurbished and digitally remastered by ELEPHANTMEN designer and Comicraft Secret Weapon, John JG Roshell? Hmm? No? Well then... here it is, retooled, reimagined and reStarkingsed...ah, what the hell, we started from scratch! This ain't no Greedo Shoots First -- you won't have to keep your pasty '70s VHS recordings of previous Richard Starkings Fonts inside a concrete bunker. Because any other font that claimed to be the official Richard Starkings font would have been called The Official Richard Starkings Font, would it not?

Milescut is a display typeface inspired by some seminal covers the graphic designer and photographer Reid Miles created for the Blue Note Records between the 1950s and 1960s. Miles made almost 500 covers for Blue Note in this period, including some using the hand-cut technique that consists basically in doing vertical cuts in capital letters and numerals to create a unique style within the universe he created for Blue Note. Milescut is a tribute to this small “cut” 😬 in his trajectory within the greatest record label of all time. This idea came about while I was working on what will become soon a revival of a wood type that I fell in love with when flipping through a Specimen of the MACHINE CUT WOOD TYPE manufactured by The WM. H. Page Wood Type Co. Milescut has two extra sets of alternates that work cyclically when activated in your OpenType menu and lots of ligatures, pretty cool :)

The business name “Sylvin” did not offer many characters to work with, so completion of the digital type design was simply left to imagination. Eurobrush Pro is a new handwriting script designed by German type designer Ralph M. Unger. He produced not only the standard Western character complement, but added all of the Eastern European Latin glyphs and, on top of that, even the complete Cyrillic characters. Born and grown up in Th�ringen, former East Germany, Unger has a fair knowledge of Polish and also Russian (Cyrillic). Eurobrush Pro is a very beautiful, casual, informal and modern handwriting in `brush-style of a contemporary type designer. Even though a digitized handwriting, it keeps a very natural and pleasant look, at the same time being generous and well-readable. The individual characters combine quite easily and perfectly with no need for extra variants (although Unger included a number of ligatures). Eurobrush Pro is well-suited for plenty of applications, e.g. personal correspondence, invitations, greeting cards, headlines etc. Eurobrush Pro is supplied in the complete Latin character set (West + East) including ligatures, plus Cyrillic.

Known sometimes as “utopia”, “journey” other times, but also named with name´s place where one wants to go, “Ithaca” home of Ulysses. Typographic Cartesian coordinates are usually two, from the skeleton, the narrower, to the black, the widest. Nowadays, Maese Patau had traveled a road made by four Cartesian axes of typographic geography. A road from thick to thin, from expanded to condensed, to offer us a new family, a larger and extensive series than the traditional family. 48 “relatives” in a pure neo-grotesque font, with a large “eye” that makes it especially suitable for display. Solid hinting in small sizes due to it´s pure and simple basic forms. The jazzy cursive, available in all weights, looks as a simply slanted letter, but when works in conjunction with its regular version, generates an outstanding typographic game. As usual, Maese Patau offer us a extensive typeface in weights, extensive on supported languages, and all kind of OpenType´s capabilities.

Mozsár, named after Mozsár Street in the downtown of Budapest (pronounced ‘mo-zhar’, meaning mortar in Hungarian.) Mozsár is a unicase display typeface with constructivist characteristics from the early 20th Century. It uses pure geometric shapes and purposefully departs from strict typographical rules to give a more friendly look. With Mozsár you can create really unique and awesome looking displays, titles and even name plates for your business. It works very well in big size. The central idea behind the design was that two variants of the typeface would randomly alternate as the user types. The typeface uses Contextual Alternates (CALT) created with the OpenType’s semi-random feature to mix the variants. The width and height of the letter shapes are generally equal, but I made some exceptions to lend the type a character of unexpectedness. The curves are identical in both versions of each letter, and the intersections of the axes are always perpendicular (with some evident exceptions).

MVB Dovetail is an editorially focused text serif designed by David Sudweeks. The working idea for the typeface came from a design school letter-making exercise: Take a pair of scissors and a few large sheets of paper, and start cutting. The resulting letters and the action itself of cutting them out of paper informed the type design process, producing strong, simple shapes and an open, inviting texture. Dovetail’s tone is crisp and straightforward. Its classic letterforms, set off with a touch of playfulness, give the design both a practical and spontaneous personality. The text weights capably set copy at a variety of sizes for print and render crisply on screen. Its lightest and heaviest weights perform best at display sizes. Care has been taken to save the typographer’s time with OpenType features including contextual punctuation and symbols to fit mixed-case, small-caps, and all-caps settings, as well as figure sets tuned to each use.
