Clearface Gothic first appeared in 1910, designed by Morris Fuller Benton, the world-famously prolific typeface artist. In addition to Clearface Gothic, Benton also designed classics like Franklin Gothic, Century Expanded, and many other types. Clearface Gothic is a sans serif face with light forms displaying the Zeitgeist of the turn of the 20th century. Distinguishing characteristics are the open forms of the a" and "c," the arched "k," and the upward-tilting horizontal stroke of the "e." The relatively narrow typeface, with its open inner white spaces, is extremely legible even in small point sizes. There is no accompanying italic."

The hand lettered title found on the cover of the 1932 sheet music for “Dancing Marathon” inspired the digital revival of this unusual lettering as well as the font’s name. This eccentric Art Deco design (with a slight bit of Art Nouveau mixed in) is a thin, monoline typeface. Dancing Marathon JNL is available in both regular and oblique versions. Dance marathons got their start during the Great Depression as people desperate to earn a few dollars would enter into contests that went on for hours until the last couple remained standing on the dance floor.

Xotor is a double styled typeface family destined for use in titling and headlines. The main style, the Triline weight, is a modular typeface composed of three strokes and is best used in large sizes. For smaller bodies of text, the second Regular style is based on the same letter construction but in a simple, solid stroke. Both weights can either be used individually or combined to add extra effect to any layout. With an extended Latin language support, Xotor covers most Latin based scripts and equally features a range of Opentype features, from ligatures, alternative letters or different styles of numerals.

Linotype Merlin is part of the Take Type Library, which features the winners of Linotype’s International Digital Type Design Contest from 1994 to 1997. This font was designed by Anne Boskamp and its alphabet consists exclusively of capital letters. At the same time aggressive and sensitive, Merlin looks as though it were scratched onto paper with a pen tip saturated with ink. Like characters from another time, the letters fall into place and make an impression which is both vulnerable and strong, lively and reserved. Merlin’s historical roots lie in the archaic pictograms in the caves of Stone Age civilizations.

The Neutraliser family is a versatile collection of geometric-based fonts with 24 styles. The 6 Alternate styles are suitable for headlines and are complemented by the Sans and Serif styles suitable for small amounts text. The Caps styles allow for extra typographic variation within the family. Neutraliser is a direct result of the designers' initial exploration of typography and is uncompromising in its geometric nature. As the name suggests, the typeface celebrates the precision of the digital medium as a drawing tool in which the critical points that make up a letterform can be almost 'plotted' according to a grid-based logic.

The Butterfly Ball and the Grasshopper's Feast is a 70's concept album/rock opera by Deep Purple's Roger Glover. The music video to Love Is All, featuring a lute playing frog in a cape, must be one of the best videos ever made. At least, I believe so. When working on this font, the song popped up in my head (it is still there), so I decided to name this cute, cartoonish font after the album. Butterfly Ball is a fun and happy typeface with rounded glyphs and an uneven baseline. Of course it comes with a hallucinatory range of diacritics.

Vandermark began as a simple daydream of what became the 'n' glyph. I considered the elegant balance of a terminal stroke that would never join its supporting stem. The premise was simple, but further experimentation was required for other parts of the alphabet. Vandermark follows a somewhat flexible array of structural rules and curve arrangements that called for considerable sketching to harmonize. The names I choose for my typefaces have to look decent when set in the signature type. Considering its improvisational development, it was only fitting that the namesake is a jazz musician and fellow Chicagoan, Ken Vandermark.

The standard American sanserif of the first two thirds of the twentieth century, prepared for ATF by Morris Fuller Benton in 1908 under the name News Gothic, with a matching lightface known as Lightline Gothic. Kanna Aoki was designing fabrics and dishware for several major manufacturers when she designed MVB Cafe Mimi. The design came from a few words Aoki painted as decoration for a set of cappuccino cups. Aoki created the Regular weight for MVB Fonts using a brush. The Bold was adapted after digitization. Using several double-letter ligatures, the fonts can feel as natural and spontaneous as the original hand-painted lettering. Despite its curlicues and free-flowing forms, great care was taken to keep this script balanced and legible. It skips and hops along the baseline but doesn't lose its step.

