While sketching for a music project logo, Donald DBXL Beekman looked at several wood type alphabets as a starting poing. One of these was No.120, patented in 1880 by William Hamilton Page. With its distinct diagonally cut serifs and round shapes cut off at top and bottom, it bore just the right feel for the project. DBXL digitized the alphabet, adding all characters needed for a full set. During this process all shapes were widened, tweaked and streamlined to enhance consistency and rhythm along the whole font. Kiperman is a text typeface designed in honor of Henrique Leão Kiperman, founder of the publishing house Artmed, now Grupo A. Its forms are simple and straightforward, with no unnecessary embellishments that could disturb the reading. The fonts are slightly narrower than normal, which yields higher efficiency without compromising reading comfort. Besides that, its italics are not just a slanted version of the romans, but rather a separate drawing. With a slope of 8°, its calligraphic structure provides the right amount of emphasis when necessary. The Kiperman typeface works best when setting books, magazines, ebooks and websites. It will also work very well in branding and packaging projects where a sober typeface is needed. The inspiration for the design came from the personality of the honoree. Just as Henrique always wanted to stay away from spotlights, the Kiperman typeface was designed so that it would not call attention to itself or impose any obstacles in the understanding of the text. In this way, the fonts revere Henrique’s legacy by respecting and honoring the published content. Henrique Leão Kiperman began his career in 1958, selling medical books in travels through the interior of the Brazilian states of Paraná and Santa Catarina. Chonky is a bold script font based on English calligraphy but with touches of the vitality that the commercial lettering of 1950s had, and it is mostly inspired in the work of the master Doyald Young and his lessons. Despeinada, which means "uncombed" in Spanish, is a loose script, perfect for when you want to convey informality. Being a packaging designer, my faces are mostly oriented toward that sector, although they won't look in any way out of place in the editorial world or in advertising, for example. This face was generated in the University of Barcelona Master of Typography, in 2010, where I dictated the “Practicum” It's a very versatile design that can be used in small sizes or enlarged as needed. Lectio is a Roman font based on a Venetian Renaissance early typefaces, but with a modern and expressive design. His obvious calligraphic influence favors continuous text reading. Gina is an unbiased humanist sans. The simple skeleton of the characters and the organic strokes are essential features to the design. Ascenders and descenders are long, making for a light texture in small text sizes. The type family includes 8 weights and 8 italics. Gothiks Round is the rounded version of Gothiks. It is a narrow 6-weight display sans-serif influenced by Texturas. The rhythm and verticality of Texturas can be easily identified on the letters with diagonal strokes like A N M K k V v W w X x Y y Z z: here they are all vertical. This kind of morphology was chosen because it accepts condensation in a very natural way, giving to this sans-serif a very unique personality. The intermediate weights can be used for short texts while extreme weights are excellent for big sizes. An experimental font designed by Viktor Kharyk in Op Art style. Eirinn was designed by Norbert Reiners for Linotype in 1994. Its forms are based on those of Irish scripts of the 7th and 8th centuries, an example of which can be found in the Book of Kells in Dublin. Characteristic of this style are for example the lower case f with its short cross stroke on the base line and long cross stroke above, the unusual form of the g, and the t, whose form is almost like that of a c. This style consisted of a mixture of lower case and capital letters at the time of its conception, but Eirinn has a full set of both lower case and capital alphabets. At first glance the viewer is reminded of ancient and indecipherable writings of the Celts before the forms of our contemporary letters and words become evident. The best way to radicalize your typographic expression is to use Blackletter! Gothic calligraphy had been used throughout all historical periods without much of the principal development the Latin typefaces underwent. However, since the invention of movable type, even now its slight variations over time can be seen. Blackletters are always used where emotions are required, be it spiritual literature, romantic novels, decadent poetry or extreme music. Dracula is a typeface dedicated to classical horror. I started to draw its letters along with my illustrations for Argo publishers in spring 2017. I needed a specific typeface for book cover and chapter titles to emphasize the mysterious atmosphere of the text. Sharp teeth and claws on a thin blackletter skeleton shall remind of the early vampirism in literature. Galix is a technical sans designed to look futuristic without any of the retro appearance often found in this genre. It has a squarish, slightly condensed anatomy, and is characterized by thin joints and deep ink traps that add a sparkle to the otherwise monoline typeface. In the italic styles, these cuts are accentuated even more which creates a feeling of speed in the letterforms. Galix is optimized for display typography (the ascender height is the same as the cap height, and the spacing is somewhat tight) but the middle weights are very readable at smaller sizes, where I'd recommend adding a little tracking. OpenType features include ft and tt ligatures, stylistic sets/alternates, automatic fractions, tabular, superscript and subscript figures, case sensitive forms. Perfect for websites, apps, infographics, magazines and logotypes, Galix is technical but with a warmth and personality that is often missing from this genre.
