Originally designed by Morris Fuller Benton in 1925, FontHaus's 1995 revival is based on a design named "Novelty Broadway". Characters were referenced from "Commercial Art of Show Card Lettering" by James Eisenberg, published by D. Van Nostrand Company in 1945. This Broadway is classic Broadway but with some charming differences such as a slanted lower case "f" a remarkable lower case "g" and a high-waisted upper case case "R", as only a few examples. It was named "Novelty" because the alphabet incorporated a concave design feature in the tops and bottoms of each letter. These differences allow this version to possess much more personality than that of all other Broadway designs on the market. It looks almost hand brushed, has soft edges and is no where near as sterile looking as all the other digital versions. It feels very 1925!

At this time I found the Album of monograms – a guide for doing handicrafts in families and educational institutions. It was published in St. Petersburg in 18ХХ. Northstream is a Neo-Grotesque in motion. The typeface was inspired by an attempted photograph of an interesting shop sign that was interrupted by a passing truck. The resulting effect was a blur of movement and designer, Hendrik Weber, wanted to capture that feeling within the typeface. Probably one of the most unusual applications of a stencil took place in 1964 when Union Carbide [then-owner of the still-new line of "Glad" brand plastic wrap and storage bags] sponsored a $100,000 contest to match up a stencil of their logo in order to win a prize. Arzachel is a humanistic sanserif with a big x-height and a specific organic look. Its design is scientifically sharp and efficient in small type sizes as well as rugged and dramatic in headlines. Arzachel’s essential feeling comes from several features: all the letters are slightly sloped, stem terminations are flared at the top, and the terminals in letters a, c, e, f… are widening with the inside parts completely flat. The stroke contrast is low in the regular weight while it increases in the black; finally the capitals have an inscriptional flavor. Despite being a sanserif (thus a product of recent typography) Arzachel’s roots stretch back to the Renaissance tradition: Olocco took inspiration from some of the early and rather weird types cut in Venice in the 15th century. Arzachel was conceived during Olocco’s MA in Reading to provide a companion for his Zenon for use in small type sizes. But instead of expanding the Zenon family with optical sizes, the designer decided on a sans with its own personality rather than a sanserif version of Zenon with chopped-off serifs.
