François Boltana was a French prolific lettering artist during the late 20th Century. He created the Stilla typeface in 1973. Stilla is a cursive “Fat Face”-style design, reminiscent of the first large advertising and display types produced in the wake of the successful Bodoni, Didot, and Walbaum text faces. Because of this pedigree, Stilla is the perfect headline choice for applications that look back to the 19th century. Stilla could also be used for very short headlines or big logos.

Darker Marker is just what the name suggests: I found a very big fat marker in a local stationary store, bought it, came home and went to work on this font. Darker Marker is a very clear, very easy to read marker font. It is all caps, but upper and lower case differ and can be interchanged. Darth Vader would have said: “come to the dark side” and I believe you should. Darker Marker comes preloaded with all the diacritics you need.

REALLY fat faces seem to be popular these days, so here's my take on one. The strokes have been expanded to the brink of illegibility, but the letters remain distinguishable, especially in context. Also included are alternate versions of the letter A—suitable for use as first and last letters in a word— in the ASII circumflex and ASCII tilde positions. This font contains the complete Latin language character set (Unicode 1252) plus support for Central European (Unicode 1250) languages as well.

The basic idea for this headline typeface is to create strictly geometric letters, similar to script typeface, as far as possible in a single sweep, without setting them down. And similar to a typeface written with a quill, there is a thin and a thicker stroke. The upercase letters can also be used with the lowercase keys. The varied and unusual variety of forms in this typeface gives headlines, keywords and even short texts the attention they are looking for.

Zanzabar is an exotic display font with a distinctive Middle Eastern flair. Its characters loosely mimic the Arabic script with lowercase letters being much smaller than uppercase. Special emphasis was given to the wispy, brush-like appearance of its characters for a suggestion of authenticity. This works best from far away or at small sizes. Although decorative by nature, the entire character set is relatively easy to read. Use Zanzabar for a restaurant logo, children’s book, or a movie poster.

Humboldt is an ultra fat headline face. How bold can you go? Humboldt is an experiment to push the boundaries of character recognition: Its forms are extremely bloated yet highly distinctive. Open type savvy features provide an unexpected embellishment: small capitals, both lower case and upper case figures and several alternate glyphs are intrinsic in the design. Humboldt makes nice headlines and striking poster typography or logotypes. It can to some extent be used for setting even short phrases of text.

On the very northern edge of South Tucson lies an Old Pueblo institution, Le Caves Bakery, Home of the Vegetable Donut. That’s what they were called when Le Caves opened; now you’d say Vegan Donut, or No Animal Products Used. Radical concept in the Brave New World of 1935. I started with the letters from their sign and extrapolated the rest of the font from those. Deco Donut Fat is extrapolated from Deco Donut. If you want a donut, type a 0 (zero).

In Holland we eat pancakes with black syrup and I always thought that this ‘suikerstroop’ was the same as molasses. Turns out that’s not the case; syrup is made from sugar, but molasses is a by-product of the sugar refining industry. To celebrate the fact that I learned something new, I named this font family Black Molasses. Black Molasses was made using various cheap brushes and Chinese Ink. It comes in a ‘fat’ version and a ‘light’ version that work together really well.

SoftMaker’s Chandler Pro is a flamboyant brush script face. Originally designed with a certain far-Eastern touch in mind, it is great for casual typopgraphy. Collateral Damage is a classic splatter font from the earlier days of the internet. Love songs are the perennials of music, outlasting all other popular fads and styles that come and go. The 1920s through the 1940s is considered by some to be the Golden Age of the American love song. Nipon has an affiliation with the Far East. The first character I designed for this alphabet was the capital P. The stepped thin lines are linking to the Japanese characters and the circle shape is a classic Japanese element which means literally: the origin of the Sun, Nippon. So this is where the name comes from, I skipped one P in the name, so my Nipon gets his own identity. Next to this oriental look it also carries a light resemblance with a juwel box. Precious and elegant shapes for the gentle touch in writing.