Initially inspired by an untitled typeface from an old hand-lettering book, Berber has been extensively developed over two incarnations to function as a very strong and confident sans. The 2011 Berber revisions have enabled Berber to be used across longer settings as well as its more conventional use on larger applications such as signage. Berber was used as the text face for issue 46 of Eye, the graphic design journal. The typeface now features both king caps and small caps. Extensive additions to the numerals sets and complete opentype sets of international diacritics also extend its usage.

Where Modern is too fragile and Century too boring, Hercules comes with its elegant forms and, at the same time, with sufficient firmness to be usable for longer texts. In its heavy, bold designs it approaches Falstaff, while in the light ones it has some features which are taken over from Didot or from Modern. The text designs have been corrected for small sizes. The range of its use is, therefore, quite extensive - from dictionaries and technical literature through magazines to art posters and advertising materials. Suitable combination: Splendid Quartett (especially recommended), Excelsor Script, Plagwitz, but also Zeppelin and Compur.

Binny Old Style is based on type designs originally cut in Scotland about 1863. Binny Old Style shows the influence of the types cut by William Caslon but was an attempt to make a modernized version by eliminating some of Caslon's more archaic features. It was cut by some American foundries at the end of the nineteenth century and by Lanston Monotype for mechanical composition, in 1908. Binny Old Style was named after Archibald Binny, a Scotsman who established a type foundry in Philadelphia in 1796. The Binny Old Style font is ideal for small point size settings in newspaper advertisements, catalogues etc.

The name of this blackletter font was chosen due to the centennial of the Bauer Foundry, Frankfurt am Mai, in 1937. Ernst Schneidler probably created then the most beautiful of all fraktur fonts. They are the fruit of countless calligraphic drawings and of many years of professional experiences. Zentenar Fraktur became in its time the workhorse among German blackletter fonts. To access all ligatures in both styles, it is recommended to activate Standard and Discretionary Ligatures. The round s can be reached by typing the # key, and the combination N-o-period plus the OT feature Ordinals gives you the Numero sign.

Biographer is a mild upright script drawn by Angel Koziupa, with Alejandro Paul art directing and producing. Elegant but quite reminiscent of roman forms and proportions, Biographer keeps the calligraphy mostly toned down, but its ascenders and descenders occasionally flare out in final swashy confidence. As usual with Sudtipos fonts, alternates are plenty and the personal touch is never amiss. Biographer is great for women's lit and poetry book covers, as well as tame packaging of products where conveying comfort and peace of mind is of importance. An extensive range of languages are covered (Western and Eastern European, Baltic, Turkish, Maltese and Celtic).

Pistol Twelve JNL is a novelty version of Jeff Levine's Twelve Oaks JNL wood type font, with the addition of random bullet holes in the upper case characters. The font design was suggested by fellow type designer Ray Larabie. Pistol Twelve JNL is a two-fold pun. Initially, this conveys the obvious fact that the design is a variation of Twelve Oaks JNL with bullet holes... but the name is also a play on an old, old joke. One person asks the other: "Would you care to join the Pistol Club? You drink 'til twelve and..." Well, you get the picture!

RAMS is a Sans Serif type family of four weights with matching italics. The typeface’s design was influenced by the geometric style of Sans Serif faces of the 30s. The letter shapes – based on geometric forms – have been optically corrected for better legibility, thus enabling geometric concepts to be adapted by typographic tradition. Bodoni expresses the beginning of the Industrial Revolution; its serifs are flat, think and unbracketed, while the stress is always on the mathematically vertical strokes. Bodoni believed in plenty of white space and therefore descenders are long. The M is rather narrow; in the Q the tail at first descends vertically and the R has a curled tail. The italic, like most continental modern faces, has roman serifs. Monotype Bodoni provides a clear-cut effect due to its simplicity. It reproduces well, particularly in sizes over 12pt. This font is slightly darker than Bauer Bodoni. The contrast makes Monotype Bodoni appear more condensed.

Aforo Display is a decorative font suitable for logos, headlines, packaging, signs, posters, postcards, labels, publishing, page design... The basis of the construction of the Aforo Display typeface is a slab serif font intertwined in four horizontal bars similar to the marquee letters of the old cinema/theatres. Hence its name: Aforo in Spanish is the capacity of spectators of a theater. The horizontal bars partially penetrate each character giving a sense of depth and the right and lower strokes are widened to simulate volume. It comes with four special characters to add start and end arrows, two versions for each element.

