The year 2022 went and 2023 came. I can honestly say that last year was a horrible year and I am happy it ended a couple of days ago. The first week after New Year’s Eve always fills my head with the U2 song ‘New Year’s Day’ - so I named this font after a line from the lyrics. I also happened to watch a fantastic movie called ‘Im Westen Nights Neues’, directed by Edward Berger, but based on a book by Erich Maria Remarque, which, in English, was published as ‘All Quiet On The Western Front’. So there you have it: naming a font in 2 easy steps! ;-) All Is Quiet is a lovely brush font, which I created using my father in law’s Chinese pencil and ink. I can suggest some uses here, but I am convinced you can come up with that yourself.

The original typeface was designed by Albert Kapr between 1971 and 1973 for Typoart in Dresden. Kapr was the font designer and teacher as well as book author on type design of former East Germany. Police JNL was modeled from one of the many fonts created by the late Alf Becker exclusively for Signs of the Times magazine during the 1930s through the 1950s. This was a bit of a difficult design to translate into a digital font file, because the individual characters did not follow a formal structure as to the width and length of the cast shadows or the letter shapes—such is the way of the hand-lettered alphabet. Special thanks to Tod Swormstedt of ST Publications (and curator of the American Sign Museum in Cincinnati) for providing the archival material to work from in creating this font.