I love blueberries. When my brother and I were young, we used to pick them in the forest by the bucket. Afterwards, we’d always look like victims of a serial killer, but it was all worth it, as nothing quite tastes likes homemade blueberry jam. I don’t know why I named this cute little font Blueberry Jam. Maybe I was craving some… Blueberry Jam is a highly legible, extremely cute and very handmade font. It would look good on just anything, but book covers, product packaging and homemade jam labels come to mind. Blueberry Jam comes with a bucketload of diacritics.

Huffer is a chunky and irregular sans-serif font (with a few serifs) that simulates the look of letters crudely cut out of paper. The basic letters were originally inspired by an early 1970s instructional filmstrip dealing with the dangers of glue sniffing. Further inspiration came from other sources of 1960s display lettering. The lower case is almost as tall as the upper case allowing for a mix and match between cases to achieve a more lively display effect. Huffer Pro includes ligatures as well as Cyrillic and Central European character sets with a total of over 500 glyphs.

When Ray Larabie donated some font work files to the Stella Roberts font project, he suggested that whenever possible the design get reworked to reflect some update and change. Jeff Levine overhauled the original design and made numerous changes to end up with Seminar SRF and its oblique version. A friendly, clean sanserif with a nod to the classic Optima, this text face can easily fit into word copy or hold its own in headlines. The net profits from my font sales help defer medical expenses for my siblings, who both suffer with Cystic Fibrosis and diabetes. Thank you.

The Mramor family first appeared in the Stormtype catalogue in 1994. The first sketch arose in 1988 through the narrowing of Roman capitals. It has uniform width proportions and, above all, original lower-case letters, unprecedented with Roman Capitals. The text designs are discontinued since they were replaced by the related Amor Serif family (along with its -sans version). Now, Mramor has “only” 10 designs that each include true small caps, Cyrillics and a rich variety of figures, ligatures and alternates. Originally designed by Alois Ganslmeier as a Billboard-Font, the Coma Font was later developed into a complete typeset with capitals and small letters, Cyrillic letters, Greek letters and Hebrew letters by Andy Jörder and Jörg Herz. The Coma Font is a massive constructed font which can be used for headlines. When only typed in capitals it gives the impression of blocks for there are no ascenders or descenders. The font comes alive because of its massive appearance, its edgy form and the opulence impression when used line-by-line. Not without reason, the font is named “dick und eckig”.

Grimmig draws inspiration from solid and angular blackletter shapes and the idea of cutting letters out of paper. The interaction between curves, sharp edges, and partially unconventional serif placement makes it an excellent typeface for impactful headlines. The vivid details fade into the background in smaller sizes and provide an enjoyable reading experience for continuous text. Open counters and a large x-height contribute to Grimmig’s legibility in text sizes. It was developed as part of the MA Typeface Design in the University of Reading but had started before as a graduation project for Tamara Pilz.

ITC Grimshaw Hand is based on the handwriting of its British designer, Phill Grimshaw. Warm and lively, this typeface has the look of spontaneous handwriting with a little extra panache. Note the jaunty k, the swooping f, the simply stylish s, and the absolutely zingy cap Q and R. Grimshaw designed this face in 1995, at a time when he was also playing the guitar and mandolin. Handwriting fonts give an air of intimacy to the graphic design of advertising pieces, packaging, invitations, greeting cards - and ITC Grimshaw Hand has the touch of sweet music in its enthusiastic strokes.

Duran is a strong, versatile geometric sans with industrial quality. Inspired by technical style letterforms with simple construction, the typeface is useful in both large format and body text. Its compact lateral shape helps save space across layouts and is good to go across a wide range of modern applications. Details include seven weights with matching italics and over 670 characters per style. Opentype features consist of eight variations of numerals, including inferiors, superiors, fractions, case figures and circled figures. Linotype Cutter was designed by Georg John in 1997. As the name suggests, the font looks like it was cut out of black cardboard pieces. Each letter has a irregular rectangle black background and they combine to form heavy rows of letter elements. The strong contrasts of the font make it good for short headlines or initials in larger point sizes and combines well with almost any text font. Georg John made a second version of this theme called Linotype Schere (scissors) it is a companion typeface where the conturs of the letters are even rougher in its form.

Atomette is a bouncy sans that is friendly without being flippant, warm yet still stylish. The upper case and lower case options provide letters with less or more animation. Five weights plus an inline provide a neat mini-family to cover all your requirements. Suitable for snack packaging, comic books, toys, celebratory banners, book covers and games.
